Scheme 1

Scheme 1: To Remove
  1. Locate the hole on the underside of the indicator stalk-switch. Poke a small screwdriver or similar tool into the hole, push the locking clip upwards while pulling the indicator stalk-switch outwards.

  1. Fit the stalk-switch by pushing it into place on the steering column.

  1. Remove the cover. Use «82 93 474 REMOVAL TOOL»(ref-275863-S07985688912007122900000).
  2. Unplug the connector. NOTE: Be careful when the catches are pushed out of the bracket so that the windscreen is not damaged.
  3. Release the clamps and remove the rain sensor by pressing the clamps out towards the windscreen.

Scheme 5: To fit
  1. Clean the windscreen in the area of the rain sensor.
  2. Fit the rain sensor by snapping the clamps into place. NOTE: Check that the clamps are correctly seated in the grooves and that the rain sensor makes good contact with the windscreen.
  3. Plug in the connector.
  4. Fit the cover by first pressing home the bottom edge and then the top edge.

Description

The car is equipped with a wash and wipe system to clean the windscreen and the headlamps. 5D: The car is equipped with a wash and wipe system to clean the tailgate window.

The system functions are controlled by a lever on the column integration module to the right of the steering wheel.

The washer and wiper system comprises

Rain sensor

The rain sensor is placed on the inside of the windscreen forward of the inside rearview mirror. The rain sensor is a control module with inbuilt logic circuits. The control unit is activated by selecting the automatic mode with the wiper stalk-switch. The rain sensor senses the presence of rain or snow on the windscreen and transmits data relating to this to the rear electrical center (REC) which relays the information to the engine underhood electrical center (UEC) which in turn activates the windscreen wipers. A light sensor measures the outside light intensity so that the sensitivity of the rain sensor can be adjusted accordingly.

Windscreen wipers with rain sensor

The windscreen wiper assembly is located under the cover beneath the windscreen. It comprises a motor, arm assembly and two wiper arms with wiper blades. The wipers are controlled by the rain sensor and rear and underhood electrical centers.

The windscreen wipers have two speeds (high/low) and an automatic mode. There are three alternative levels of sensitivity for the rain sensor which can be selected by means of the SID control panel (SIDC).

Windscreen wipers without rain sensor

The windscreen wiper assembly is located under the cover beneath the windscreen. It comprises a motor, arm assembly and two wiper arms with wiper blades. The wipers are controlled by the Underhood Electrical Center.

The windscreen wipers have two speeds (high/low) and one intermittent wiper position, the frequency of which can be regulated to intervals of between 2 and 15 seconds by a thumbwheel on the stalk-switch.

Headlamp washers

A washer jet is mounted on a telescopic cylinder in the bumper in front of each headlamp. The headlamp washers are activated at the same time as windscreen washing.

Washer assembly

The washer assembly is located at the front of the left-hand front wing. It consists of a reservoir with two pumps and a level switch. The washer nozzles are located on the bonnet.

Operation of the system is controlled by the underhood electrical center (UEC). A message is transmitted on the bus if the washer fluid level is low. The audio system generates a warning tone and a message is displayed on the SID.

Rear window wash and wipe, 5D

The rear window wiper unit is located in the tailgate spoiler and comprises a wiper motor and a washer nozzle. The system is operated using a slider on the wiper stalk switch. The following functions are available: single wiper stroke, intermittent wipe or wash and wipe.

The wiper arm is always parked in its starting position, even if the ignition is turned from ON while the wiper arm is in motion. The logic for this function is in REC.

Windscreen Wiper Operation, Detailed Description

The windscreen wiper assembly is located under the cover beneath the windscreen. The wipers are controlled by the stalk-switch to the right of the steering column. The assembly comprises a motor, two wiper arms and a crank mechanism which converts the motor rotation into the reciprocating motion of the wipers. The motor has a built-in thermoswitch which trips if the wipers are activated and the blades are jammed (e.g. frozen to the windscreen).

Scheme 6: Windscreen Wiper Operation, Detailed Description

The operation of the windscreen wipers is controlled by the Underhood Electrical Center (UEC). The windscreen wipers have two speeds (high/low) and one intermittent wiping mode. In the intermittent mode the time interval between wipes can be regulated to between 2 and 15 seconds with a thumbwheel on the stalk-switch.

The wiper stalk-switch (61) is integrated with the CIM (703). The CIM transmits a message on the bus giving the position of the stalk-switch. Windscreen wiping is only possible when the ignition switch is in either the OFF or the ON position.

The windscreen wiper assembly is located under the cover beneath the windscreen. The wipers are controlled by the stalk-switch to the right of the steering column.

Scheme 8: Windscreen Wiper With Rain Sensor, Detailed Description

The function is controlled by the electrical center in the engine compartment. If the washer fluid level is low a message is transmitted on the bus. The audio system generates a warning tone and a message is displayed on the SID.

Scheme 10: Windscreen Washing, Detailed Description

If the washer fluid level is less than 1 liter SID displays a message and the headlamp washing function is blocked in order to save washer fluid.

Headlight Washing, Detailed Description

A washer nozzle is mounted on a telescopic cylinder in the bumper in front of each headlight. A cover hides the washer nozzle within the bumper when the system is inactive. During washing the cylinder raises the nozzle up from the bumper and two jets are directed at the headlight glass.

Scheme 11: Headlight Washing, Detailed Description

Headlight washing is started when the windscreen washer switch (61) is activated for more than 0.6 seconds. The ignition must be ON, the headlights switched on and the vehicle speed less than 200 km/h in order that the washing shall start. The washing period is 1.3 seconds.

Further headlight washing is prevented until a period of 120 seconds has elapsed since the previous wash or until windscreen washing has been activated 5 times. If however the ignition is switched off and on, the headlight washing will start directly when the headlight washer switch (61) is activated.

If the washer fluid level is less than 1 liter the UEC will not start the washer pump. The UEC transmits the bus message "Washer fluid, level low ON" which the ICM uses to display a message on the SID.

When windscreen washing is activated with the wiper stalk, CIM (703) sends the bus message "Windscreen washer, stalk active ON" provided that the ignition is ON. This bus message is used by UEC (342) to activate the headlamp washer relay (667). B+ voltage is supplied from UEC (342) pin 22 (F) to the headlamp washer pump, which starts.

The following preconditions must be satisfied before headlight washing will occur

  1. Ignition ON
  2. EU: Parking lights or dipped beam on
  3. US/CA: Dipped beam on
  4. Vehicle speed less than 200 km/h
  5. More than 120 seconds have elapsed since the washer pump was last activated, or the windscreen washer has been activated 5 times since the last headlight wash.
  6. The washer fluid level is not low.
