The control module on-board diagnostics has detected an internal fault.

Control module

When the control module is supplied with current, the processor in it is tripped. The processor then reads the instructions stored in the control module's memory.

The control module is programmed to read the inputs and activate the outputs. If the control module program is faulty, the diagnostic trouble code "Internal Control Module Fault" will be generated.

The control module must be supplied with current before the system will function. The control module is supplied with current and the processor tripped when the control module can be contacted by the diagnostics instrument.

Outputs

The purpose of the system is to control a number of functions by means of various actuators, such as an injector or lamp. For the system to be capable of performing its functions, it must be possible to activate the actuators. For this reason the actuators must be connected to the control module and have a proper power supply or ground connection.

Inputs

A condition for the control module's capability of controlling its actuators is that the system's sensors supply it with correct values.

Sensor performance can be checked with the diagnostics instrument.

Scheme 47: Before Changing A Control Module

It is our experience that the majority of control modules returned to us for repair or replacement under warranty are in perfect working order. In these cases, fitting a new control module has obviously not cured the fault. Therefore, go through all the following points carefully before changing the control module

  1. Check the latest edition of TIS2000 to see whether the problem can be solved with a control module software update (for control modules that can be reprogrammed). IMPORTANT: Avoid SPS programming unless it is absolutely necessary. It is extremely important to follow the instructions for SPS programming to avoid damaging the control module.
  2. Check all grounding points and the power supply to the control module.
  3. Check with a diagnostic tool that all the readings are plausible (several readings can affect one function).
  4. Check with the diagnostics tool that all activations function normally. (Malfunction in one output circuit can affect another output circuit).
  5. If the fault persists, the control module must be changed. Fill in the "Checklist for changing turbocharger and engine control module" before changing the control module and attach it when the control module is returned.
  6. Control modules are sensitive to electrostatic discharges. Great care must be taken to follow the following procedure to avoid damaging internal components in the control module: Keep the control module in its packaging for as long as possible. Never touch the pins of a control module with your hands or clothing. Ground yourself by touching part of the car's body/engine. Unplug the connector from the car's control module. Place the exchanged control module in its return packaging without touching the pins. Ground yourself by touching part of the car's body/engine. Plug in the connector to the car's control module.

A suitable instrument to use is a multimeter.

The ohmmeter must not be used to test components containing semi-conductors, e.g. control modules and relay with timing functions, etc.

When measuring resistance, the power supply to the system being tested must be disconnected as the measuring instrument generates a weak current in the circuit in question.

This is done to ensure that there is no current already in the tested circuit and that the correct reading is obtained.

  1. Turn on the load.
  2. Set the multimeter for measuring voltage and connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to a good grounding point.
  3. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the point where the voltage is to be read.
  4. On the output side of switches/control modules, it is better to start checking from these and gradually work your way towards the load. When there is no longer a voltage reading, you will have gone past the break point.
  5. On the input side of switches/control modules/consumers, it is better to start at the power source (normally a fuse) and then move gradually towards the switch/control module/consumer. When there is no longer a voltage reading, you will have gone past the break point.

  1. Make sure the component or lead to be tested is not under tension (e.g. by removing the relevant fuse).
  2. Set the multimeter for measuring ohms and connect the ohmmeter to each end of the component/lead to be tested.
  3. Jiggle the relevant wiring harness while observing the ohmmeter. Normally, the resistance of a wiring harness is less than 1 ohm. Specified values apply to components.

  1. Make sure the lead being tested is not under tension (e.g. remove the relevant fuse) and that any loads are disconnected.
  2. Set the multimeter for measuring ohms.
  3. Connect one test lead to a good ground and the other to the point to be tested.
  4. Carefully jiggle the wiring harness and make sure the multimeter reading shows infinite resistance (OL) all the time.

  1. When unplugging a connector that has a catch, the catch must be undone first before parting the connector. Make sure the connector catch engages properly when plugging in the connector. Examples of some of the different types of connector in the car: 1.A. Pull out the sheath to undo the connector catch. After plugging the connector in, press in the sheath to lock the connector. NOTE: Use a small screwdriver to help undo the catch on the connector. 1.B. Press in the catch to release the connector. Make sure the connector is securely locked when plugged back in. 1.C. Pull out the sheath to undo the connector catch. After plugging the connector in, press in the sheath to lock the connector. 1.D. Press in the catch on the wire clamp and tip the wire forward. Plug in the connector and lock it by raising the wire clamp. NOTE: Make sure the wire clamp is locked in the correct position, to ensure good contact in the connector. 1.E. Raise the catch to release the connector. Make sure the connector is securely locked when plugged back in. 1.F. Press in the catch on the connector to release the wire clamp. Release the connector sheath and fold forward the wire clamp. NOTE: Using greater force than necessary attempting to fold the wire clamp forward before the sheath has been released can damage the connector. Plug in the connector and lock it by raising the wire clamp.
  2. Ground yourself, by touching the car's body or engine, when unplugging or plugging in the connectors on the car's control modules.
  3. Never unplug a connector by pulling the wiring.
  4. Never touch the pins on a control module with your hands or clothes. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  5. When taking measurements, use only probes designed for this purpose to avoid damaging the contacts. Use a test cable (part. no. 86 12 731) of the correct size.
  6. For repairs to connectors, the correct special tools and spare parts must be used.
  7. The following connectors may not be repaired: Screened cables/coaxial cable (e.g. ABS sensor cable) Airbag system and pyrotechnic belt pretensioner system High-tension cables (e.g. ignition system, xenon headlamps).

  1. Check that there are no problems with contact on connection.
  2. Check contacts, connectors and crimps for oxidation, withdrawn pins and pin clamping force. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  3. To check the clamping force, use a test cable with the correct size pins (from set 86 12 731). NOTE: A test cable with too large pins will damage the sleeves in the connector. Insert the test cable pin into the connector to check the pin clamping force. Poor clamping force can cause intermittent contact. Check also that the pin is aligned with the other pins in the connector. A pin that is recessed (pushed out) can cause intermittent breaks.
  4. Check the wiring and connections for breaks.
  5. Check the wiring harness, connectors and ground connections.

  1. Note the test conditions and use common sense when assessing the test result.
  2. The specified readings are with the ignition in position ON unless otherwise stated.
  3. First check that the control module has a power supply and is grounded.
  4. Then check all sensor inputs and signals from other systems.
  5. Finally, check the control module outputs. Remember that the readings do not determine whether the actuator is working.
  6. If any reading is not OK, consult the wiring diagram to trace the leads, connectors or components which should be checked more thoroughly.
  7. The specified test readings refer to those obtained with a calibrated Fluke 88/97.
  8. Test readings in % (+) and ms (+) show the pulse ratio and pulse duration of the signal. A test instrument capable of giving pulse ratio and pulse duration readings must be used. The (+) sign indicates a positive trigger pulse, TRIG+.

General

DICE is a comprehensive control system for the electronic functions in the car. The central unit in DICE is a control module which communicates with the system units and with other systems via the car's wiring and the instrument bus (I-bus). DICE has its own diagnostics function and diagnostic trouble codes are set when faults arise.

The following functions are controlled by DICE

  2. Interior lighting
  3. Rheostat control
  4. Acoustic warning
  5. Intermittent wiper, windscreen
  6. Wiper, headlamp
  7. Electrically heated rear window and door mirrors
  8. Radiator fan
  9. Air conditioning

Exterior lighting

The car's exterior lighting is operated with the main light switch and the left-hand toggle switch combined with the DICE control module.

The following light functions in the car's exterior lighting system are controlled by DICE

  1. Main lighting
  2. Front fog lights
  3. Rear fog lights
  4. Direction indicators
  5. Hazard flashers

Interior lighting system

General interior lighting (dome lamps) in the car. Automatic or manual function depending on the position of the light switch.

The following light functions in the interior lighting system are controlled by DICE

  1. Cabin lighting
  2. Map Light
  3. Vanity mirror lighting
  4. Glove box light
  5. Floor light
  6. Courtesy lights
  7. Luggage compartment lighting

Lighting for buttons and controls

DICE supplies power to the button and control lighting. The light intensity is controlled by DICE using pulse width modulation (PWM) of the supply voltage to the lamps.

If Night Panel on the SID has been selected, the button and control lamps will be dimmed.

Acoustic warning

Acoustic warning if the driver's door is opened while the key is still in the ignition.

Acoustic warning if the parking lights are on and the driver's door is opened while the key is not in the ignition.

The function is programmable.

Windscreen wiper, interval

When using the intermittent function on the windscreen wipers, the time between the strokes can be varied from 2 to 15 seconds and is adjusted using a potentiometer located on the control lever of the wiper switch.

DICE controls the windscreen wiper function even when the washer is used. When the washer is used very briefly, the wiper will do three strokes. As the requested washer time increases, the number of wiper strokes will increase up to a maximum of five strokes.

The "extra wiper stroke" function after "washing" is programmable.

Headlamp wiper

DICE activates the headlamp wiper relay for 1 second when washing the windscreen.

Electrically heated rear window and door mirrors

Electric heating of the rear window and exterior rear-view mirrors. These functions are activated manually or automatically via the car's ACC function, alternatively manually when the car has MCC.

Radiator fan

DICE switches the radiator fan on and off. The car is equipped with 1 or 2 fans depending on the market.

On cars without A/C, one fan. DICE switches the radiator fan on/off.

On cars with A/C, 2 fans. DICE controls whether one or two fans will be used.

DICE uses the following information to control the function

  1. Coolant temperature
  2. A/C pressure
  3. Outside temperature
  4. Vehicle speed

Air conditioning

Control of the A/C function. DICE uses the following values to determine whether the A/C compressor should be allowed to operate

  1. Coolant temperature
  2. A/C system working pressure
  3. Evaporation temperature
  4. Outside temperature
  5. Vehicle speed
  6. Time that the engine has been running

If DICE gives approval for the A/C compressor to operate, DICE sends a bus message that is used by the engine control system to activate the compressor clutch relay.

Scheme 86: P-bus and I-bus

All control modules in the Saab 9-5 are connected to the bus with the exception of ABS and SRS. For cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS control module is connected to the bus.

The bus allows large quantities of data to be sent between the control modules on only two cables. The bus is divided into a Power train bus (P-bus) and an Instrument bus (I-bus).

Trionic, TCM and TC/ABS power train systems require fast data communication so that no noticeable delay occurs, e.g. for torque limitation when changing gears.

Trionic, TCM and TC/ABS are connected to the P-bus, on which data transfer is ten times faster than on the I-bus.

The P-bus and I-bus are connected to the MIU. The MIU is responsible for making information on one bus available to the other bus.

The diagnostic instrument is not connected directly to the bus but communicates via the DICE, one of the control modules connected to the I-bus, and so has access to all control modules connected to the bus.

Vehicle speed data is important for many control modules. Since the ABS is not connected to the bus, the vehicle speed signal is sent on a separate lead from the ABS to the MIU. The MIU then sends the data over the busses. In cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS sends vehicle speed data to the MIU via the P-bus.

The DICE control module is located above the main relay board (LHD) and adjacent to the main relay board (RHD). It is connected to the system components with a 70 pin connector.

As the central unit in the DICE system, the control module checks and controls the system components and functions as follows

  1. DICE - controls the power supply to the various system functions. Power is supplied directly via the control module and via external relays that are grounded through the control module.

Scheme 98: P-bus and I-bus

A bus is understood to be the leads over which information is sent digitally and serially. Digital means that the voltage difference between the leads has only two values, roughly 0 V and 5 V. The information is coded so that different combinations of 0 V and 5 V pulses have different meanings.

Serial means that the information is sent in "packets" which are transmitted one after the other in rapid succession.

All control modules in the Saab 9-5 are connected to a bus with the exception of ABS and SRS. For cars with Traction Control, the TC/ABS control module is connected to the P-bus.

The bus consists of a P-bus (Powertrain Bus) and an I-bus (Instrument Bus). Both buses are connected to the MIU (Main Instrument Unit). The buses are electrically isolated from each other.

The diagnostic tool is not connected directly to the bus but communicates via the DICE, one of the control modules connected to the I-bus, and so has access to all control modules connected to the bus.

The data transfer rate of the P-bus is ten times faster than that of the I-bus. The reason for this is that the powertrain systems need information with the least possible delay, as for example when providing air mass compensation when the selector lever is moved from N to D or torque limitation in connection with gear changing.

All the information sent from one control module is accessible for all other control modules on the bus. The MIU is responsible for ensuring that information available on one bus is also available on the other bus.

The control modules send out information on the bus at regular intervals. The time between two transmissions depends on the information being sent and varies between 10 milliseconds (0.010 seconds) and 1 second. Information is also sent out by the control modules whenever the information changes.

Information is transferred between control modules over two leads, bus+ (green cable) and bus- (white cable). Both leads of the bus are twisted to reduce susceptibility to electrical interference.
