TORQUE CONVERTER SERVICE

The torque converter should be replaced under any of the following conditions

  1. External leaks in the hub weld area.
  2. Converter hub is scored or damaged.
  3. Converter pilot is broken, damaged or fits poorly into crankshaft.
  4. Steel particles are found after flushing the cooler and cooler lines.
  5. Pump is damaged or steel particles are found in the converter.
  6. Vehicle has TCC shudder and/or no TCC apply. Replace only after all hydraulic and electrical diagnoses have been made (Converter clutch material may be glazed).
  7. Converter is contaminated with engine coolant containing antifreeze.
  8. Internal failure of stator roller clutch.
  9. Heavy clutch debris due to overheating (blue converter).
  10. Steel particles or clutch lining material found in fluid filter or on magnet when no internal parts in unit are worn or damaged - indicates that lining material came from converter.

The torque converter should not be replaced if

  1. The fluid has an odor, is discolored, and there is no evidence of metal or clutch facing particles.
  2. The threads in one or more of the converter bolt holes are damaged.
  3. Transmission failure did not display evidence of damaged or worn internal parts, steel particles or clutch plate lining material in unit and inside the fluid filter.
  4. Vehicle has been exposed to high mileage (only). The exception may be where the torque converter clutch dampener plate lining has seen excess wear by vehicles operated in heavy and/or constant traffic, such as taxi, delivery or police use.

Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Valve Control

The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is controlled by the TCM. The plunger closes the drain circuit during the OFF period, and opens the circuit during the ON period. If the percentage of OFF-time increases in one cycle, the pilot pressure drain time is reduced and pilot pressure remains high.

The torque converter clutch piston is designed to slip to adjust the ratio of ON-OFF, thereby reducing lock-up shock.

  1. Install upper and lower bodies. Place oil circuit of upper body face up. Install steel balls in their proper positions. Install reamer bolts from bottom of upper body. Place oil circuit of lower body face up. Install orifice check spring, orifice check valve and pilot filter. Install separator plate on lower body. Install and temporarily tighten support plates, fluid temperature sensor and tube brackets. Temporarily assemble lower and upper bodies, using reamer bolt as a guide. Be careful not to dislocate or drop steel balls, orifice check spring, orifice check valve and pilot filter. Install and temporarily tighten bolts and tube brackets in their proper locations. Bolt length and location
  2. Install solenoids. Attach O-ring and install torque converter clutch solenoid valve and side plates onto lower body. Attach O-rings and install 3-unit solenoids assembly onto upper body. Attach O-ring and install line pressure solenoid valve onto upper body.
  3. Tighten all bolts.

  1. Remove valves at parallel pins. Do not use a magnetic hand. Use a wire paper clip to push out parallel pins. Remove parallel pins while pressing their corresponding plugs and sleeves. Remove plug slowly to prevent internal parts from jumping out. Place mating surface of valve face down, and remove internal parts. If a valve is hard to remove, place valve body face down and lightly tap it with a soft hammer. Be careful not to drop or damage valves and sleeves.
  2. Remove valves at retainer plates. Pry out retainer plate with wire paper clip. Remove retainer plates while holding spring. Place mating surface of valve face down, and remove internal parts. If a valve is hard to remove, lightly tap valve body with a soft hammer. Be careful not to drop or damage valves, sleeves, etc. 4-2 sequence valve and relay valve are located far back in upper body. If they are hard to remove, carefully push them out using stiff wire. Be careful not to scratch sliding surface of valve with wire.

  1. Measure free length and outer diameter of each valve spring. Also check for damage or deformation. Inspection standard: Refer to " «RETURN SPRINGS»(ref-207295-S14929501082005120100000) ".
  2. Replace valve springs if deformed or fatigued.
