Checking Wheel Bearing Rotation Starting Torque

  1. Install Front Hub Remover and Installer (MB991017 or MB990998) and Spacer (MB991000) as shown in illustration and tighten to 148-184 ft. lbs. (200-250 N.m). (Scheme 28)
  2. Rotate the hub in order to seat the bearing.
  3. Hold front wheel hub assembly in a vice by using a wooden block. (Scheme 29)
  4. Measure the wheel bearing rotation starting torque by using Preload Socket (MB990326) and Torque Wrench (MB990685).
  5. If the rotation starting torque is more than 8.88 INCH lbs. (1.0 N.m), replace the front wheel bearing assembly. If there is any signs of binding or tight spots when the wheel bearing turns, replace it.

  1. Insert the bolt to the assist link slide bushing, attach a washer in the opposition direction, and the install the nut.
  2. Rotate the inner sleeve (including the washer) several times.
  3. Using Preload Socket (MB990326), measure the turning torque of the assist link slide bushing. (Scheme 30)
  4. If the turning torque of the assist link slide bushing is more than 4.4-17.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.0 N.m), replace the assist link.
  5. If the turning torque of the assist link slide bushing is less than 4.4-17.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.0 N.m), check that the assist link slide bushing turns smoothly without excessive play. If there is no excessive play, the slide bushing can be reused.

Checking Lower Arm Pillow Ball Bushing Turning Torque

  1. Insert the bolt to the lower arm pillow ball bushing, attach a washer in the opposition direction, and the install the nut.
  2. Rotate the inner sleeve (including the washer) several times.
  3. Using Preload Socket (MB990326), measure the turning torque of the lower arm pillow ball bushing. (Scheme 31)
  4. If the turning torque of the lower arm pillow ball bushing is more than 4.4-26.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-3.0 N.m), replace the lower arm pillow ball bushing.
  5. If the turning torque of the lower arm pillow ball bushing is less than 4.4-26.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-3.0 N.m), check that the lower arm pillow ball bushing turns smoothly without excessive play. If there is no excessive play, the pillow ball bushing can be reused.

  1. Shake the stabilizer bar link ball joint stud several times.
  2. Using Preload Socket (MB990326), measure the turning torque of the stabilizer bar link ball joint. (Scheme 32)
  3. If the stabilizer bar link ball joint turning torque is more than 15-27 INCH lbs. (1.7-3.0 N.m), replace the stabilizer bar link.
  4. If the stabilizer bar link ball joint turning torque is less than 15-27 INCH lbs. (1.7-3.0 N.m), check that the stabilizer bar link ball joint turns smoothly without excessive play. If there is no excessive play, the ball joint can be reused.

Checking Trailing Arm Ball Joint Turning Torque

  1. Shake the trailing arm ball joint stud several times.
  2. Using Preload Socket (MB990326), measure the turning torque of the trailing arm ball joint. (Scheme 33)
  3. If the trailing arm ball joint turning torque is more than 4.4-22.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.5 N.m), replace the trailing arm assembly.
  4. If the trailing arm ball joint turning torque is less than 4.4-22.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.5 N.m), check that the trailing arm ball joint turns smoothly without excessive play. If there is no excessive play, the ball joint can be reused.

Checking Upper Arm Ball Joint Turning Torque

  1. Shake the upper arm ball joint stud several times.
  2. Using Preload Socket (MB990326), measure the turning torque of the upper arm ball joint. (Scheme 33)
  3. If the upper arm ball joint turning torque is more than 4.4-22.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.5 N.m), replace the upper arm assembly.
  4. If the upper arm ball joint turning torque is less than 4.4-22.0 INCH lbs. (0.5-2.5 N.m), check that the upper arm ball joint turns smoothly without excessive play. If there is no excessive play, the ball joint can be reused.
