Alternator, Check (Installed)

Check is composed of power check and regulated voltage check, carry out regulated voltage check first.

The check can be carried out on vehicle as well as on test bench, the check described here is on a vehicle, which can be applied analogously to test bench.

A charged battery is required for this check.

Note the following safety measures

1. Negative terminal of battery, alternator and regulator must match.

2. Never allow the alternator to run on an uncontrolled open circuit.

3. Never short the terminals to alternator and regulator.

Regulated voltage.

Connect voltmeter between 'L' terminal of alternator and earth°- run engine to around 3,000 rpm - switch off all electrical devices.

If battery voltage exceeds 16V - repair or replace alternator.

Output current.

Connect ammeter between output terminal of alternator and battery positive terminal - run engine to around 3,000 rpm with all electrical devices switched on - e.g. headlights, heater blower.

Current should be:

For 60A alternator - 20 A.

For 75 A alternator - 25 A.
