The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is intended to increase driving safety. The purpose of the ESP is to stabilise the vehicle in critical situations (e.g. uneven braking force, braking on bends, cornering too fast or driving on slippery roads), therefore preventing the vehicle from skidding.
The ESP applies exactly metered braking force at each wheel. Wheel (1) is the braked wheel.

Function:
ESP control is a constituent of the ABS control unit, detecting critical driving situations by comparing the driver's wishes (target behaviour) with the actual behaviour of the vehicle. The relevant actuators are activated accordingly. Intervention takes place in the engine management system and the brake system, whereby each wheel is braked individually.
Information is provided by the existing ABS 5.3/TC components and by additional pressure, steering angle and yaw rate/acceleration sensors.
EPS system intervention is shown by an indicator light on the instrument cluster.
