When required, ESP improves driving stability in all driving situations, irrespective of road surface and tyre grip characteristics. It also comprises the functionality of the traction control system.
The system monitors the movement of the vehicle. As soon as the vehicle starts to swerve, the engine output is reduced and individual wheels are braked. The responsible sensors are the yaw rate sensor (1), which is mounted near the selector lever and the steering angle sensor in the steering column electronics module.
This leads to an improvement in driving stability, especially under conditions of snow and ice as well as on wet or slippery road surfaces.
The ESP is operational as soon as the ignition is switched on and the telltale (1) extinguishes.
Activation of the ESP is indicated by flashing of the telltale (arrow). The vehicle is then in a borderline condition; the ESP prevents degeneration into an uncontrolled driving state and reminds the driver that driving speed must be adapted to the road conditions.
The telltale (arrow) illuminates for several seconds when the ignition is switched on.
The system is now operational.
If the telltale flashes (arrow) during driving, the system is undergoing intervention. The engine output may be reduced and slight automatic braking of the vehicle may occur.
If the telltale illuminates (arrow) during driving, there is a fault in the ESP system. It is possible to continue driving. Driving stability can diminish, depending upon road surface conditions.
