Removal & Installation

  1. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Disconnect battery.
  2. Remove driver side air bag unit. See «DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG UNIT»(ref-160463-S26109706202004021000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  3. Place mating marks on steering wheel and steering column for centering of air bag spiral spring.
  4. Remove steering wheel by releasing multiple-tooth screw.
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure wheels are still in straight-ahead position. Align mating marks made during removal.
  6. Tighten steering wheel screw to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-161370-S09566516982004040700000) . Air bag unit must lock with an audible click. Check by pulling at air bag.
  7. If vehicle is equipped with electronic level control (air suspension), initialize steering angle sensor. See «INITIALIZING STEERING ANGLE SENSOR»(ref-161370-S18927618472004040800000) under INITIALIZING & CALIBRATING STEERING ANGLE SENSOR.
