TRANSAXLE APPLICATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
CAUTIONBefore servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
CAUTIONUse the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transaxle.
  3. Remove the starter assembly from the engine. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL.
  4. Remove the 6 flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. (Scheme 106)
  5. Remove the transaxle drain plug and drain oil. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-152378-S07439413892003013100000) under LUBRICATION in SERVICING - VIBE (AWD) article.
  6. Remove the engine and transaxle as an assembly from the vehicle. See appropriate MECHANICAL article in ENGINES.
  7. Remove the transfer case assembly from the transaxle. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - VIBE»(ref-155009) article in TRANSFER CASES.
  8. Remove the 2 bolts and ground cables from the transaxle. (Scheme 107)
  9. Disconnect the 3 transaxle wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
  10. Disconnect the breather hose from the transaxle.
  11. Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt. (Scheme 108)
  12. Remove the 6 transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. (Scheme 109)
  13. Separate the transaxle from the engine assembly.
  14. Remove the left transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly.
  15. Remove the front transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly. (Scheme 110)
  1. Install the front transaxle mounting bracket on the transaxle assembly. (Scheme 110) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  2. Install the left transaxle mounting bracket on the transaxle assembly. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  3. Position the transaxle on the front suspension crossmember.
  4. Install the 6 transaxle-to-engine retaining bolts (1, 2 and 3). (Scheme 109) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  5. Install the front mount through bolt. (Scheme 108) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  6. Install the transfer case assembly on the transaxle. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - VIBE»(ref-155009) article in TRANSFER CASES.
  7. Connect the 3 electrical connectors to the transaxle.
  8. Install the 2 bolts and ground cables to the transaxle. (Scheme 107) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  9. Install the engine and transaxle as an assembly in the vehicle. See appropriate MECHANICAL article in ENGINES.
  10. Install the 6 torque converter bolts. (Scheme 106) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  11. Install the starter assembly in the vehicle. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL.
  12. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
  13. Install the drain plug with a NEW gasket. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Fill the transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level. See «LUBRICATION»(ref-152378-S13633286332003013100000) in SERVICING - VIBE (AWD) article.
  1. Install appropriate engine support fixture.
  2. Remove the right hand and left hand splash shields.
  3. Remove the 2 bolts from the front transaxle mount.
  4. Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt. (Scheme 108)
  5. Remove the insulator-to-mount bracket.
  6. Remove the 2 front transaxle bracket bolts and bracket from the transaxle.
  1. Install the front transaxle bracket and bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  2. Install the insulator-to-mount bracket.
  3. Install the front transaxle mount through bolt. (Scheme 108) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  4. Install the 2 bolts to the front transaxle mount. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000).
  5. Install the left hand and right hand splash shields.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Remove the engine support fixture.
  1. Remove the positive and the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the battery hold down bracket bolt and nut.
  3. Remove the battery bracket.
  4. Remove the battery and the battery tray.
  5. Disconnect the IAT connector.
  6. Remove the IAT sensor.
  7. Remove the air cleaner hose and cap assembly.
  8. Remove the air filter.
  9. Remove the 3 air cleaner lower box bolts.
  10. Remove the air cleaner box.
  11. Support the engine with the engine support fixture.
  12. Remove the transaxle left mount through bolt.
  13. Remove the 4 bolts and the left transaxle mount.
  14. Remove the 3 left transaxle bracket bolts and bracket.
  1. Install the 3 left transaxle bracket and bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000) .
  2. Install the left transaxle mount and the 4 bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000) .
  3. Install the transaxle mount through bolt. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000) .
  4. Remove the engine support fixture.
  5. Install the air cleaner box.
  6. Install the 3 air cleaner box bolts.
  7. Install the air filter.
  8. Install the air cleaner hose and cap assembly.
  9. Install the IAT sensor.
  10. Connect the IAT connector.
  11. Install the battery tray and battery.
  12. Install the hold down bracket.
  13. Install the hold down bracket bolt and nut. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155674-S40693967392003061900000) .
  14. Install the positive and negative battery cables.
