- Remove the battery cover, battery and battery tray.
- Remove the gear selector arm from the transmission. The selector lever must be in position 1.
- Remove the clamp at the cable bracket.
- Remove the cable ferrule from the bracket on the transmission.
- Remove the centre console, see «INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(ref-212275) .
- Remove the circlip and the anti-rattle clip.
- Drive out the pin while removing the end of the cable from the ball.
- Remove the screws securing the selector lever housing.
- Unplug the selector lever housing's connector.
- Lift up the selector lever housing and unplug the electrical connection from the ignition switch. Remove the air duct.
- Remove the clamp located beside the locking catches.
- Carefully press the catches securing the cable ferrule towards each other and remove the cable from the bracket.
- Lift out the selector lever housing.
- Pull the cable and rubber grommet into the car. NOTE: Protect the rear seat upholstery. The cable may contact the rear seat when it is pulled out.

- Fold aside the centre console's carpet beside the accelerator so that the cable's rubber grommet can be pressed into place.
- Push the cable through the acoustic insulation from inside the cabin.
- Lubricate the rubber grommet with vaseline and guide the cable to its correct position in the car.
- Press the rubber grommet into the hole in the body metal. NOTE: Check the position of the cable at the selector lever housing, the elevation on the cable ferrule should point up.
- Connect the selector lever to the transmission and fit the clamp.
- Fit the selector lever housing in place.
- Connect the cable to the selector lever housing and fit the clamp.
- Plug in the electrical connections to the ignition switch while putting the selector lever housing in place.
- Connect the air duct and tighten the selector lever housing.
- Tap in the pin at the same time as the ball enters the end of the cable.
- Fit the circlip and the anti-rattle clip.
- Fit the centre console, see «INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(ref-212275) .
- Fold back the carpet at the accelerator.
- Adjust the position of the cable, see «CHECKING AND ADJUSTMENT, SELECTOR LEVER CABLE»(ref-212244-S42298248402005122300000) .
- Refit the battery tray, battery and battery cover.
- Set the right time on the clock.

- Check that the play in the selector lever is the same in position N as in position D. If it is not, adjust the cable as follows.
- Move the selector lever to position P (inside the car).
- Lift up the cable adjustment catch.
- Move the selector lever on the gearbox to the P position.
- Roll the car until the P interlock engages.
- Press the selector lever rearwards and press down the adjustment catch so that it locks the cable ferrule. NOTE: There is a play in the P-position (inside the car). The selector lever should be held rearward when the catch is pressed down.
- Check that the play is the same in positions N and D.

- Remove the circlip and the anti-rattle clip.
- Drive out the pin while removing the end of the cable from the ball.
- Remove the screws securing the selector lever housing.
- Unplug the selector lever housing's connector.
- Lift up the selector lever housing, undo the cable ties securing the wiring harness to the ignition switch and airbag, and unplug the electrical connection to the ignition switch.
- Remove the clamp located beside the locking catches.
- Carefully press the catches securing the cable ferrule towards each other and remove the cable from the bracket.
- Lift out the selector lever housing.

- Fit the selector lever housing in place.
- Connect the cable to the selector lever housing and fit the clamp.
- Plug in the electrical connection to the ignition switch while putting the selector lever housing in place.
- Refit the 2 cable ties for the wiring harness.
- Push in the pin at the same time as the ball enters the end of the cable. Grip the end of the cable.
- Fit the circlip and the anti-rattle clip.
- Connect the air duct and tighten the selector lever housing.
- Fit the centre and floor console, see «INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(ref-212275) .
- Adjust the position of the cable.

- Remove the selector lever housing. IMPORTANT: When working on a dismantled selector lever housing, the selector lever should be protected with foam rubber or the like.
- Remove the Gear selector casing.
- Snip the cable tie holding the lead for the lighting button in place.
- Snip the cable tie securing the lead for the electromagnet.
- Remove the pins on the electromagnet cable from the connector, pins 5 and 6. Use 85 80 110 Pin removal tool
- Remove the shift indication display. Remove the screws securing the ignition switch.
- Drill out the rivets.
- Dismantle the selector lever housing.
- Remove the selector lever retaining bolt.
- Remove the selector lever with holder from the base plate.
- Remove the lock washer and tap out the spacer sleeve.
- Detach the selector lever from the holder.

- Fit the selector in the holder.
- Insert the spacer sleeve through the selector lever, ignition switch retaining catch, shift-lock retaining catch and holder. Fit a new lock washer.
- Fit the selector lever with holder into the groove at the front of the base plate.
- Fit the bolt and tighten it.
- Fit the selector lever and ignition switch in the selector lever housing. Place the sport button's lead in the clip.
- Note, the selector lever housing does need to be riveted together.
- Screw the ignition switch in place.
- Fit a cable tie to hold the lead for the lighting in place.
- Plug in the electromagnet's connector.
- Insert a cable tie through the hole in the selector lever and round the electromagnet's and WINTER button's leads.
- Fit the gear selector casing, see «FITTING»(ref-212244-S16297570242005122300000) .
- Fit the selector lever housing, see «FITTING»(ref-212244-S16297570242005122300000) .

- Move the selector lever to position N or D.
- Remove the screw securing the front part of the selector lever casing.
- Remove the front part.
- Press up the SPORT button from below.
- Unsolder the SPORT button. Place some form of protection under it so that drops of solder do not fall onto the centre console.
- Remove the clip and pull up the detent button together with the rear part of the selector lever casing. The electric leads remain in the lever casing.

- Position the electric leads in the lower part of the lever casing and mount them on the lever. Use grease, part No.82 93 243, to lubricate the entire U-channel in which the detent button runs. Spread the grease evenly on all three inner sides of the channel so that the detent button will run easily along it. IMPORTANT: Having regard to the temperature tolerance, use only grease having the specified part number.
- Fit the detent button and press it down together with the lever casing until the screw hole is opposite the hole in the selector lever.
- Insert the leads through the hole and solder them to the SPORT button. Place some form of protection under it so that drops of solder do not fall onto the centre console.
- Press the SPORT button into place.
- Run the leads in a loop so that they will not be nipped and press them into the groove behind the detent button.
- Fit the detent button's clip.
- Fit the front part of the selector lever casing.
- Screw the selector lever together.

- Remove the front part of the selector lever casing.
- Press up the SPORT button from below.
- Unsolder the SPORT button. Place some form of protection under it so that drops of solder do not fall onto the centre console.

- Press the SPORT button into place.
- Run the leads in a loop so that they will not be nipped.

- Snip the cable tie.
- Press the WINTER-button out of the indication display.
- Move the protective casing from the soldering joint on the middle lead and unsolder to remove the leads. NOTE: Protect the indication display when soldering.

- Fasten the leads by soldering and enter the protective casing over the soldered joint.
- Press the WINTER-button onto the indication display.
- Fit a new cable tie through the hole in the selector lever housing and round the leads.

- Remove the selector lever housing, see . IMPORTANT: The selector lever housing must be protected with foam rubber or similar when being worked on when dismantled.
- Snip the cable ties.
- Extract the pins for the electromagnet from the connector, pins 5, 6 and 2. Use removal tool 85 80 151. NOTE: Note the position of the 3 pins in the connector.
- Drill out the rivets that join the upper and lower part of the selector housing with a three millimetre drill bit.
- Separate the upper and lower parts of the selector lever housing and remove the screws by the electromagnet.
- Remove the lever from the top of the electromagnet and remove the electromagnet.

- Fit the electromagnet to the lever.
- Fit the electromagnet's two screws.
- Fit the two parts of the selector lever housing together.
- The selector lever housing does need to be riveted together.

- Withdraw the cable from the holder.

- Fit the expanding pin securing the cable ferrule.
- Fit the clip in the locking pin.
- Fit the selector in the holder.

- Fit the selector lever with holder into the groove at the front of the base plate.
- Fit the bolt and tighten it.
- Fit the selector lever and ignition switch in the selector lever housing. Place the sport button's lead in the clip.
- Rivet the parts of the selector lever housing together.
- Screw the ignition switch in place. Fit the shift indication display.
- Fit a cable tie to hold the lead for the lighting in place.
- Plug in the electromagnet's connector.
- Insert a cable tie through the hole in the selector lever and round the electromagnet's and WINTER button's leads.

- Assemble the selector lever casing, see «SELECTOR LEVER CASING»(ref-212244-S38140141342005122300000) .

- Remove the transponder by turning it as shown in the illustration.
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Bend a welding rod to shape.
- Remove the lock cylinder by pressing in the catch with the welding rod and withdrawing the cylinder straight up.

- Fit the lock cylinder in place and press it well home. Make sure it is firmly located.
- Fit the transponder.

- Unplug the 6-pin connector and remove it from the bracket and detach the electric cables 4, 5 and 6.
- Detach electric cable no. 2 from the 2-pin connector.

- Fit a new cable tie on the gear shift housing. Tighten the cable tie around the cables that go to the gear indicator. Fit the spring. Hook on the light box on the rear edge and then on the front edge.
- Attach the electric cables. Fit and connect the 6-pin and 2-pin connectors.
- Secure with cable ties.
- Fit the Centre console and rim.
- Check the function of the gear indicator lamp as well as the Winter and Sport button indicator lamps in the instrument.
