PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Most engine control system driveability problems result from faulty wiring, poor electrical connections, improper wire routing, or leaking air and vacuum hose connections. Inspect all engine control system components, hoses, connectors and wiring for damage before proceeding with symptom diagnosis.
SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting the battery. |
Symptom checks cannot be used properly unless problem occurs while vehicle is being tested. To reduce diagnostic time, ensure steps in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article and SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - LANCER - 2.0L TURBO article were performed before diagnosing a symptom. Trouble Shooting Hints
Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the data link connector.
- Damaged wiring harness.
Diagnostic Procedure
- Measure voltage between terminal No. 16 (Green/Red wire) and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connectors C-126, C-212 and C-214 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connectors are okay, repair open in White/Red or Green/Red wire between fusible link (1) and data link connector C-14 terminal No. 16. Confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for continuity between data link connector C-14 terminals No. 4, 5 and ground. Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. If continuity exists, replace scan tool. Confirm the malfunction symptom is eliminated. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between data link connector C-14 terminal No. 4 or 5 and ground. Then confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE 2: COMMUNICATION WITH SCAN TOOL IS NOT POSSIBLE (COMMUNICATION WITH ECM ONLY IS NOT POSSIBLE)

Most likely causes
- Malfunction of ECM power supply circuit.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Open circuit between ECM and data link connector.
- Check ECM harness connector C-117 for damage. If ECM harness connector is okay, go to next step. If ECM harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. Confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit, short circuit to ground and harness damage in Orange wire between data link harness connector C-14 terminal No. 7 and ECM harness connector C-117 terminal No. 62. If Orange wire is okay, see «INSPECTION PROCEDURE 30: POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM & IGNITION SWITCH - IG SYSTEM»(ref-160101-S14042787042004010700000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If Orange wire is not okay, repair as necessary. Confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE 3: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (SERVICE ENGINE SOON) DOES NOT ILLUMINATE RIGHT AFTER THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED TO ON POSITION

Most likely causes
- Burnt-out bulb.
- Defective malfunction indicator light (SERVICE ENGINE SOON) circuit.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
| CAUTION | To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn the ignition switch to LOCK (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool. |
- Connect scan tool (MB991502 or MB991958), or equivalent, to the data link connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check data list item 16: POWER SUPPLY VOLTAGE. See «DATA LIST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S10766784362004012800000) . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, see «INSPECTION PROCEDURE 30: POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM & IGNITION SWITCH - IG SYSTEM»(ref-160101-S14042787042004010700000) .
- Check for burned-out malfunction indicator light bulb. If bulb is okay, go to next step. If bulb is not okay, replace bulb and confirm the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check combination meter harness connector C-01 for damage. If combination meter harness connector C-01 is okay, go to next step. If combination meter harness connector C-01 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect combination meter harness connector C-01. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage at combination meter harness connector C-01 terminal No. 9 (Yellow/Red wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If about 12 volts exists, go to next step. If about 12 volts does not exist, check harness connectors C-23, C-211 and C-214 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. Confirm the malfunction symptom is eliminated. If intermediate connectors are okay, repair open in Black/White or Yellow/Red wire between ignition switch harness connector C-208 terminal No. 2 and combination meter harness connector C-01 terminal No. 9. Confirm the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-119 for damage. If ECM harness connector C-119 is okay, go to next step. If ECM harness connector C-119 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-119. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 36 (White/Blue wire) and ground. If battery voltage exists, replace ECM. Confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector C-124 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connectors is okay, repair open in Yellow/Red or White/Blue wire between combination meter harness connector C-01 terminal No. 17 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 36. Confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE 4: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (SERVICE ENGINE SOON) REMAINS ILLUMINATED & NEVER GOES OUT
For malfunction indicator lamp circuit, related component & connector terminals (Scheme 216)and (Scheme 217).
Most likely causes
- Short-circuit between the malfunction indicator light (SERVICE ENGINE SOON) and ECM.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
| CAUTION | To prevent damage to scan tool, always turn the ignition to LOCK position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool. |
- Connect scan tool (MB991502 or MB991958), or equivalent, to the data link connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Read DTCs. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If any DTCs set, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-159724-S16676043192003123100000) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - LANCER 2.0L TURBO article. If no DTCs set, go to next step.
- Disconnect combination meter harness connector C-01. Check for continuity between combination meter harness connector C-01 terminal No. 17 (White/Blue wire) and ground. Continuity should not exist. If continuity exists, replace ECM. Confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated. If continuity exists, check intermediate connector C-124 for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector is okay, repair short to ground in White/Blue wire between combination meter harness connector C-01 terminal No. 17 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 36. Confirm the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE 5: ENGINE CRANKS, WILL NOT START
For ignition system circuit and connector identification see scheme 24
Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the ignition system.
- Malfunction of the fuel pump system.
- Malfunction of the injector system.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Contaminated fuel.
- Measure battery voltage during cranking. Voltage should remain more than 8 volts while engine is cranked. If voltage remains more than 8 volts, go to next step. If voltage does not remain more than 8 volts, check battery condition. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check timing belt for breaks. If timing belt is okay, go to next step. If timing belt is not okay, replace timing belt. See appropriate TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT article in ENGINES. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Connect scan tool (MB991502 or MB991958), or equivalent, to the data link connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check the following items in the data list. See «DATA LIST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S10766784362004012800000): ITEM 16: POWER SUPPLY VOLTAGE ITEM 22: CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR ITEM 21: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If items 16, 22 & 21 are operating properly, go to next step. If items 16, 22 or 21 are not operating properly, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Check ITEM 07: FUEL PUMP. See «DATA LIST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S10766784362004012800000). Turn ignition to LOCK position. If the actuator is operating properly, go to next step. If actuator is not operating properly, repair or replace as necessary. Confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Connect a timing light to the ignition coil connector B-103 or B-114 terminal No. 1, in order. see scheme 24 Crank engine. Timing light should flash. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If timing light flashed, go to next step. If timing light did not flash, see «INSPECTION PROCEDURE 33: IGNITION CIRCUIT SYSTEM»(ref-160101-S26674912542004010700000).
- Check ignition timing at cranking. See «IGNITION TIMING CHECK»(ref-157284-S00058501372003081300000) under IDLE SPEED & IGNITION TIMING in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Standard value should be at 5° BTDC plus or minus 3°. If ignition timing is within specification, go to next step. If ignition timing is not within specification, otherwise, check that the crankshaft position sensor and timing belt cover are in the correct position. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check harness connectors B17, B-18, B-20 and B-22 at injector for damage. If harness connectors are okay, go to next step. If any connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect the injector harness connectors B17, B-18, B-20 and B-22. Measure resistance between each injector side connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2. Resistance should be between 2-3 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace injector. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-121 for damage. If ECM C-121 harness connector is okay, go to next step. If ECM C-121 harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check wiring harness for damage between injector harness connectors and ECM harness connector. See «INJECTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-160101-S33977080022004012700000). If wiring is okay, then check following items: Check ignition coil, spark plugs and spark plug cables. Check if injectors are clogged. Check if fuel is contaminated. Check compression. If any of the circuits are defective, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.

INJECTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION
Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the ignition system.
- Malfunction of the injector system.
- Contaminated fuel.
- Poor compression.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Measure battery voltage during cranking. Voltage should remain more than 8 volts while engine is cranked. If voltage remains more than 8 volts, go to next step. If voltage does not remain more than 8 volts, check battery condition and charging system. See appropriate CHARGING SYSTEMS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Connect scan tool (MB991502 or MB991958), or equivalent, to the data link connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Read DTCs. Turn ignition to LOCK position. If any DTCs are set, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-159724-S16676043192003123100000) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - LANCER 2.0L TURBO article. If no DTCs are set, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, check ITEM 07: FUEL PUMP. See «DATA LIST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S10766784362004012800000) . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If the actuator is operating properly, go to next step. If the actuator does not operate properly, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, check ITEM 21: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. See «DATA LIST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S10766784362004012800000) . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If sensor is operating properly, go to next step. If the actuator does not operate properly, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check engine start ability. Depress accelerator pedal slightly and start engine. If startability is okay, go to next step. If startability is not okay, go to step 7 .
- Verify that the engine coolant temperature is 68°F (20°C) or less. Check if the operation sound of the Idle Air Control (IAC) motor can be heard after the ignition is switched to ON position. If IAC operation can be heard, clean the throttle valve area. See «THROTTLE BODY (THROTTLE VALVE AREA) CLEANING»(ref-159724-S29207691012004011200000) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - LANCER 2.0L TURBO article. If IAC operation cannot be heard, see «DTC P0506: IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM RPM LOWER THAN EXPECTED»(ref-159724-S06495020042003123100000) and «DTC P0507: IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM RPM HIGHER THAN EXPECTED»(ref-159724-S07776462592003123100000) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - LANCER 2.0L TURBO article.
- Check ignition timing at cranking. See «IGNITION TIMING CHECK»(ref-157284-S00058501372003081300000) under IDLE SPEED & IGNITION TIMING in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Standard value is 5° BTDC plus or minus 3°. If ignition timing is within specification, go to next step. If ignition timing is not within specification, check crankshaft position sensor and timing belt cover are in correct position. Repair as necessary. After repair, confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check harness connectors B-22, B-20, B-18, or B-17 at injector for damage. If all harness connectors are okay, go to next step. If any harness connector is not okay, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect injector harness connectors B-17, B-18, B-20 and B-22. Measure resistance between each injector side terminals No. 1 and No. 2. If resistance is 2-3 ohms at 68°F (20°C), go to next step. If resistance is not 2-3 ohms, replace appropriate injector(s). After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-121 for damage. If ECM harness connector C-121 is okay, go to next step. If ECM harness connector C-121 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for harness damage between injector harness connector and ECM harness connector. See «INJECTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-160101-S33977080022004012700000) . If circuits are not okay, repair as necessary. Confirm the malfunction symptom is eliminated. If circuits are okay, check the following items, and repair or replace as necessary: Check the ignition coil, spark plugs and spark plug cables. Check if the injectors are clogged. Check compression pressure. Check fuel lines for clogging. Check if the foreign material (water, kerosene, etc.) got into fuel.
Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the ignition system.
- Malfunction of the injector system.
- Poor fuel quality. (Contamination)
- Poor compression.
- Measure battery positive voltage during cranking. Voltage should remain over 8 volts while engine is cranking. If voltage remains over 8 volts, go to next step. If voltage does not remain over 8 volts, see appropriate CHARGING SYSTEM article in ELECTRICAL.
- Connect scan tool (MB991502 or MB991958), or equivalent, to the data link connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Read DTCs. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If any DTCs set, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-159724-S16676043192003123100000) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - LANCER 2.0L article. If no DTCs set, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, check data list ITEM 07: FUEL PUMP. See «DATA LIST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S10766784362004012800000) . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If actuator operates properly, go to next step. If actuator does not operate properly, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, check the ITEM 21: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. See «DATA LIST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S10766784362004012800000) . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If sensor operates properly, go to next step. If sensor does not operate properly, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ignition timing at cranking. See «IGNITION TIMING CHECK»(ref-157284-S00058501372003081300000) under IDLE SPEED & IGNITION TIMING in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Standard value is 5° BTDC plus or minus 3°. If ignition timing is within specification, go to next step. If timing is not within specification, check crankshaft position sensor and timing belt cover are in the correct position. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check injector harness connectors B-22, B-20, B-18 or B-17 for damage. If harness connectors are okay, go to next step. If harness connectors are not okay, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect injector connectors B-17, B-18, B-20 and B-22. Measure resistance between each injector side connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2. If resistance is 2-3 ohms 68°F (20°C), go to next step. If resistance is not 2-3 ohms, replace appropriate injector(s). After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-121 for damage. If ECM harness connector C-121 is okay, go to next step. If ECM harness connector C-121 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check harness damage between injector harness connector and ECM harness connector. See «INJECTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-160101-S33977080022004012700000) . If wiring harness is okay, check the following items. Repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated: Check ignition coil, spark plugs and spark plug cables. Check if injectors are clogged. Check compression pressure. Check if foreign materials (water, kerosene, etc.) got into fuel.
Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the ignition system.
- Malfunction of air/fuel ratio control system.
- Malfunction of the IAC system.
- Malfunction of the evaporative emission purge solenoid system.
- Poor compression pressure.
- Vacuum leak.
- Malfunction of the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve system.
- Check if battery terminal was disconnected recently. If battery has been disconnected recently, start the engine and let run at idle for about 10 minutes. If a malfunction occurs after engine warm up, go to next step. If a malfunction occurs after warm up, go to next step.
- Connect scan tool (MB991502 or MB991958), or equivalent, to the data link connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Read DTCs. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If any DTC set, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-159724-S16676043192003123100000) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - LANCER 2.0L TURBO article. If no DTCs set, go to next step.
- Check engine idling state. If idle is hunting remarkably, go to next step. If idle is not hunting remarkably, go to step 5 .
- Clean throttle valve area. See «THROTTLE BODY (THROTTLE VALVE AREA) CLEANING»(ref-159724-S29207691012004011200000) in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - LANCER 2.0L TURBO article. - Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, check the following items on the data list, ITEM 11: HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (FRONT). See «DATA LIST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S10766784362004012800000) . Voltage should fluctuate between 0-0.4 volt and 0.6-1.0 volt while idling after engine has warmed-up. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If sensor operating properly, go to step 8 . If sensor is not operating properly, go to next step.
- Check fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE»(ref-157284-S02075003012003080800000) under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If fuel pressure is within specification, check for a clogged injector or the following for a vacuum leak: Broken intake manifold gasket. Broken air intake hose. Broken vacuum hose. Positive crankcase ventilation valve does not operate. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated. If fuel pressure is not within specification, repair or replace necessary components. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.

If fuel pressure within specification, check the following items. Repair or replace defective items as necessary: Check ignition coil, spark plugs and spark plug cables. Check supercharging pressure. - Check the exhaust gas with engine at normal operating temperature. If after warm up, was exhaust gas is excessively high, go to next step. If after warm up, exhaust gas is still excessive, check it again after warm up.
- Check the following items: Check all vacuum hoses and connectors. Check electrical wires and connectors for obvious problems. Check exhaust system for missing or damaged parts. If all items are okay, go to next step. If any of the items are not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.

When engine is decelerated suddenly from 4000 RPM, output voltage should increase from 200 mV or less to 600-1000 mV in a few seconds. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If sensor operates properly, go to next step. Voltage should measure 0.6 volt or less when idling. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If sensor operates properly, go to step 12 . If sensor does not operate properly, replace the heated oxygen sensor (front). After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE»(ref-157284-S02075003012003080800000) under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If fuel pressure is within specification, go to next step. If evaporative emission ventilation solenoid is okay, check the following: Check for leaks from the vapor line or evaporative emission canister. Check for leaks from the fuel tank. After repair, confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated. If evaporative emission ventilation solenoid is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.

- Short circuit in the harness between generator "G" terminal ECM.

- Do not disconnect the harness connector B-14. Start engine and run at idle. Measure voltage by backprobing between terminal No. 10 and ground under the following conditions: Engine: warming up. Radiator fan: stopped. Headlight switch: OFF to ON. Rear defogger switch: OFF to ON. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If measured voltage is between 0.2 and 3.5 volts, replace the generator. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated. If measured voltage is not between 0.2 and 3.5 volts, go to next step.
- Check harness connector B-14 at generator intermediate connector for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check harness connector B-25 at generator connector for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm that malfunction is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-119 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit and short to ground and wiring harness damage in Blue/White wire between generator harness connector B-25 terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 33. If wiring harness is okay, replace ECM. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated. If wiring harness is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.

- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-121 and measure at harness side. Start engine and run at idle. Turn A/C switch on. Measure voltage between terminal No. 24 and ground. If atmospheric air temperature is 59°F (15°C) or less, the voltage should measure 1 volt or less. If atmospheric air temperature is 65.4°F (18°C) more, voltage should measure battery voltage. If measured voltage is as specified, replace the ECM. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated. - Disconnect ECM harness connector C-121. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 21 (Blue wire) and ground. Voltage should measure between 4.8 volts and 5.2 volts. (Fan rotates at high speed). Connect a jumper cable between ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 21 and ground. Fan should stop. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If voltage and fan condition are as specified, replace ECM. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated. If voltage and fan condition are not as specified, go to next step.
- Check for open circuit and short circuit to ground and harness damage in Blue wire between fan control module harness connector A-17 terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 21. If wiring harness is okay, see appropriate COOLING SYSTEM article in ENGINE. If wiring harness is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.

- Malfunction of the condenser fan control relay.
- Malfunction of the condenser fan motor.
- Improper connector contact, open or short-circuited harness wire.
- ECM failed.
- Check ECM harness connector C-119 for damage. If harness connector okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-119. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between ECM harness connector terminal No. 34 (Blue wire) and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Check condenser fan condition. When terminal No. 34 is disconnected, fan should stop. When terminal No. 34 is grounded by jumper cable, fan should run. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If voltage and fan operate normally, go to next step. See appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
- Disconnect connector C-119 and measure harness side. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between terminal No. 32 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Check condenser fan condition. When terminal No. 32 is disconnected, fan should stop. When terminal No. 32 is grounded by the jumper cable, fan should run. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If voltage and fan operation are okay, replace ECM. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated. Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the ignition switch.
- Malfunction of the MFI relay.
- Improper connector contact, open circuit or short-circuited harness wire.
- Disconnected ECM ground wire.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Check MFI relay connector B-12X for damage. If the connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove MFI relay. Check for continuity between MFI relay terminals No. 2 and No. 3. Continuity should be about 70 ohms. Use jumper wires to connect MFI relay terminal No. 2 to positive battery terminal and MFI relay terminal No. 3 to the negative battery terminal. Check for continuity between the MFI relay terminals No. 1 and No. 4 while connecting and disconnecting the jumper wire at the negative battery terminal. Resistance should be less than 2 ohms with negative battery terminal connected. Resistance should be infinite with negative battery terminal disconnected. Install MFI relay. If measured resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace MFI. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect connector B-12X. Measure voltage, at harness side, between connector B-12 terminals No. 1 and 2 and ground. Voltage should be battery voltage. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector A-13 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector is okay, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between relay box (fuse 8) and MFI relay connector B-12X (terminals No. 1 and 2). After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-115 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect harness connector C-115. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between terminal No. 82 (Black/Red wire) and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector C-123, C-210 and C-211 at intermediate connector for damage and repair or replace as required. If intermediate connectors are okay, repair open in Black/Red wire between ignition switch harness connector C-208 (terminal No. 2) and ECM harness connector C-115 (terminal No. 82). After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect intermediate harness connector C-115. Measure voltage, at harness side, between terminal No. 80 (Red/Black wire) and ground. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check intermediate connector A-13 for damage. Repair as necessary. If the intermediate connectors are okay, repair open in Red/Black wire between relay box (fuse 8) and ECM connector C-115 (terminal No. 80). After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-121. Check continuity of Black wire between harness connector C-121 terminals No. 13 and 26 and ground. Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between ECM harness connector C-121 terminals No. 13 and No. 26 and ground. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-119. Measure voltage, at harness side, between terminal No. 38 (Red wire) and ground. Voltage should be battery voltage. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exits, repair open in Red wire between MFI relay connector B-12X terminal No. 3 and ECM connector C-119 terminal No. 38. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connectors C-121 and C-119. Using a jumper wire, connect terminal No. 38 to ground. Measure voltage, at harness side between terminals No. 12 and 25 (both Red/Yellow wires) and ground. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, replace ECM. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated. If battery voltage does not exist, check intermediate connector C-105 for damage. Repair as necessary. If the intermediate connector is okay, repair open in Red/Yellow wire between MFI relay connector B-12X terminal No. 4 and ECM harness connector C-121 terminals No. 12 and 25. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the fuel pump relay.
- Malfunction of the fuel pump.
- Malfunction of the fuel pump resistor.
- Improper connector contact, open or short-circuited harness wire.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Connect scan tool (MB991502 or MB991958), or equivalent, to the data link connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Set scan tool to the actuator test mode for ITEM 07: FUEL PUMP. See «ACTUATOR TEST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S42697495602004012800000) . An operation sound of the fuel pump should be heard. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If fuel pump is operating properly, go to next step. If fuel pump is not operating properly, go to step 3 .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Set scan tool to the actuator test mode for ITEM 13: FUEL PUMP RELAY 3. See «ACTUATOR TEST REFERENCE DATA»(ref-160101-S42697495602004012800000) . An high speed operating sound of the fuel pump should be heard. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If the high speed operation sound is heard, malfunction is intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-160101-S25763657902004012600000) . If high speed operating sound is not heard, go to step 19 .
- Check fuel pump relay 1 connector C-223 and fuel pump relay 2 connector C-221 for damage. If both connectors are okay, go to next step. If either connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check fuel pump resistor harness connector B-121 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove fuel pump relays 1 and 2. Check for continuity between fuel pump relay terminals No. 2 and 3. Continuity should be about 70 ohms. Use jumper wires to connect fuel pump relay terminal No. 3 to the positive battery terminal and terminal No. 2 to the negative battery terminal. Check for continuity between the fuel pump relay terminals No. 1 and No. 4 while connecting and disconnecting jumper wire. Resistance should be less than 2 ohm when negative jumper is connected and infinite (open loop) when negative jumper is disconnected. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace fuel pump relay. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect fuel pump resistor harness connector B-121. Measure resistance between fuel pump resistor side connector terminals No. 1 and 2. Resistance should be 0.45-0.65 ohm at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace the fuel pump resistor, After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove fuel pump relay 1. Measure voltage, at harness side, between fuel pump relay 1 connector C-223 terminal No. 4 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connectors C-129 and C-210 at intermediate connector for damage, and repair as necessary. If intermediate connectors are okay, repair open in White/Gray wire between relay box (fuse 15) and fuel pump relay 1 connector C-223 (terminal No. 4). After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove fuel pump relay 1. Measure at harness side. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between fuel pump relay 1 connector C-223 terminal No. 3 and ground. Voltage should be positive. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector C-211 at intermediate connector for damage, and repair or replace as required. If intermediate connector is okay, repair open in Black/White wire between ignition switch connector C-208 terminal No. 2 and fuel pump relay 1 connector C-223 terminal No. 3. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove fuel pump relay 1. Measure at harness side. Check continuity between fuel pump relay 1 connector C-223 terminal No. 2 and ground. If continuity is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in wire between fuel pump relay 1 connector C-223 (terminal No. 2) and ground. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove fuel pump relay 2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side of fuel pump relay connector C-221, between fuel pump relay 2 connector terminal No. 1 and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in circuit between fuel pump relay 1 connector C-223 (terminal No. 1) and fuel pump relay 2 connector C-221 (terminal No. 1), then confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove fuel pump relay 2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side of fuel pump relay connector C-221, between terminal No. 3 and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector C-211 at intermediate connector for damage, and repair or replace as required. If the intermediate connector is okay, repair open in circuit between ignition switch connector C-208 terminal No. 2 and fuel pump relay 2 connector C-221 terminal No. 3. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect connector B-121. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between harness connector B-121 terminal No. 1 (White/Red wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector C-123 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector is okay, repair open in White/Red wire between fuel pump relay 2 connector C-221 (terminal No. 4) and fuel pump resistor connector B-121 (terminal No. 1). After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check fuel pump harness connector D-12 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect fuel pump harness connector D-12. Use jumper wires to connect fuel pump harness connector terminal No. 5 to the positive battery terminal and terminal No. 4 to negative battery terminal. An operating sound of the fuel pump should be heard. If fuel pump is operating properly, go to next step. If fuel pump is not operating properly, replace fuel pump. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect fuel pump harness connector D-12. Check for continuity between harness connector D-12 terminal No. 4 (Black wire) and ground. Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check harness connector D-34 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector is okay, repair open or damage in Black wire between fuel pump harness connector D-12 terminal no. 4 and ground. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit and short circuit to ground and harness damage in Red wire between fuel pump resistor harness connector B-121 terminal No. 2 and fuel pump harness connector D-12 terminal No. 5. If Red wire is okay, go to next step. If Red wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-121 for damage. If harness connector C-121 is okay, go to next step. If harness connector C-121 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect harness connector C-121. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between terminal No. 22 (Violet wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, check harness connectors C-123 and C-214 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector is okay, repair open in Violet wire between fuel pump relay 2 connector C-221 terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 22. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check fuel pump relay 3 connector B-120 for damage. If connector B-120 is okay, go to next step. If connector B-120 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove fuel pump relay 3. Check for continuity between fuel pump relay terminals No. 3 and 4. Continuity should be about 70 ohms. Use jumper wires to connect fuel pump relay terminal No. 4 to positive battery terminal and terminal No. 3 to negative battery terminal. Check for continuity between fuel pump relay terminals No. 1 and No. 2 while connecting and disconnecting jumper wire at negative battery terminal. Should be less than 2 ohms with jumper disconnected. Should be infinite (open loop) with jumper connected. If resistance is as specified, install fuel pump relay and go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace fuel pump relay 3. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Remove fuel pump relay 3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between fuel pump relay 3 harness connector B-120 terminals No. 2 (Red/White wire), No. 4 (Red/White wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connectors C-123 and C-214 at intermediate connector for damage, and repair or replace as required. If intermediate connectors are okay, repair open in Red/White wire between fuel pump relay 2 connector C-221 terminal No. 4 and fuel pump relay 3 connector B-120 terminals No. 2 and 4. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit and short circuit to ground and harness damage in Red wire between fuel pump relay 3 harness connector B-120 terminal No. 1 and fuel pump harness connector D-12 terminal No. 5. If Red wire is okay, go to next step. If Red wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-119 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm that symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-119. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between terminal No. 39 (Red/Black wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, replace ECM. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Red/Black wire between fuel pump relay 3 connector B-120 terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 39. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.

- Check starter relay. If starter relay is okay, go to next step. If starter relay is not okay, replace relay. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect connector B-07X. Turn ignition switch to START position. Measure voltage between terminals No. 2, No. 3 (both Yellow/Black wires) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. Check connector C-123 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as required. If intermediate connector is okay, repair open in Yellow/Black wire between ignition switch harness connector C-208 terminal No. 5 and starter relay connector B-07X terminals No. 2 and No. 3. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-115 for damage. If harness connector C-115 is okay, go to next step. If harness connector C-115 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-115. Turn ignition switch to START position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between terminal No. 71 (Black/Red wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check connector B-14 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector is okay, repair open in Black/Red wire between starter relay connector B-07X terminal No. 5 and ECM harness connector C-115 terminal No. 71. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check interlock switch harness connector C-131 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check interlock switch. Continuity should exist with clutch pedal released. Continuity should exist with clutch pedal depressed. If interlock switch is okay, go to next step. If interlock switch is not okay, replace interlock switch. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect the harness connector C-131 and measure at the harness side. Turn ignition switch to START position. Measure voltage between terminal No. 1 (Red wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connectors C-124, C-129 and C-133 at intermediate connector for damage, and repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, repair open in Red/Blue, Blue/Orange or Red wires between starter relay connector B-07X terminal No. 1 and interlock switch harness connector C-131 terminal No. 1. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect harness connector C-131. Check for continuity between terminal No. 2 and ground. Should be less than 2 ohms. If continuity exist, replace ECM After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated. If continuity does not exist, check harness connector C-133 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector is okay, repair open in Black or White wire between interlock switch harness connector C-131 terminal No. 2 and ground. Then confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the ignition coil.
- Malfunction of the ignition power transistor.
- Improper connector contact, open circuit or short-circuited harness wire.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Check ignition coil. See «IGNITION SYSTEM»(ref-157284-S06802247132003081200000) under IGNITION CHECKS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If ignition coil is okay, go to next step. If ignition coils are okay, replace the ignition coil. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ignition coil harness connectors B-103 and B-114 for damage. If ignition coil harness connectors are okay, go to next step. If ignition coil harness connectors are not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ignition coil harness connectors B-103 and B-114. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between ignition coil harness connectors B-103 and B114 terminal No. 1 (both White/Red wires) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, check connectors A-29, C-129, C-211 and C-214 at intermediate connectors for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connectors are okay, repair open in Black/White, Yellow/Green, White or White/Red wire between ignition switch harness connector C-208 (terminal No. 2) and ignition coil harness connector B-103, B-114 (terminal No. 1). After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ignition coil harness connectors connector B-103, B-114 and measure at harness side. While cranking engine, measure voltage between harness connectors B-103 and B-114 terminal No. 3 (from both connectors) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If voltage is 0.3-3.0 volts, go to step 7 . If voltage is not 0.3-3.0 volts, go to next step.
- Check ECM harness connector C-121 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open and short to ground in Black/Yellow wire between ignition coil 1 harness connector B-103 terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 10. Check Black/Green wire between ignition coil 2 harness connector B-114 terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 23. If Black/Yellow and Black/Green wires are okay, replace ECM. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated. If Black/Yellow and Black/Green wires are not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm that malfunction system is eliminated.
- Check Black/Yellow wire between ignition coil 1 harness connector B-103 terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 10. Check Black/Green wire between ignition coil 2 harness connector B-114 terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 23. If Black/Yellow and Black/Green wires are okay, go to next step. If Black/Yellow and Black/Green wires are not okay. Repair as necessary. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ignition coil 1 and 2 harness connectors B-103 and B-114. Check Black wire for continuity between terminal No. 2 of each harness connector and ground. Resistance should be less than 2 ohms. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in appropriate Black wire between ignition coil harness connector B-103 or B-114 terminal No. 2 and ground. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check engine speed detection harness connector B-06X. If harness connector B-06X is okay, go to next step. If harness connector B-06X is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit and short circuit to ground and harness damage in Green//White wire between engine speed detection harness connector B-06X and ECM harness connector C-117 terminal No. 58. If Green//White wire is okay, check harness connector C-105 at intermediate connectors for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector is okay, replace ECM. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated. If intermediate connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
Most likely causes
- Malfunction of the A/C control system.
- Malfunction of the A/C switch.
- Improper connector contact, open circuit or short-circuited harness wire.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Check ECM harness connectors C-119 and C-121 for damage. If harness connectors are okay, go to next step. If harness connectors are not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-121. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage, at harness side, between ECM harness connector C-121 terminal No. 8 (Pink wire) and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Using jumper wire, connect terminal No. 8 to ground. A/C compressor relay should turn on. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If voltage and A/C compressor relay conditions are as specified, go to next step. If voltage and A/C compressor relay conditions are not as specified, see appropriate MANUAL or AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-119 and measure at harness side. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between terminal No. 45 (Pink wire) and ground. Voltage should measure 1 volt or less when A/C is off. Voltage should measure battery voltage when A/C switch is on. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If the measured voltage is as specified, replace ECM. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated. Most likely causes
- Malfunction of charge air cooler water spray switch.
- Malfunction of charge air cooler water spray relay.
- Malfunction of charge air cooler water spray motor.
- Improper connector contact, open or short-circuited harness wire.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Check operation of the charge air cooler water spray motor. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn on manual switch of the charge air cooler water spray switch. An operation sound of charge air cooler spray motor should be heard. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If the charge air cooler water spray motor operates properly, go to step 4. If the charge air cooler water spray motor does not operate properly, go to next step.
- Check ECM harness connector C-117 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-117. Using jumper wire, connect ECM harness connector C-117 terminal No. 57 (Red/White wire) to ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position. An operation sound of charge air cooler water spray motor should be heard. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If charge air cooler water spray motor operates properly, go to step 10. If charge air cooler water spray motor does not operate properly, go to step 16.
- Check charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-119 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39 and measure the harness side. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between terminal No. 5 (Blue/White wire) and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 9.
- Check charge air cooler water spray switch. (Scheme 218) If charge air cooler water spray switch is okay, go to next step. If charge air cooler water spray switch is not okay, replace the charge air cooler water spray switch. After repair, confirm that the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for damage in Blue/White wire between charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39 terminal No. 5 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 44. If Blue/White wire is okay, then it can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent. See «INTERMITTENTS»(ref-160101-S25763657902004012600000). If Blue/White wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit and short circuit to ground and harness damage in Blue/White wire between charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39 terminal No. 5 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 44. If Blue/White wire is okay, replace ECM. If Blue/White wire is not okay, repair as necessary, After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D13 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-115 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm that malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39 terminal No. 3 (Blue wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 15.
- Check charge air cooler water spray switch. (Scheme 218) If the charge air cooler water spray switch is okay, go to next step. If the charge air cooler water spray switch is not okay, replace the charge air cooler water spray switch. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit and harness damage in Black wire between charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39 terminal No. 2 and ground. If Black wire is okay, check harness connector C-124 at the intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector C-124 is okay, repair Blue or Blue/Red wire between charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39 terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector C-115 terminal No. 91. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated. If intermediate connector C-124 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit and short circuit to ground and harness damage in Blue or Blue/Red wire between charge air cooler water spray switch harness connector D-39 terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector C-115 terminal No. 91. If Blue or Blue/Red wire is okay, replace ECM. If Blue or Blue/Red wire is not okay, repair as necessary, After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check charge air cooler water spray relay harness connector C-222 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Charge air cooler water spray relay check. Remove charge air cooler water spray relay. Check for continuity between charge air cooler water spray relay terminals No. 2 and No. 3. Continuity should be about 70 ohms. Use jumper wires to connect charge air cooler water spray relay (terminal No. 3) to the positive battery terminal and terminal No. 2 to the negative battery terminal. Check for continuity between charge air cooler water spray relay terminals No. 1 and No. 4 while connecting and disconnecting jumper wire. Should be less than 2 ohms (connected) and should be open loop (disconnected). Install charge air cooler water spray relay. If resistance and operation is as specified, go to next step. If resistance and operation are not as specified, replace charge air cooler water spray relay, After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect the harness connector C-222 and measure harness side. Turn ignition switch to on position. Measure voltage between harness connector C-222 terminal No. 3, No. 4 and ground. Battery voltage should exist. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector C-101, C-209, C-210 at intermediate connector for damage, and repair or replace as required. If intermediate connector C-101, C-209, C-210 are okay, repair an open circuit between ignition switch harness connector C-208 terminal No. 4 and charge air cooler water spray relay harness connector C-222 terminal No. 3, No. 4. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-117. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ECM harness connector C-117 terminal 57 (Red/White wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector C-124 and C-209 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connectors C-124 and C-209 are okay, repair open in Red/White wire between charge air cooler water spray relay harness connector C-222 terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector C-117 terminal No. 57. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check charge air cooler water spray relay harness connector A-30 for damage. If harness connector is okay, go to next step. If harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect charge air cooler water spray motor harness connector A-30. Use jumper wires to connect charge air cooler water spray motor harness connector terminal No. 1 to positive battery terminal and terminal No. 2 to negative battery terminal. An operation sound of charge air cooler water spray motor should be heard. If charge air cooler water spray motor operates properly, go to next step. If charge air cooler water spray motor does not operate properly, replace charge air cooler water spray motor. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect charge air cooler water spray motor harness connector A-30 and measure harness side. Check for continuity between terminal No. 2 and ground. Should be less than 2 ohms. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in wire between charge air cooler water spray harness connector A-30 terminal no. 2 and ground. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for open circuit and short circuit to ground and harness damage in Yellow/Red wire between charge air cooler water spray relay harness connector C-222 terminal No. 1 and charge air cooler water spray motor harness connector A-30 terminal No. 1. If Yellow/Red wire is okay, replace ECM. If Yellow/Red wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
Scheme 218
Most likely causes
- Burned-out of bulb.
- Improper connector contact, open or short-circuited harness wire.
- Malfunction of the ECM.
- Check for a burned-out bulb. If bulb is okay, go to next step. If bulb is burned-out, replace bulb. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check ECM harness connector C-119 for damage. If ECM harness connector is okay, go to next step. If ECM harness connector is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm the malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-119. Using jumper wire, connect ECM harness connector C-119 terminal 35 (Yellow/Red wire) to ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If charge air cooler water spray lamp illuminated, see «INSPECTION PROCEDURE 35: CHARGE AIR COOLER WATER SPRAY SYSTEM»(ref-160101-S01892273932004010900000) . If charge air cooler water spray lamp did not illuminate, go to next step.
- Check combination meter harness connector C-01 for damage. If harness connector C-01 is okay, go to next step. If harness connector C-01 is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect combination meter harness connector C-01. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between combination meter harness connector C-01 terminal No. 9 (Yellow/Red wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connectors C-211, C-214 and C-23 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connectors C-211, C-214 or C-23 are not okay, repair open in Yellow/Red wire between combination meter harness connector C-01 terminal No. 9 and ignition switch harness connector C-208 terminal No. 2. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector C-119. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 35 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check harness connector C-124 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector C-124 is okay, repair open in Red/Yellow or Violet wire between combination meter harness connector C-02 terminal No. 33 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 35. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
- Check for harness damage between combination meter harness connector C-01 terminal No. 9 (Yellow/Red wire) and ignition switch harness connector C-208 terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). If circuit is okay, then check harness connector C-124 at intermediate connector for damage. Repair as necessary. If intermediate connector C-124 is okay, repair damage to Violet or Red/Yellow wire between combination meter harness connector C-02 terminal No. 33 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 35. After repair, confirm malfunction symptom is eliminated.
INTERMITTENT PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS
Intermittent fault testing requires duplicating circuit or component failure to identify the problem. These procedures may lead to PCM setting a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) which may help in diagnosis.
If problem vehicle does not produce DTC, monitor voltage or resistance values using a DVOM while attempting to reproduce conditions causing intermittent fault. A status change on DVOM indicates a fault has been located.
Use a DVOM to pinpoint faults. When monitoring voltage, ensure ignition switch is in ON position or engine is running. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position or negative battery cable is disconnected when monitoring circuit resistance. Status changes on DVOM during test procedures indicate area of fault.
