DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT LOCK CONTROL

Begin the system diagnosis by reviewing the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT LOCK CONTROL DESCRIPTION & OPERATION . Reviewing the Description and Operation information will help you determine the correct symptom diagnostic procedure when a malfunction exists. Reviewing the Description and Operation information will also help you determine if the condition described by the customer is normal operation. SYMPTOMS - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT LOCK CONTROL

Visual/Physical Inspection

  1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the automatic transmission shift lock control system. Refer to «CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES»(ref-186703-S26730152142005090100000) in Wiring Systems.
  2. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.

  1. Remove the bezel. Refer to BEZEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) CLUSTER in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  2. Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to STEERING COLUMN TRIM COVERS REPLACEMENT in Steering Wheel and Column.
  3. Remove the instrument panel trim panel. Refer to TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) CENTER in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  4. Remove the front floor trim plate. Refer to TRIM PLATE REPLACEMENT - FRONT FLOOR CONSOLE in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  5. Remove the front floor console cover. Refer to CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - FRONT FLOOR in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  6. Disconnect the park lock cable from the shift lock lever.
  7. Disconnect the park lock cable from the shift lever plate.
  8. Disconnect the cable clamp.
  9. Turn the ignition switch to the ACC or Run position.
  10. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the cable from the upper bracket.
  11. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ACC or RUN position.
  2. Connect the cable to the upper bracket.
  3. Connect the cable clamp.
  4. Shift the manual selector to Neutral.
  5. Using a small screwdriver, unlock the lock tab on the cable adjustment assembly (1).
  6. Install the park lock cable through the hole of the shift lever plate, then press the retainer into the shift lever plate.
  7. Connect the park lock cable to the shift lock lever.
  8. Ensure that the ignition switch is in the ACC or RUN position and the manual lever is in the Neutral position.
  9. Press the lock tab on the cable adjustment assembly.
  10. Check park lock cable for proper operation.
  11. Install the front floor console cover. Refer to CONSOLE REPLACEMENT - FRONT FLOOR in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  12. Install the front floor trim plate. Refer to TRIM PLATE REPLACEMENT - FRONT FLOOR CONSOLE in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  13. Install the instrument panel trim panel. Refer to TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) CENTER in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  14. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to STEERING COLUMN TRIM COVERS REPLACEMENT in Steering Wheel and Column.
  15. Install the bezel. Refer to BEZEL REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) CLUSTER in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
