  1. Operate/move the seats to their rearmost positions.
  2. Remove the front side pieces from the floor console.
  3. Remove the cover from over the gear lever housing, use «82 93 474 Removal tool»(ref-275881-S37803564382007122900000) in the rear edge of the cover and pull back.
  4. AUT: Remove the clamp.
  5. Remove the cover under the handbrake by pulling it straight out.
  6. Remove the cover on the passenger side by squeezing the cover and lifting it up. Remove the compartment under the cover on the passenger side.
  7. Lift up the rubber mat in the floor console storage compartment and remove the screws.
  8. Remove the floor console screws, note that the screws for plastic and aluminum are different.
  9. Remove the sound insulation (certain cars).
  10. Press in the four catches (two on each long side) and press down the ignition switch module.
  11. Lift up the floor console slightly and remove the ignition switch module.
  12. Remove the connector, see «CONNECTORS, HANDLING AND CHECKING ITEM 1D»(ref-275861-S34879971862007122900000) .

  1. Plug in the connector to the ignition switch module, see «CONNECTORS, HANDLING AND CHECKING ITEM 1D»(ref-275861-S34879971862007122900000) .
  2. Lift up the floor console slightly and fit the ignition switch module. Make sure all four catches are in the correct position.
  3. Fit the floor console screws and tighten them. Put the rubber mat back into the storage compartment.
  4. Fit the cover under the handbrake lever.
  5. Fit the compartment and cover on the passenger side.
  6. AUT: Fit the clamp.
  7. Fit the cover over the gear lever housing.
  8. Fit the front side pieces on the floor console.
  9. Connect Tech2 and clear any DTCs.

Procedures after disconnecting the battery

  1. Clear diagnostic trouble codes in all systems. IMPORTANT: Some diagnostic trouble codes can be generated if there is a voltage drop. These diagnostic trouble codes can be ignored and will not be regenerated after deletion.
  2. Set the clock as follows: 2.a. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. 2.b. Press CUSTOMIZE on SIDC (SID control panel). 2.c. Turn the INFO knob until the displays shows "Clock/Alarm". Press to confirm "OK". 2.d. Turn the INFO knob to "Set Clock". Press "OK". 2.e. Turn the INFO knob to "Manual" or "RDS adjust" and set the correct time. Press "OK".
  3. Set the date as follows: 3.a. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. 3.b. Turn the INFO knob to "DATE". 3.c. Press the INFO knob until the display shows "YEAR 2000". 3.d. Turn the INFO knob to the correct year. Press to confirm "OK". 3.e. Turn the INFO knob to the correct month. Press "OK". 3.f. Turn the INFO knob to the correct date. Press "OK". IMPORTANT: Draw the customer's attention to the fact that all remote controls must be synchronized by placing the key/keys in the ignition lock. If this is not done, the remote control will not work.
  4. Synchronize the remote control's code by inserting the key in the ignition switch. WARNING: The trap protection is not active until the window lifters have been calibrated after a power failure.
  5. Cars with pinch protection: Program the pinch protection, see «SPS PROGRAMMING»(ref-275877-S27161402552007122900000) .

Starter motor

When the engine is started and the engine speed exceeds the starter motor RPM, the pinion is disengaged from its shaft via a free wheel. This prevents the starter motor from overrevving.

The starter motor is fitted on to the engine block. A solenoid engages a pinion with the ring gear on the engine flywheel.

Ignition switch

The starter motor is activated when the ignition key is in the Start position. The ignition lock unit reads the key transponder code and sends this on the K-line to the steering column control module (CIM).

Column Integration Module

When the transponder code is approved, the steering column module (CIM) sends a signal to the ignition switch to allow the key to turn.

Engine control module

Once the control module receives a ready signal from CIM via a bus message, it grounds the starter relay control coil. All conditions for immobilization must be fulfilled before the CIM can send a ready signal to ECM. See IMMOBILIZATION .

Gear selector, automatic

The gear selector on cars with automatic transmission allows start only when the selector lever is in position P or N.

Starting interlock contact, clutch pedal

Some cars with manual gearboxes made for the US/CA market are equipped with a contact for the clutch pedal that does not allow the car to be started unless the pedal is in the depressed position.

Working circuit

The working circuit runs from the battery's positive terminal to terminal 30 on the starter motor.

Operating circuit for manual gearbox

The control circuit goes from the battery positive terminal partly to the ignition switch, partly via the start relay to the starter motor connection 50, which is the control current connection on the solenoid.

The clutch pedal must be depressed on cars for the US/CA market if the starter relay contacts are to receive current.

The starter relay control coil is grounded via the engine control module when it receives the approved transponder signal from the CIM.

WARNINGNothing may be connected to the circuit between the generator and the battery. Spikes of up to 100V can occur.

Operating circuit for automatic transmission

The control circuit goes from the battery positive terminal partly to the ignition switch, partly via the start relay to the starter motor connection 50, which is the control current connection on the solenoid. The selector lever must be in P or N for the starter relay coil to receive a voltage. The starter relay control coil is grounded via the engine control module when it receives the approved transponder signal from the CIM.

Act as the electrical centre for the front of the car and handle some parts of the logic for the front lighting as well as the visibility and signal systems.

Distributes current from the battery to the other electrical centers.

STARTER MOTOR SPECIFICATION

General

The demands on the car's functionality have developed strongly during the last years. Development has primarily affected the car's electrical system. From Saab 900 1994 when the instrument bus with 4 control modules via Saab 9-5 and 9-3 with the Infotainment bus and the Power train bus and 13 control modules on to the Saab 9-3 Sport Saloon with at most 30 control modules.

In addition to the I-bus and the P-bus, an Optical bus was introduced on the Saab 9-3 Sport Saloon, which interconnects the car's infotainment system. Furthermore, an electrically controlled steering column lock was introduced. Initially it will be possible to SPS program 8 of the car's control modules. Most of the car's control modules have a flash memory and will be successively included in SPS. A new function in TIS 2000 allows you to access new SPS files via the Internet between CD releases.

Bus

Bus configuration can be read and reset as before. An addition is that, besides "Missing" and "OK", "Added" is also shown if a unit has been fitted without resetting the bus list. Furthermore, "Not fitted" is shown for control modules that are not mounted and should not be mounted in the car. The bus list is divided into four pages, two for the I-bus, one for the P-bus and one for the O-bus.

With an "Add / Remove" of a control module updating of the list takes place automatically. In connection with the trouble code reading a check is made on the buses in accordance with the previous concept. Further tools have been introduced for fault diagnosis of the buses. A fault counter in each control module can be read and reset using the diagnostic tool. The counter's value increases with short term breaks to the control module in question.

  1. The customer's description of the problem constitutes a basis for the fault diagnosis strategy. If necessary, the customer must demonstrate the trouble on the car to avoid misunderstandings.
  2. In certain cases, the function may be correct. 2.a. Good product knowledge is required to decide this. 2.b. If the function is correct, this must be explained to the customer.
  3. If the function is judged to be faulty, the car should be repaired. Saab's fault diagnosis strategy assumes that the technician is familiar with the customer's description of the problem. So note the customer's complaint and any other observations on the job sheet.
  4. The technician obtains a readout of the diagnostic trouble codes from all systems. A malfunction in one system can often be caused by a fault in another system.
  5. The car may contain diagnostic trouble codes which are secondary faults or which have been incorrectly generated. 5.a. Compare the customer complaint with the symptom description for the various diagnostic trouble codes. WIS has a quick search function for this purpose. 5.b. If the symptom description for a diagnostic trouble code matches the customer's complaint, this diagnostic trouble code is probably caused by the primary fault. Repair as per instructions.
  6. If there is no match with diagnostic trouble codes or symptoms, the technician must diagnose the fault himself. 6.a. Search in WIS under fault diagnosis for symptoms in the system where the fault exists. Also check whether there is a TSB/MI in force. 6.b. If the symptom description in the current system matches the complaint, the right fault diagnosis description has probably been found. Repair as per instructions.
  7. Certain fault symptoms can be remedied by reprogramming the control module. 7.a. Does the customer complaint stem from a known software problem in a programmable control module? 7.b. Reprogram the control module following the instructions in SPS.
  8. If there is no match with diagnostic trouble codes or symptoms, the technician must diagnose the fault himself. Good technical product knowledge is required to solve this type of problem.
  9. A final check must be carried out after the repair.
  10. The car is ready.

Control module

When the control module is supplied with current, the processor in it is tripped. The processor then reads the instructions stored in the control module's memory.

The control module is programmed to read the inputs and activate the outputs. If the control module program is faulty, the diagnostic trouble code "Internal Control Module Fault" will be generated.

The control module must be supplied with current before the system will function. The control module is supplied with current and the processor tripped when the control module can be contacted by the diagnostics instrument.

Outputs

The purpose of the system is to control a number of functions by means of various actuators, such as an injector or lamp. For the system to be capable of performing its functions, it must be possible to activate the actuators. For this reason the actuators must be connected to the control module and have a proper power supply or ground connection.

The performance of the majority of the actuators can be checked with the diagnostics instrument.

Inputs

A condition for the control module's capability of controlling its actuators is that the system's sensors supply it with correct values.

Sensor performance can be checked with the diagnostics instrument.

  1. When detaching connectors with locks, it is essential that the lock is released before the connector is detached. Ensure the connector locks properly when connecting. Example of some different connector types used in the car: 1.A. Pull out the slide to unlock the connector. After attaching the connector lock it by pressing in the slide. NOTE: Using a small screwdriver will help to unlock the connector. 1.B. Press in the lock tab to unlock the connector. Make sure the connector is locked properly when connecting. 1.C. Pull out the slide to unlock the connector. After attaching the connector lock it by pressing in the slide. 1.D. Press in the brace catch and push forward the brace. Push back the brace to lock the connector after connecting. NOTE: Make sure the brace is locked in the right position to ensure good contact between connectors. 1.E. Lift up the lock tab to unlock the connector. Make sure the connector is locked properly when connecting. 1.F. Press in the connector lock tab to release the brace. Release the connector slide while pushing the brace forward. NOTE: The connector may be damaged if too much force is used to push forward the brace without first releasing the slide. Push back the brace to lock the connector after connecting.
  2. Ground yourself by touching the car body/engine before removing or fitting any of the connectors on the car's control modules.
  3. Never pull the wiring harness when removing a connector.
  4. Never touch the pins on the control module with your hands or clothes. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  5. When testing only probe tips intended for the purpose are to be used to avoid damaging the contacts. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the right size.
  6. Connectors may only be repaired when using specified special tools and spare parts.
  7. The following connectors must not be repaired: Screened wires/coaxial cables (e.g. ESP sensor cable) Airbag system and pyrotechnical seat-belt tensioner system High tension cable (e.g. ignition system, xenon lamp).

  1. Check for any contact problems in connections.
  2. Check contacts, connectors and crimp connections with respect to oxidation, loose pins and pin clamping force. IMPORTANT: Incorrect handing or the use of the wrong tool can damage the sleeves in the connector. Use a test cable (part no. 86 12 731) of the correct size to avoid damaging the sleeves in the connector.
  3. To check the connector clamping force, use a test cable with the right pin size (from kit 86 12 731). NOTE: Using a test cable that is too big will damage connector sleeves. Insert the test cable pin into the connector pin to feel the clamping force of the pins in question. Poor clamping force of the connector pins can cause bad contact. Also check that the engagement height of the pin is the same as the other pins in the connector. An engagement height that is too low could be an indication of a loose pin in the connector, which could cause bad contact.
  4. Check wires and connections for open circuits.
  5. Check wiring harness, connectors and ground connections.

The ignition key cannot be turned to the LOCK position

Cars affected: Saab 9-3 M06-, or if the CIM has been replaced in older cars

Procedure

  1. If the ignition key cannot be turned to LOCK, turn it back to the ON position. Wait for approx. 2 seconds. Then turn it back to the LOCK position.
