  1. Shift transmission into 4th gear. Remove driver's seat and left console trim (9-3), or gearshift boot (9-5). Check if locking dowel can be inserted into hole in gearshift lever housing. (Scheme 2)or (Scheme 3). Remove plastic plug on transmission and insert Locking Dowel (87 92 335) so 4th gear is locked. (Scheme 4) On 9-3, ensure locking dowel ring is at top. On all models, if locking dowel cannot be inserted, go to next step and adjust gear position. Remove locking dowel if no adjustment is necessary.
  2. Loosen clamp holding gear rod in transmission linkage. (Scheme 5) Ensure gearshift lever is in 4th gear. Position locking dowel in gearshift lever housing. Working from above, tighten nut on clamp joint which holds selector rod to transmission linkage.
  3. Remove locking dowel from transmission and install plastic plug. Remove locking dowel from gearshift lever housing and reinstall components. Test by operating gearshift lever.
