ABS - ABS telltale illuminated after starting the engine
Models:
Frontera 95.5-96
Engines:
All
Option:
ABS
Group:
H - Brakes
Troublecode:
Non
Complaint:
Electrical failures
ABS telltale remains illuminated after starting the engine.
Cause:
A low voltage situation during engine cranking may cause trouble codes to be set and causing ABS to shut down.
Special part:
No
Production Solution:
Remedy:
Restore normal ABS operation.
The following Trouble Codes may be stored in the ABS control
unit (displayed with TECH I):
| Stored Trouble Code (TC) | Affected Circuits |
|---|---|
| 16, 17, 28 and 29 (stored collectively) | System fault in solenoid valve circuits |
| 52 | System fault in check light circuit |
The following operation should be carried out prior to replacement of any ABS components in order to confirm the cause of the condition:
1. Check for line interruptions. Clean all ABS related plug connections, including the power supply side, the 50 Amp fuse and the grounding points.
2. Allow engine to run ensuring that all auxiliary electrical consumers have been switched off prior to starting.
3. Switch off the engine and wait 15 seconds before restarting.
If the ABS telltale remains illuminated the system should be checked for trouble codes, otherwise continue with next step.
4. Repeat operation number 3 five times.
5. If the ABS telltale goes off in operation 3 and 4 as in normal operation, it is likely to assume that the problem was caused by a low voltage situation and that a replacement of the complete ABS unit or the coil integrated module is required. The part to be replaced is determined by the manufacture date of the ABS unit, which is represented by a four digit code.
This date code (A) is stamped in the top surface of the hydraulic control unit as shown in illustration U9947. The table listed on the following page gives the appropriate information on the requested part which should be applied.
6. If the ABS telltale remains on at all times, it is assumed that a system fault other than the one mentioned before is detected. Use TECH I in conjunction with Checking Procedure Brochure "ABS-415, Anti-Lock Brake System" to check the ABS system.
| The replacement should be carried out in accordance with the operations described in the relevant Service Instructions (group H) and TI-C-21, H-47 dated November 1995. | |||

E.g.:
0025 = 2nd January 1995
0325 = 1st February 1995
