The new steering column jacket (1) for the Astra-H is adjustable for length and rake. Despite the adjusting mechanism being a smaller design, the steering column can be adjusted lengthways by 50 mm, whilst the rake can be adjusted by 40 mm.
The crash performance of the steering column has also been improved. The steering column is fitted with a safety device which prevents the steering column from dropping down in the event of a crash. The safety device consists of a pin which, should the steering wheel start to drop down, engages in the recess provided. This prevents the steering column from dropping down thus contributing considerably to driver protection.
When in the locked position, the adjusting lever (2) is enclosed in a safe position in the steering wheel panelling.
