TORQUE CONVERTER SERVICE

The torque converter should be replaced under any of the following conditions

  1. External leaks in the hub weld area.
  2. Converter hub is scored or damaged.
  3. Converter pilot is broken, damaged or fits poorly into crankshaft.
  4. Steel particles are found after flushing the cooler and cooler lines.
  5. Pump is damaged or steel particles are found in the converter.
  6. Vehicle has TCC shudder and/or no TCC apply. Replace only after all hydraulic and electrical diagnoses have been made. (Converter clutch material may be glazed.)
  7. Converter is contaminated with engine coolant containing antifreeze.
  8. Internal malfunction of stator roller clutch.
  9. Heavy clutch debris due to overheating (blue converter).
  10. Steel particles or clutch lining material found in fluid filter or on magnet when no internal parts in unit are worn or damaged - indicates that lining material came from converter.

The torque converter should not be replaced if

  1. The fluid has an odor, is discolored, and there is no evidence of metal or clutch facing particles.
  2. The threads in one or more of the converter bolt holes are damaged.
  3. CVT malfunction did not display evidence of damaged or worn internal parts, steel particles or clutch plate lining material in unit and inside the fluid filter.
  4. Vehicle has been exposed to high mileage (only). The exception may be where the torque converter clutch dampener plate lining has seen excess wear by vehicles operated in heavy and/or constant traffic, such as taxi, delivery or police use.

Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid

If an unexpected signal is sent from the solenoid to the TCM, the torque converter clutch solenoid is turned OFF to cancel the lock-up.

TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID VALVE

  1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
  2. Disconnect CVT unit harness connector.
  3. Check resistance between CVT unit harness connector terminal and ground. CONNECTOR TERMINAL RESISTANCE CHART Solenoid Valve Connector Terminal Resistance (Approx.) Torque converter clutch solenoid valve F46 12 - Ground 3 - 9 ohms
  4. If NG, perform "SELF-DIAG RESULTS" mode for "TRANSMISSION".
