- Verify that each injector harness is connected to the correct injector or cylinder. Relocate injector harnesses as necessary.
Sensor/System
- Check the air intake system and crankcase for air leaks.
- Check the crankcase ventilation system for proper operation.
- Use a scan tool to monitor the Knock Sensor (KS) system for excessive spark retard activity.
Ignition System

- Remove spark plugs and check for correct heat range, wet plugs, cracks, wear, improper gap, burned electrodes, heavy deposits and verify that the spark plugs are of the correct type.
- Check for proper ignition voltage output with the HEI Spark Tester (J 26792), or equivalent.
- An improper spark plug gap will cause a driveability condition. Gap the spark plugs using a wire gauge gap tool.
- Determine the cause of the fouling before replacing the spark plugs.
- Check for damaged or misaligned spark plug boots.
- Check the Ignition Control Module (ICM) module for proper ground connection.
- Monitor the MISFIRE CURRENT COUNTERS while driving the vehicle in the conditions that the symptom occurred. If a misfiring cylinder can be located, use the DTC P0300 diagnostic procedures for diagnosis. Engine Mechanical

- Check the Throttle Position (TP) sensor and related circuits.
- Check the crankcase ventilation system for proper operation.

Engine Cooling System
Check for obvious overheating conditions
- Low engine coolant.
- A faulty thermostat.
- A restricted air flow to the radiator or restricted coolant flow through the radiator.
- An inoperative electric cooling fan.
- Proper tension on the drive belts.
- Correct coolant solution should be a 50/50 mix.
Check for the following engine mechanical conditions
- Excessive oil in combustion chamber or leaking valve seals.
- High cylinder compression.
- Combustion chambers for excessive carbon buildup.
- Incorrect camshaft timing.

If no, system is okay at this time.

- Verify there is adequate fuel.
- Check the fuel pump operation. The fuel pump should turn ON for 2 seconds when the ignition switch is turned to RUN position. - Check for collapsed, damaged, loose, improperly installed, or leaking air intake ducts.
- Check the Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S). The HO2S should respond quickly to different throttle positions. If they do not, check the HO2S for silicon or other contaminates from fuel or the use of improper RTV sealant. The sensors may have a White, powdery coating and result in a high but false signal voltage rich exhaust indication. The PCM will then reduce the amount of fuel delivered to the engine causing a severe driveability problem.
- Check for the following that may cause the engine to run rich: Any water intrusion in the HO2S connector. The engine oil contaminated by fuel. An EVAP canister purge condition. - Check the Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S). The HO2S should respond quickly to different throttle positions. If they do not, check the HO2S for silicon or other contaminates from fuel or the use of improper RTV sealant. The sensors may have a White, powdery coating and result in a high but false signal voltage rich exhaust indication. The PCM will then reduce the amount of fuel delivered to the engine causing a severe driveability problem.

- To properly check the spark plugs or to correct a condition, go to the following procedures: Ignition System Specifications. - Remove spark plugs and check for correct heat range, wet plugs, cracks, wear, improper gap, burned electrodes or heavy deposits. Verify the spark plugs are of the correct type.
- Check for proper ignition voltage output with the HEI Spark Tester (J 26792), or equivalent.
- An improper spark plug gap will cause a driveability condition. Gap the spark plugs using a wire gauge gap tool.
- Determine the cause of the fouling before replacing the spark plugs.
- Check for damaged or misaligned spark plug boots.
- Check the Ignition Control Module (ICM) module for proper ground connection.
- Monitor the MISFIRE CURRENT COUNTERS while driving the vehicle in the conditions that the symptom occurred. If a misfiring cylinder can be located, use the DTC P0300 diagnostic procedures for diagnosis. INTERMITTENTS

Note. The condition may or may not illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) or store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). The fault must be present to be diagnosed.

INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS
Most intermittent conditions are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring. Perform a careful visual/physical check. Check for the following conditions
- Poor mating of the electrical connector halves or a terminal not fully seated in the electrical connector (backed out).
- All electrical connector terminals in the problem circuit should be carefully checked for proper contact tension.
- Poor terminal to wire connection. This requires removing the terminal from the connector body to check.
The vehicle may be driven with a DMM connected to a suspected circuit. An abnormal voltage is a good indication that there is a malfunction in the circuit being monitored.
A scan tool can be used to help detect intermittent conditions. The scan tool has several features that can be used to locate an intermittent condition.
The Snapshot feature can be triggered to capture and store engine parameters within the scan tool when the malfunction occurs. This stored information then can be reviewed by the service technician to see what caused the malfunction.
Using a scan tools Freeze Frame buffer can also aid in locating an intermittent condition. Review and record the information in the Freeze Frame associated with the intermittent DTC being diagnosed. The vehicle can be driven within the conditions that were present when the DTC originally set.
To check loss of DTC memory, disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor and idle the engine until the MIL, CHECK ENGINE, illuminates. DTC P0122 should be stored and kept in memory when the ignition is turned OFF. If not the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is faulty. When this test is completed, make sure that you clear the DTC P0122 from memory.
An intermittent MIL or CHECK ENGINE, with no stored DTC may be caused by the following
- The ignition coil shorted to ground and arcing at ignition wires or plugs.
- The MIL, check engine, wire to PCM shorted to ground.
- Poor PCM grounds.
If the intermittent condition exists as a start and then stall, check for DTCs relating to the vehicle theft deterrent system.
They can cause a sharp electrical surge. Normally, the problem will occur when the malfunctioning component is operated. Check for improper installation of electrical options such as lights, cellular phones etc. All Ignition Control Module (ICM) wiring should kept away from the generator. Check all wires from the PCM to the ICM for poor harness connections. Check for an open diode across the A/C compressor clutch and check for other open diodes.
