General
This information is our recommendation for pre-delivery and maintenance services.
These recommendations are based on design constraints, the requirements of the authorities and practical usage. The mileage intervals for inspecting and replacing consumable items are based on this. However, due to the time/mileage relationship, some operating conditions will make annual service more suitable.
Contents
The information contains procedures for the acceptance inspection of a new vehicle and in-storage care. This is followed by programs for pre-delivery and maintenance services in bullet lists, with operations listed in the correct order. The service programs contain links to descriptions of each service item.
| IMPORTANT | These methods are to apply when assessing if service has been correctly performed. |
Acceptance and storage of a new car
On acceptance of a new car, its specification must be checked. The car must also be inspected for damage. Defects and departures from the specifications must be reported in accordance with special procedures. Afterwards, the car must be inspected during the time it is parked in storage to be sure that it is properly cared for while awaiting its new owner.
Customers base their opinions of Saab and you as a dealer on the condition of the car when it is collected. So pay attention to even the smallest details, such as making sure that there are no oil stains or smudges of dirt anywhere on the car, that the clock shows the right time, and so on.
All inspection, checking and adjustment points must be carried out conscientiously. Apart from this, unforeseeable defects may have been caused during transport and storage. These are to be regarded as repairs.
Every driver is given individual "TIME FOR SERVICE" information directly on the car's service indicator, SID. Servicing consists of measure that must be carried out to maintain the car's high standard of safety and prevent faults from arising. These service measure are also designed to ensure that the car will conform to exhaust emission control regulations, maintain a high standard of roadworthiness and be economical in use.
For optimum maintenance of the car, operating conditions should be taken into consideration when choosing an appropriate grade of oil for the engine.
| IMPORTANT | More frequent oil changes may be necessary if the car is driven under one or several of the following conditions: frequent idling repeated starting and stopping, including frequent and predominant city driving short distances in cold climate without enough time for the engine to warm up If the car is driven under the above specified conditions, we recommend oil change every 10 000 km. |
Low mileage
The SID will display "Time For Service" after 12 months if the mileage for the service interval is not reached before this. In this case, use the annual service programs.
| IMPORTANT | In all service work it is necessary to consult the service schedule to be sure of carrying out the right service measures for the odometer reading in question. Then carry out the work described in the method description. |
| IMPORTANT | The inspection of certain points and the replacement of consumable items that are subject to legal requirements should be carried out at the specified mileage only, unless they are defective beforehand. |
Saab Original Service comprises a number of different programs. The choice of program depends upon which type of engine the vehicle has and the conditions in each particular market. See also the requirements of the importer.
| Engine | Service program | Comments |
|---|---|---|
| 4-cyl, petrol | EU, WW, US/CA | Depending on the market |
| 4-cyl, diesel | EU, WW | Depending on the market |
SERVICE PROGRAM
If the annual vehicle mileage is low the service intervals should be determined on a time basis.
The service program has an interval of maximum 1 year. For diesel engines the maximum is 2 years.
Car's Electrical System in Transport Mode/Customer Mode
Because the car's electrical system consumes power, there are two different versions - transport mode and customer mode.
Transport mode
Minimizes the car's current consumption during transport from the factory to the customer. In this mode, many customer-oriented functions, such as central locking, interior lighting and audio/navigation system, are not available. As an exception, the car can be taken out of this mode during handling up until pre-delivery service is performed on cars displayed in showrooms, for example. If the car is put in customer mode, the condition of the battery must be checked more often.
Activating transport mode
- Connect Tech 2 and select Body/TWICE/Adjustments/Transport mode "ON"
- Remove the transit fuse from pos 1 of fuse box 501.
Customer mode
All functions (as per car specification) are now available for the customer.
Activating customer mode
- Fit the transit fuse in pos 1 of fuse box 501.
- Connect Tech 2 and select Body/TWICE/Adjustments/Transport mode "OFF"
Additional measures if the car is to be stored outdoors
- Check the level of coolant and the antifreeze. The coolant should be able to withstand at least -30°C (- 22°F). It will then also provide maximum corrosion protection. In certain climates, it is necessary for the coolant to withstand even lower temperatures. If necessary, top up with a 1:1 mixture of Saab Original Antifreeze and water.
- If the car's RAPGARD paint protector has been removed, the car must be stored in covered premises.
- Drive the car to the storage car park, applying the brakes briefly and repeatedly so that the brake discs will be clean and dry.
- Open the bonnet.
- Check the protective plastic on the seats and adjust if necessary.
- Make sure that: The handbrake is released and in the off position. Reverse gear is engaged (manual gearbox). The selector lever is in position P (automatic transmission). All windows, doors and boot lid are properly closed.
- Lock the car.
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery or remove the battery for charging. Close the bonnet.
Damage reporting
*) If Saab Automobile AB transit damage insurance is to be used, a transit damage report must be completed.

In-storage Car Care
In-storage car care is mandatory for all cars at intervals of no more than 60 days until the car is sold.
An interval of no more than 30 days applies to battery checks. Check the battery card to see when the battery was last checked. Perform the measures specified under Battery check BATTERY CHECK - 2006 or BATTERY CHECK - 2007 .
If the car is locked and its electrical system is in transport mode, only the left front door can be unlocked by using the metal key.
Perform checks and confirm by signing the In-storage care form In Storage Car-Care, Form .
Refer to service information and procedures when rectifying faults.

Scheme 52
- Check that the paint protection plastic is intact. If the paint protector has been damaged, remove it to check for damage to the car. Then store the car, preferably under a roof. IMPORTANT: The plastic paint protector may remain on the car for a maximum of 3 months and must then be removed. For removal, see the chapter "Final removal and finishing procedures".
- Unlock the car. NOTE: If the car's electrical system is in transport mode, the car can only be unlocked manually. The left front door is unlocked using the metal key.
- Perform a battery check see «BATTERY CHECK - 2006»(ref-274818-S07437740962007122400000) or «BATTERY CHECK - 2007»(ref-278617-S15386120312008013000000) . IMPORTANT: If possible, the battery should be checked before the car is started in order to prevent misleading results due to "top charging". If the car has already been started, wait 20 minutes before connecting the battery analyzer.
- Fill with fuel to min. 2/3 tank to prevent the fuel pump from running dry.
- Check the engine oil. If the oil is thick or contains lumps, both the oil and oil filter must be changed.
- Check the tire pressures and if necessary adjust to 3.5 bar (50 psi). IMPORTANT: If the car is parked for lengthier periods with underinflated tires, a flat area will be formed on them where they rest on the ground. This gives rise to vibration and makes wheel balancing more difficult.
- Check the level of the coolant.
- Drive the car and apply the brakes briefly and repeatedly so that the brake discs become clean and dry.
- Park the car facing in the opposite direction to equalize the effect of sunlight on it.
- Open the bonnet to cool the engine down more rapidly.
- Check the protective plastic on the seats and adjust if necessary.
- Make sure that: The handbrake lever is released to the standby position. Manual gearbox: Reverse gear is engaged. Automatic transmission: The gear selector is in P. All windows, doors and the boot lid/tailgate are fully closed.
- Lock the car.
- Check the engine bay for the start of corrosion, particularly aluminum components. Treat as necessary with Protective wax. Apply a coat of wax film with no excess. WARNING: Bear in mind the fire risk. Make particularly sure that the temperature in the engine bay has gone down. Do not spray onto the ends of the generator. IMPORTANT: The protective wax may well be left on as engine bay protection when the car is delivered to a customer. If the customer will not accept the waxed surface, it must of course be washed off.
- Close the bonnet.
In Storage Car-Care, Form
This form is to be used for in-storage care of the car with the specified VIN.
Fill in the form and keep it in the car until the car is made ready for delivery.

Recommended Oil Quality
All cars leaving the factory are filled with synthetic engine oil. These products contain components of very high quality in order to meet the demands of our engines.
Background
Synthetic oil has been chosen to meet demands on service life and improved fuel economy in order to reduce the impact on the environment. The use of recommended oils will avoid the tendency to build up internal deposits in the engine, which can block the lubricating system and damage components in the engine.
Engine performance
Lubrication and viscosity are of the utmost importance when it comes to obtaining the best possible performance from our engines. It is therefore important that the oil recommendations are followed. The beneficial low-temperature flow properties of the oil enable it to quickly reach remote parts of the lubrication system, thereby reducing engine wear. In the same manner, oil viscosity at high temperatures has been adapted to also provide the best function when used in extremely hot markets.
Fuel economy
Selecting oil with low viscosity has a positive impact on fuel economy. Problems with wear may arise, however, if the oil film becomes too thin due to low viscosity. The recommended oils maintain the right viscosity at various temperatures. The synthetic oil also generates lower fuel consumption during the warm-up period after start.
Useful life
It is important that the oil's properties are maintained to their fullest during the entire change interval. Some oils' additives are consumed too quickly, resulting in internal, engine-damaging deposits and increased wear. The recommended oils meet today's high demands for durability provided that the service program is followed.
An often neglected aspect is that more frequent oil changes are necessary if the car is driven often in urban traffic with frequent starts and short driving distances. This is because more fuel and condensation blends into the engine oil in such circumstances.
Environmental aspect
Low fuel consumption means fewer emissions, principally of carbon dioxide (CO2).
It is important to follow the oil change intervals specified by the service program to guarantee the service life of all engine components and to keep engine performance optimized. Both distance driven and time between servicing are of the utmost importance. Servicing must be carried out when any of the criteria such as service messages, distance driven or time have been fulfilled.
Recommendation
Use oils as specified on the following tables as these oils fulfil the requirements specified above.
| Engine type | Engine designation | Oil grade and viscosity |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol engine and E85 engine | B204E, B204L, B204R, B234E, B234L, B234R, B205E, B205L, B205R, B235E, B235L, B235R, B207E, B207L, B207R, B308E, B281E, B284E, B284L B204i, B234i, B258i, B308i, Z18XE | Long Life engine oil 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 5W-40 that fulfils the quality requirement GM-LL-A-025. |
| Diesel engine 4-cyl. | D223L, Z19DT, Z19DTH, D308L | Long Life engine oil 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 5W-40 that fulfils the quality requirement GM-LL-B-025. |
| Diesel engine 4-cyl. | Z19DTR | Long Life engine oil 0W-40 that meets quality requirement GM-LL-B-025. |
OIL GRADE AND VISCOSITY
We strongly discourage the use of additional engine oil additives.
The risks of using oil that does not fulfil the specifications above are great. If an oil of too low a grade is used, there is a risk or wear due to poor lubrication or coatings in the engine due to prematurely aged oil that cannot keep the engine clean. This could eventually lead to clogged oil ducts and engine damage.
