Scheme 174: REMOVAL
  1. Raise vehicle.
  2. Mark front and rear propeller shafts for alignment reference.
  3. Support transmission with jack stand.
  4. Remove the transfer case skid plate, if equipped.
  5. Disconnect front and rear propeller shafts at transfer case.
  6. Disconnect transfer case vent hose.
  7. Disconnect the shift linkage at the transfer case lever.
  8. Unplug the transfer case position indicator switch (3).
  9. Support transfer case with transmission jack.
  10. Secure transfer case to jack with jack straps or chains.
  11. Remove nuts attaching transfer case (2) to transmission (1).
  12. Pull transfer case and jack rearward to disengage transfer case.
  13. Remove transfer case from under vehicle.

  1. Place the transfer case so that it can be drained of any remaining fluid and remove the fill (2) and drain plugs (1).
  2. Remove the rear output shaft flange nut (1), if equipped.
  3. Remove the flange spacer (1), if equipped.
  4. Remove the flange dust seal, if equipped.
  5. Using a suitable puller, remove the output flange, if equipped.
  6. Remove the position switch (1).
  7. Remove all of the case half bolts (2).
  8. Using a prybar at pry points (1), carefully separate and remove the rear case half.
  9. Remove the retaining ring (1).
  10. Remove the locking collar (1).
  11. Remove the mode shift fork, spring and sleeve (1) from the main shaft (2).
  12. Remove the chain (2), the front output gear (1) and mainshaft gear (3) as an assembly. NOTE: There are three alignment tabs and an oil pump hose pass through incorporated into the support that prevent the structure from rotating once installed.
  13. Remove the center bearing support assembly (2) from the mainshaft (1).
  14. Remove the oil pump (1).
  15. Remove the magnet (1).
  16. Remove the shift shaft (1).
  17. Remove the mainshaft (1).
  18. With the shifter (1) rotated fully, remove the lower shift fork (2), and the reduction hub (3) as an assembly.
  19. Separate the lower shift fork (2) from the reduction hub (3).
  20. Lift the planetary carrier (1) straight up and out of the annulus gear (2). NOTE: Bearing tabs face upward.
  21. Remove the carrier thrust bearing (1) from the center of the planetary (2).
  22. Remove the annulus gear retainer (1).
  23. Remove the annulus gear (1).
  24. Carefully pry detent spring (1) from pocket in case.
  25. Remove detent spring (1) and collar (2).
  26. Using a T20 Torx® screwdriver, loosen retaining screw (1).
  27. Remove manual shift lever (1) from case.
  28. Remove the shift fork lever (1).
  29. Remove the front output shaft retaining ring (1) from the front output shaft (2).
  30. Remove the front output shaft (1) from the front case half (2).
  31. Remove front output shaft seal.
  32. Using (special tool #9622, Installer, Countershaft Plug) (1) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2), remove the front output shaft bearing from the case half (3).
  33. Remove input shaft seal.
  34. Using (special tool #9622, Installer, Countershaft Plug) (1) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2), remove the input shaft bearing from the case half (3).
  35. Remove rear output shaft seal.
  36. Using (special tool #5066, Installer, Bushing) and (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (1), remove the input shaft bearing from the case half (2).
  37. Secure the rear case half.
  38. Using (special tool #7794-A, Remover, Seal) (2) and (special tool #C-637, Slide Hammer, Universal) (1), remove front output shaft rear bearing (3) from rear case half.
