IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE-FAST IDLE CONTROL DEVICE (IACV-FICD) SYSTEM TEST - EXCEPT MAXIMA & SENTRA
- Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Check idle speed. See SERVICE & ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS article. Adjust, if necessary. Turn A/C and blower on. If idle speed increases by 50 RPM or more, system is okay. If idle speed does not increase by 50 RPM or more, go to next step.
- Check A/C compressor operation. Repair A/C system, if necessary. If A/C compressor operation is okay, check IACV-FICD power and ground circuits. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary. If circuits are okay, go to next step.
- Check ambient air temperature sensor (if equipped). See appropriate AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING. Replace, if necessary. If ambient air temperature sensor is okay, go to next step.
- Check IACV-FICD solenoid. See «IACV-FICD SOLENOID»(ref-3193-S28486791972000041900000) . Replace, if necessary. If IACV-FICD solenoid is okay, no problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
EVAP System Leak Test
| CAUTION | DO NOT apply more than.6 psi (.04 kg/cm 2 ) of pressure to EVAP system. DO NOT use compressed air. |
Note. DO NOT start engine.
Connect suitable pressure pump with gauge to EVAP service port. See VACUUM DIAGRAMS article for location. Using jumper wires, apply battery voltage to EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve (EVAP-CVCV) and vacuum cut valve by-pass valve. (Scheme 35)through (Scheme 41). Apply.2-.4 psi (.01-.03 kg/cm 2 ) of pressure to EVAP service port. Remove pressure pump from EVAP service port. Using Leak Detector (J41416), locate EVAP system leak.

Refueling Control Valve Test (Altima)
Remove refueling control valve from fuel tank. See VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. Inspect control valve for cracks. Blow air into port "A". Air should flow freely out of port "B". (Scheme 42) Blow air into port "C". Air should not flow. Apply 2.9 psi (.02 kg/cm 2 ) of pressure to ports "A" and "C". Air should not escape from port "B". If operation is not as specified, replace control valve. If operation is as specified, test is complete.
Scheme 42
Refueling Control Valve Test (Maxima & Sentra)
Remove fuel filler cap. Blow air into hose "B". (Scheme 43)or (Scheme 44). Air should flow freely into fuel tank. Blow air into hose "A". Air should not flow. Using a hand pressure pump with a vacuum "T", apply 2.9 psi (.02 kg/cm 2 ) pressure to hoses "A" and "B". Air should not escape. If operation is not as specified, replace fuel tank and control valve. If operation is as specified, test is complete.

Refueling EVAP Vapor Cut Valve Test (Altima)
Note. EVAP vapor cut valve is not replaceable. If defective, fuel tank must be replaced.
Scheme 45
- Remove fuel tank. Remove fuel level sensor unit retainer. Drain fuel from tank using a hand pump. Check valve head for cracks. To check if refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is stuck closed, blow air into vapor cut valve. (Scheme 45) If air flows freely into fuel tank, go to next step. If air does not flow freely into fuel tank, replace fuel tank.
- To check if refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is stuck open, connect a vacuum pump to valve. Remove fuel gauge/fuel level sensor unit. Invert fuel tank. Apply 3.94 in. Hg (13.3 kPa) of vacuum to valve. If vacuum does not hold, replace fuel tank. If vacuum holds, refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is okay.
Refueling EVAP Vapor Cut Valve Test (Maxima & Sentra)
Note. EVAP vapor cut valve is not replaceable. If defective, fuel tank must be replaced.
Scheme 46
- Remove fuel tank. Remove fuel level sensor unit retainer. Drain fuel from tank using a hand pump. To check if refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is stuck closed, blow air into vapor cut valve through hose "B" (to refueling EVAP vapor cut valve). (Scheme 44)and (Scheme 46). If air flows freely into fuel tank, go to next step. If air does not flow freely into fuel tank, replace fuel tank.
- To check if refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is stuck open, connect a vacuum pump to hose ends "A" and "B" with a 3-way connector. Remove fuel gauge/fuel gauge retainer unit. Invert fuel tank. Apply 3.94 in. Hg (13.3 kPa) of vacuum to valve. If vacuum does not hold, replace fuel tank. If vacuum holds, refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is okay.
Refueling One-Way Fuel Valve Test (Altima, Maxima & Sentra)
Note. One-way fuel valve is not replaceable. If defective, fuel tank must be replaced.
Remove fuel tank. Drain fuel from tank using a hand pump. Remove fuel filler tube and hose. To check if one-way fuel valve is functioning properly, insert stick into valve. If valve opens when stick is inserted and closes when stick is removed, valve is okay. If valve does not open when stick is inserted and close when stick is removed, replace fuel tank.
Scheme 47
- Remove EVAP canister with EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve (EVAP-CVCV) attached. Weigh EVAP canister with EVAP-CVCV attached. If weight is less than 4.0 lbs. (1.8 kg), go to next step. If weight is more than 4.0 lbs. (1.8 kg), go to step 3.
- Invert EVAP canister. If water drains from EVAP canister, go to next step. If water does not drain from EVAP canister, go to step 5.
- Replace EVAP canister. Remove water separator. (Scheme 47) Inspect water separator and hose for cracks or blockage. Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step. CAUTION: DO NOT disassemble water separator.
- With water separator port "A" plugged, blow air into port "B". (Scheme 48) Air should flow out of port "C". With port "C" plugged, blow air into port "B". Air should flow out of port "A". If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace water separator.
- Check refueling EVAP vapor cut valve. See appropriate REFUELING EVAP VAPOR CUT VALVE TEST. If refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is okay, go to next step. If refueling EVAP vapor cut valve is not okay, replace fuel tank.
- Check refueling control valve. See appropriate REFUELING CONTROL VALVE TEST. If refueling control valve is okay, test is complete. If refueling control valve is not okay, replace fuel tank.
