Power Windows System Components

The power window system consists of the following components

  1. Driver window switch
  2. Passenger window switch
  3. Left rear window switch
  4. Right rear window switch
  5. Window motors in each of the doors
  6. F49RA 30 A fuse
  7. F46RA 30 A fuse
  8. F32RA 5 A fuse
  9. Body Control Module (BCM)

Power Window System

This vehicle can be configured as driver express up and express down power window motor and passenger, left rear, right rear express down window motors.

Window lift motor driver and passenger side express up and express down

The driver door contains a window motor is smart motor that will detect excessive resistance while performing the express up function and automatically reverse direction to prevent injury to any occupants that may become trapped between the closing window and the door frame. The automatic reverse safety feature can be overridden by pulling and holding the window switch.

The logic circuit in the driver's door's window lift motor monitors the signal circuits for up, down and express movements, which normally means a B+ voltage. When a window switch is actuated on the driver's side the contacts make, causing a voltage drop in the current signal circuit. The window motor will detect the voltage drop and will command the window to move in the direction requested.

Driver's window switch communicates to the BCM by a serial data circuit. When the driver wishes to control the passenger side window, the driver will use the appropriate switch on the driver window switch. When this switch is used, a serial data message is sent to the BCM requesting a window motor command, the BCM will then send a serial data message to the appropriate door window switch which will then command that window to move in the direction requested.

Window lift motors left rear, right rear express down

For the passenger, right rear and left rear doors, when their window switch is pressed in the down position, battery positive voltage is applied to their respective window motor control circuit and ground to the other window motor control circuit causing that window to open. When the individual window switch is pulled in the up position, voltage and ground is applied to the window motor in the opposite direction causing that window to close. The return path to ground is supplied through the inactive control circuit being normally grounded through the window switch.

The rear window switch communicates to the BCM by a serial data circuit. When the driver wishes to control the left or right rear window, the driver will use the appropriate switch on the driver window switch. When this switch is used, a serial data message is sent to the BCM requesting a window motor command, the BCM will then send a serial data message to the appropriate door window switch which will then command that window to move in the direction requested.

Express down and comfort opening of all windows

Some models are equipped with express down function for all windows simultaneously. Function is controlled by BCM. When the remote control's unlock button is pressed and held down, the keyless entry control module sends a serial data message to BCM with a request to open all windows.

Lockout Switch Feature

The driver power window switch panel contains a power window lockout switch. When the driver presses the window lockout switch, a serial data message is sent to the BCM which in turn deactivates the rear window switches. The rear windows will still function normally from the switches on the driver window switch.

Rear Window Defogger System Components

The rear window defogger system consists of the following components

  1. HVAC Control Module
  2. HVAC Control Head
  3. Rear Window Defogger Relay
  4. Rear Defogger Grid
  5. F28UA 40A Fuse

Power Mirror System Components

The power mirror system consists of the following components

  1. Mirror direction switch - Controls the left, right, up and down movements of the mirrors
  2. Mirror select switch - Allows the operator to select the mirror to be moved
  3. Left outside mirror - Contains both the horizontal and vertical mirror motors
  4. Right outside mirror - Contains both the horizontal and vertical mirror motors

Each of the outside power mirrors contains 2 motors. The up-down motor operates the vertical directions and the left-right motor operates the horizontal directions. Each of the power mirror motors are internally circuit breaker protected.

Power Mirror System Controls

The outside mirror switch incorporates a mirror select switch and a 4 position mirror direction switch.

The mirror select switch allows the driver to select the mirror to be moved by pressing the switch to L position enabling the left outside mirror or pressing the switch to R position enabling the right outside mirror.

The mirror direction switch is a 4 position switch that allows the operator to move the selected mirror up, down, left or right.

Folding Mirrors (If Equipped)

The folding mirror system is controlled through an electronic switch that can be activated when the mirror select switch is in the neutral position. When the mirror select switch is in the neutral position, the fold/unfold function is activated by pressing the down arrow. The fold/unfold switch will fold or unfold the mirrors depending on their current state. When a power fold or unfold function is activated, battery voltage is supplied to the fold motor by the appropriate fold or unfold control circuit and the motor will be grounded by the opposite control circuit.

Heated Mirrors

The heated mirrors are controlled through the rear defog relay. Whenever the rear window defogger is turned on battery voltage is supplied to the mirror heater elements through the left and right mirror heater element control circuits.

The power mirror system consists of the following components

  1. Left Mirror Control Module
  2. Memory Seat Control Module
  3. Outside Mirror Switch
  4. Passenger Window Switch
  5. Left Outside Rearview Mirror
  6. Right Outside Rearview Mirror

The outside rearview mirror switch is a multiplex switch which signals the left mirror control module which outside rearview mirror to move (driver or passenger) and which direction to move it. The left mirror control module and the passenger window switch are on a serial data circuit with the memory seat module as the master. The mirror select and directional control switches are inputs to the left mirror control module. When the memory seat module receives the switch inputs from the left mirror control module, mirror output commands are sent to the appropriate module/switch through the serial data circuit. The left mirror control module and passenger window switch control the left and right outside rear view mirrors through bi-directional motor control circuits. The motor control circuits are floating while in an inactive state and the switches will apply power and ground to the control circuits as necessary to move the mirror in the commanded direction.

Mirror position is determined by both horizontal and vertical position sensors in each of the power mirrors. The left mirror control module and passenger window switch supply a 5 V reference, low reference, and horizontal and vertical position signal circuits to these sensors. The signal circuits are referenced from 5 V by the switches and the signal circuit voltage levels represent the mirror positions. The mirror positions are sent to the memory seat control module through the serial data circuit where they are stored for memory mirror operation. When the memory seat module receives a memory recall command, the memory seat control module will send the go to position commands to the left mirror control module and passenger window switch. The switches will then drive the appropriate mirror motors to the commanded position sensor settings.

Folding Mirrors

The outside rearview mirror switch sends the mirror select and mirror fold/unfold inputs to the left mirror control module which communicates the inputs to the memory seat control module through serial data. When the memory seat control module receives a fold/unfold signal it will send a fold/unfold command to the left mirror control module and the passenger window switch. The outside mirrors will fold or unfold depending on their current state. The left mirror control module and the passenger window switch control the fold/unfold motors through bi-directional control circuits.

The heated mirrors are controlled through the rear defog relay. Whenever the vehicle is running and the rear window defogger is turned on battery voltage is supplied to the mirror heater elements through the left and right mirror heater element control circuits.

Important Preliminary Checks Before Starting

  1. Perform the «DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - VEHICLE»(ref-652232-S33658475782014082300000) before using the symptom tables in order to verify that all of the following are true: There are no DTCs set. The control modules can communicate via the serial data link.
  2. Review the power window system operation or rear window defogger system operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to the following: «REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION»(ref-652259-S18772354992014082300000) «POWER WINDOWS DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION»(ref-652259-S17858168252014082300000)

Intermittent

Note. Inspect for proper installation of electrical components if an intermittent condition exists. Inspect for aftermarket theft deterrent devices, lights, and cellular phones. Check that no aftermarket equipment is connected to the class 2 circuit. If you cannot localize an intermittent problem, a cellular phone signal may be causing the problem. Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to TESTING FOR INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS AND POOR CONNECTIONS . The problem may illuminate the SERVICE VEHICLE SOON indicator or store a DTC. Do not use the symptom tables to diagnose intermittent conditions. The malfunction must be present in order to locate the problem.

Poor electrical connections or wiring cause most intermittent conditions. Perform a careful visual/physical check for the following conditions

  1. Poor mating of the connector halves or a terminal not fully seated in the connector body
  2. An improperly formed or damaged terminal
  3. Reform or replace connector terminals in the problem circuit in order to ensure proper contact tension.
  4. Poor terminal to wire connection requires removing the terminal from the connector body in order to perform the check.

Use a scan tool in order to help detect intermittent conditions. The scan tool has several features that can be used to locate an intermittent condition. The snapshot feature can capture and store data parameters within the scan tool when the malfunction occurs. This information can then be reviewed in order to see what caused the malfunction.

BACKGROUND

Customer complaints on visible ringshaped grease marks on the windscreen or other windows.

CONDITIONS

Marks are most visible when sun is standing low in front of the car.

ACTION

Explain the marks for the customer and tell him that they will disappear over time but it can take some time before they disappear totally. If this is not acceptable for the customer, continue like this

Grease marks/small scratches or stone chip marks (slightly blasted)

If you have ceric oxide as a fluant solution take a suitable amount in a smooth clean cloth and polish parts of or complete windscreen.

If you don't have this solution available you can also use the normal house hold product that is used for polishing ceramic top of the stove.

For bigger marks you may use ceramic oxide in powder form, wet the windscreen and polish it with a polishing machine.

You can also contact your local windscreen dealer for assistance if necessary.
