GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. The steering wheel has three spokes. All vehicles are equipped with SRS (Supplemental Restraint System).
  2. The steering column has a shock absorbing mechanism and a tilt steering mechanism.
  3. Improved fuel consumption by reduction of engine load, and weight saving by decrease of the number of parts have been achieved with the introduction of the electric power steering system.
  4. Vehicle-speed sensitive electric power steering (whole range type) has been adopted. This system allows a light steering force during stationary steering maneuver or low speed driving, and a moderate steering force during medium or high speed driving.
  5. For vehicles with this system, the electric power steering-ECU controls the motor current according to the vehicle speed and steering force of the steering wheel.
  6. CAN* communication has been adopted in order to communicate with another ECUs for obtaining necessary information related to this control, achieving wiring harness saving and secure data communication. Scheme 2: DESCRIPTION ON SYSTEM

To improve operational reliability, the dual-circuit system has been adopted for the torque sensor. If any malfunction occurs in the electric power steering system, the fail-safe function of the electric power steering-ECU is activated, and the output current of the electric power steering-ECU applied to the motor is turned off. At the same time, the steering system enters manual mode, and informs a driver of the system malfunction by illuminating the warning light on the combination meter. The warning light illuminates when the following malfunctions occur: open circuit in the electric power steering system wiring harness, poor connection, malfunctions in the electric power steering-ECU, motor, or sensors.

Scheme 4: STEERING GEAR

The torque sensor which detects a operated force of the steering wheel is installed in the steering gear. When the steering wheel is turned, the steering force is detected by the torque sensor. At the same time, 2-way supply voltage signal (main and sub) are input to the electric power steering-ECU.

Scheme 5: MOTOR

The motor is installed in the steering gear. The steering motor is applied with a control current sent from the electric power steering-ECU and generates the assist torque to the steering gear according to the steering operation.

Scheme 6: ELECTRIC POWER STEERING-ECU

The electric power steering-ECU is attached below the glove box, which is integrated with an input interface circuit, a microcomputer, an output drive circuit, a fail-safe relay, and a motor line relay etc. It is also integrated with a self-diagnostic function, and illuminates the warning light and sets DTC to the Data link connector.

The electric power steering-ECU performs the data transfer with another ECUs through CAN communication.

FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION

If the electric power steering-ECU detects any malfunction, it illuminates the warning light, deactivates the electric power steering function, and then switches the steering system into manual mode.

DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION

Electric power steering-ECU has the following functions for easier system checks.

  1. DTC set
  2. Service data output

All the above items can be diagnosed using scan tool.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE SET

There are 28 diagnostic items. Since all the diagnostic results are recorded in volatile memory (EEPROM*), they are stored in the memory even though the battery terminals are disconnected.

Note. *: EEPROM (Electrical Erasable & Programmable ROM) Special type of memory that can be programmed or erased electrically. For each diagnostic item, refer to the appropriate service information.

SERVICE DATA OUTPUT

Using scan tool, the input data sent from the sensors and motors can be read.

Note. For each service data item, refer to the appropriate service information.

IGNITION SWITCH ON

Ignition supply voltage is applied to the electric power steering-ECU, and the ECU enters standby mode.

  1. When the engine is started, the engine speed signal sent from the engine control module (ECM) is input to the electric power steering-ECU.
  2. After starting the engine, the electric power steering-ECU judges the engine status "ENGINE SPEED ON" when the engine speed reaches 500 r/min, then the power assist function is ready.

Scheme 8: STEERING WHEEL OPERATION
  1. When the steering wheel is operated, the torque sensor integrated into the gear box detects the steering torque and outputs the torque sensor signal (main and sub), which varies with the steering force, to the electric power steering-ECU.
  2. The electric power steering-ECU outputs the current in proportion to the torque sensor signal to the motor.
  3. The motor outputs the rotational torque (assist torque) in proportion to the current intensity and assists the power steering gear.

FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION OPERATION

During the fail-safe mode, the electric power steering operates as a manual steering system.

HOW TO CONNECT THE SCAN TOOL (M.U.T.-III)

Required Special Tools

  1. Ensure that the ignition switch is at the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
  2. Start up the personal computer.
  3. Connect special tool MB991827 to special tool MB991824 and the personal computer.
  4. Connect special tool MB991910 to the special tool MB991824.
  5. Connect special tool MB991910 to the data link connector.
  6. Turn the power switch special tool MB991824 to the "ON" position. NOTE: When the special tool MB991824 is energized, the special tool MB991824 indicator light will be illuminated in a green color.
  7. Start the M.U.T.-III system on the personal computer. NOTE: Disconnect the scan tool MB991958 in the reverse order of the connecting sequence, making sure that the ignition switch is at the "LOCK" (OFF) position.

HOW TO READ AND ERASE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

  1. Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
  3. Select "System Select" from the start-up screen.
  4. Select "EPS" from "System List", and press the "OK" button.
  5. Select "Diagnostic Trouble Code." to read the DTC.
  6. If a DTC is set, it is shown.
  7. Choose "Erase DTCs" to erase the DTC.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE THE CAN BUS LINE

  1. Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connector.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
  3. Select "CAN bus diagnosis" from the start-up screen.
  4. When the vehicle information is displayed, confirm that it matches the vehicle being diagnosed. If they match, go to step 8 . If not, go to step 5.
  5. Select "view vehicle information" button.
  6. Enter the vehicle information and select the "OK" button.
  7. When the vehicle information is displayed, confirm again that it matches the vehicle which is being diagnosed. If they match, go to step 8. If not, go to step 5 .
  8. Press the "OK" button.
  9. When the optional equipment screen is displayed, choose the one which the vehicle is fitted with, and then select the "OK" button.

CHECK OF FREEZE FRAME DATA

The freeze frame data can be checked by using the scan tool ( HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION ).

When detecting fault and storing the DTC, the ECU connected to CAN bus line obtains the data before the determination of the DTC and the data when the DTC is determined, and then stores the ECU status of that time. By analyzing each data from scan tool, the troubleshooting can be performed more efficiently. The displayed items are as the table below.

CHECK OF ELECTRIC POWER STEERING WARNING DISPLAY

If the display does not operate, the electric power steering system or the combination meter may be defective. Check for diagnostic trouble code, and carry out diagnosis (Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART ). If no diagnostic trouble codes are set, carry out diagnosis by referring to the electric power steering warning display-related inspection items on the trouble symptom chart (Refer to TROUBLE SYMPTOM CHART ).

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART

CAUTIONDuring troubleshooting, a DTC associated with other system may be set when the ignition switch is turned on with connector(s) disconnected. On completion, check all systems for DTC(s). If DTC(s) are set, erase them all. If more than three minutes elapse after the ignition switch is turned ON without starting engine, the electric power steering-ECU may set DTCs U0100 and U0121 as past trouble.

Note. For electric power steering system the power supply may not shut off immediately after the ignition switch is turned "OFF".

CAUTIONIf there is any problem in the CAN bus lines, an incorrect DTC may be set. Prior to this diagnosis, diagnose the CAN bus lines (Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DIAGNOSIS ). Whenever ECU is replaced, ensure that the CAN bus lines are normal.

OPERATION

  1. Power is supplied to the torque sensor from the electric power steering-ECU.

FUNCTION

  1. The voltage based on the input torque is output to the electric power steering-ECU from the torque sensor main and sub for motor control.

Check Conditions

  1. With the torque sensor power supply ON, 5 V is supplied to the torque sensor.

Judgment Criterion

  1. The torque sensor main output voltage or the torque sensor sub output voltage is more than 4.7 V or less than 0.3 V.
  2. The torque sensor main output voltage or the torque sensor sub output voltage does not meet a predetermined voltage stored in the microcomputer, and the microcomputer determines that there is a problem in the torque sensor main system or the torque sensor sub system.

Fail Safe, Back Up Function

  1. The electric power steering-ECU stops the motor control and illuminates the electric power steering warning display, then sets the DTC C1510 and C1511.

PROBABLE CAUSES

  1. Malfunction of CAN bus line
  2. Defective torque sensor of the steering gear and linkage assembly
  3. Defective harness wire(s) or connector(s) Short or open circuit between the electric power steering-ECU and the torque sensor or loose connector contact
  4. Malfunction of the electric power steering-ECU

  1. STEP 1. Using scan tool MB991958, diagnose the CAN bus lines. Use scan tool to diagnose the CAN bus lines. Q: Is the check result normal? YES: Go to Step 3 . NO: Repair the CAN bus lines (Refer to «CAN BUS DIAGNOSTICS TABLE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/communication-devices/#controller-area-network-can-except-lancer-evolution__can-bus-diagnostics-table) ). On completion, go to Step 2.
  2. STEP 2. DTC recheck after resetting CAN bus lines Erase the DTC. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position. Check if the DTC is set. Q: Is DTC C1510 or C1511 set? YES: Go to Step 3. NO: This diagnosis is complete.
  3. STEP 3. Check the following connector. Check the connectors below for improper engagement, terminal damage or terminal drawn in the connector case. C-140 and C-141-1 electric power steering-ECU connector Torque sensor intermediate connector of the wiring harness for steering gear box & linkage assembly (connection and appearance checks only) Q: Is the connectors and terminals in good condition? YES: Go to Step 4. NO: Replace the steering gear and linkage assembly (Refer to «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX AND LINKAGE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ). Then go to Step 9 .
  4. STEP 4. Wiring harness check Check the wiring harness between the C-141-1 electric power steering-ECU connector terminal No. 26 and the torque sensor main for damage or other problem. Check the wiring harness between the C-141-1 electric power steering-ECU connector terminal No. 24 and the torque sensor sub for damage or other problem. Q: Is the wiring harness in good condition? YES: Go to Step 5. NO: Replace the steering gear and linkage assembly (Refer to «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX AND LINKAGE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ). Then go to Step 9 .
  5. STEP 5. Voltage measurement at the electric power steering-ECU connector The steering is in the neutral position. Measure the electric power steering-ECU voltage without disconnecting the connector (by backprobing). Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position. Measure the voltage between the C-141-1 electric power steering-ECU connector terminal No. 26 and the C-140 electric power steering-ECU connector terminal No. 12 (for main system). OK: 2.5 ± 0.05 V Measure the voltage between the C-141-1 electric power steering-ECU connector terminal No. 24 and the C-140 electric power steering-ECU connector terminal No. 12 (for sub system). OK: 2.5 ± 0.05 V Q: Is the check result normal? YES: Go to Step 6. NO: Replace the steering gear and linkage assembly (Refer to «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX AND LINKAGE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ). Then go to Step 9 .
  6. STEP 6. Using scan tool MB991958, check the data list The steering is in the neutral position. Check the following data list «DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution__data-list-reference-table) . Item No. 01: Torque sensor (main) Item No. 02: Torque sensor (sub) Q: Is the check result normal? YES: Go to Step 9 . NO: Go to Step 7.
  7. STEP 7. Check whether the DTC is reset. Erase the DTC. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position. Check if the DTC is set. Q: Is DTC C1510 or C1511 set? YES: Replace the steering gear and linkage assembly (Refer to «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX AND LINKAGE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ). Then go to Step 8. NO: Intermittent malfunction (Refer to How To Use Troubleshooting/ «HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTIONS»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/hoistjack/#general-information-except-lancer-evolution__how-to-cope-with-intermittent-malfunctions) ). Then go to Step 8.
  8. STEP 8. Check whether the DTC is reset. Erase the DTC. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position. Check if the DTC is set. Q: Is DTC C1510 or C1511 set? YES: Replace the electric power steering-ECU (Refer to «ELECTRIC POWER STEERING CONTROL UNIT»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ). Then go to Step 9. NO: Intermittent malfunction (Refer to How To Use Troubleshooting/ «HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/hoistjack/#general-information-except-lancer-evolution__how-to-cope-with-intermittent-malfunctions) ).
  9. STEP 9. Check whether the DTC is reset. Erase the DTC. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position. Check if the DTC is set. Q: Is DTC C1510 or C1511 set? YES: Return to Step 1 . NO: This diagnosis is complete.

DTC C1512: Torque sensor main/sub voltage

CAUTIONIf there is any problem in the CAN bus lines, an incorrect DTC may be set. Prior to this diagnosis, diagnose the CAN bus lines (Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DIAGNOSIS ). Whenever ECU is replaced, ensure that the CAN bus lines are normal.
  1. Power is supplied to the torque sensor from the electric power steering-ECU.
  1. The voltage based on the input torque is output to the electric power steering-ECU from the torque sensor main and torque sensor sub, and the sum of the torque sensor main output voltage and sub output voltage values are monitored for motor control.
  1. With the torque sensor power supply ON, 5 V is supplied to the torque sensor.
  1. The sum of the torque sensor main output voltage and sub output voltage is more than 5.375 V or less than 4.625 V.
  2. The sum of the torque sensor main output voltage and sub output voltage does not meet a predetermined value stored in the microcomputer, and the microcomputer determines that a problem has occurred in the mutual monitoring for the sensor main/sub systems.
  1. The electric power steering-ECU stops the motor control and illuminates the electric power steering warning display, then sets the DTC C1512.

  1. STEP 1. Using scan tool MB991958, diagnose the CAN bus lines. Use scan tool to diagnose the CAN bus lines. Q: Is the check result normal? YES: Go to Step 3 . NO: Repair the CAN bus lines (Refer to «CAN BUS DIAGNOSTICS TABLE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/communication-devices/#controller-area-network-can-except-lancer-evolution__can-bus-diagnostics-table) ). On completion, go to Step 2.
  2. STEP 2. DTC recheck after resetting CAN bus lines Erase the DTC. Turn the ignition switch from the "LOCK" (OFF) position to the "ON" position. Check if the DTC is set. Q: Is the DTC C1512 set? YES: Go to Step 3. NO: This diagnosis is complete.
  3. STEP 3. Check the following connector. Check the connectors below for improper engagement, terminal damage or terminal drawn in the connector case. C-140 and C-141-1 electric power steering-ECU connector Intermediate connector of the wiring harness for steering gear box & linkage assembly (connection and appearance checks only) Q: Is the connectors and terminals in good condition? YES: Go to Step 4. NO: Replace the steering gear and linkage assembly (Refer to «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX AND LINKAGE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ). Then go to Step 8 .
  4. STEP 4. Wiring harness check Check the wiring harness between the C-141-1 electric power steering-ECU connector terminal No. 26 and the torque sensor main for damage or other problem.   1. The engine speed signal sent to the EPS-ECU is 0 r/min.

STEERING WHEEL FREE PLAY CHECK

  1. With the engine running (hydraulic pressure applied), position the front wheel in the straight ahead position.
  2. Measure the side to side steering wheel play until the front wheels actually start moving while turning the steering wheel slightly in the left and right directions. Limit: 30 mm (1.2 inch) or less
  3. If the steering wheel free play exceeds the limit value, check the steering shaft joint or steering linkage for looseness, and replace or repair the faulty components if necessary.
  4. If the steering wheel free play is outside the standard value after Step 3 is performed, remove the steering gear and linkage (Refer to «POWER STEERING GEAR BOX AND LINKAGE»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ), and check and adjust the pinion total rotation torque (Refer to «STEERING GEAR TOTAL PINION TORQUE CHECK»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution__steering-gear-total-pinion-torque-check) ).

STEERING ANGLE CHECK

CAUTIONAfter adjusting the steering angle, always perform calibration to make ASC-ECU learn the neutral position of the steering wheel sensor (Refer to STEERING WHEEL SENSOR CALIBRATION ) < Vehicles with ASC >.

TIE-ROD LOOSENESS CHECK

When an abnormal noise is generated by the steering system, check the tie-rod for looseness. For the tie-rod looseness check, using a push-pull gauge and a spring scale, carry out the items below.

  1. Install a dial gauge.
  2. Check the points to load for a push-pull gauge and a spring scale.
  3. Operate to stabilize the load and fluctuation with a push-pull gauge and a spring scale.
  4. Carry out the dial gauge measurement and calculation with a push-pull gauge and a spring scale.

  1. Before the looseness check, check the items below. Check that the Mitsubishi genuine wheel with specified size is mounted. Also check that the wheel bearing is not loose. (Refer to «WHEEL BEARING END PLAY CHECK»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/axle-shafts/#front-axle-except-lancer-evolution__wheel-bearing-end-play-check) .) Raise the vehicle at the jack up point on the side sill of the inspection side, and lift the tire for approximately 30 mm (1.2 in). At this time, check that the tire of the opposite side is grounded.
  2. Install a dial-gauge respectively to the "Position a (front side position)" and "Position b (rear side position)" on the wheel rim, 25 mm (1.0 in) below from the wheel center. (Install the dial gauges to the smooth position that is around the edge of the tire.)
  3. The push-pull gauge shall be set to the smooth position that is 25 mm (1.0 in) above from the wheel center and the edge of the tire on the wheel rim. Then the position on the vehicle front side shall be the "Position A" and the vehicle rear side shall be the "Position B".
  4. To stabilize the relationship between the load and fluctuation, push with the specified load by wheel size in the order of "Position A", "Position B", and "Position A" using the push-pull gauge. Note that the pushed load on each position shall be extracted. LOAD SPECIFICATIONS WITH RESPECT TO WHEEL Wheel size Specified load 16 inches 120 N 18 inches 100 N
  5. Using the push-pull gauge, carry out the procedure below to read the value on the dial gauge and calculate the looseness. NOTE: The +/- sign acquired with the calculation result shall be used as it is. While pushing the "Position B" with the specified load by wheel size, read the values on the dial gauges at the "Position a" and "Position b". The values of the dial gauges at this time shall respectively be "aB" and "bB". LOAD SPECIFICATIONS WITH RESPECT TO WHEEL Wheel size Specified load 16 inches 120 N 18 inches 100 N Remove the load in the "Position B". Then while pushing the "Position A" with the specified load by wheel size, read the values on the dial gauge in the "Position a" and "Position b". The values on the dial gauges at this time shall respectively be "aA" and "bA". LOAD SPECIFICATIONS WITH RESPECT TO WHEEL Wheel size Specified load 16 inches 120 N 18 inches 100 N Make calculation taking the value differences of the dial gauge positions a and b which were read while pushing the "Position A" and "Position B" as each fluctuation. Fluctuation of the dial gauge position a: aA - aB Fluctuation of the dial gauge position b: bA - bB Calculate each fluctuation difference of the dial gauge positions a and b acquired above for looseness.   6. If the average exceeds the standard value, check the ball joint rotation torque.   1. Carry out the confirmation before the looseness check with the same manner as the check using a push-pull gauge.
  2. At the position that is 25 mm (1.0 in) above from the wheel center, bind the tire and the wheel rim with a cord for both the front and rear sides, and fix them with a tape not to loose vertically.
  3. Set the spring scale to the cord bound as above. At this time, the point to pull shall be in the dimension between the "Position C" and "Position D" by wheel size, and the position on the vehicle front side shall be the "Position C" and the vehicle rear side shall be the "Position D". BALL JOINT DUST COVER CHECK

  1. Using your fingers, press the dust cover to check for a crack or damage.
  2. If there are any cracks in the dust cover or it is damaged, replace the tie-rod end (Refer to «DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ). NOTE: If the dust cover has a crack or damage, the ball joint could be damaged.

TIE ROD END BALL JOINT ROTATION TORQUE CHECK

Required Special Tools

  1. MB990326: Preload Socket
  2. MB991897 or MB992011: Ball Joint Remover CAUTION: Loosen the jam nut (tie-rod end connection) from the ball joint, but do not remove here. Use the special tool. To prevent the special tool from dropping off, suspend it with a cord.

  1. Install special tool MB991897 or MB992011 as shown in the figure.
  2. Turn the bolt and knob to make the special tool jaws parallel, then hand-tighten the bolt. After tightening, check that the jaws are still parallel. NOTE: To adjust the special tool jaws to be parallel, set the orientation of the knob as shown in the figure.
  3. Unscrew the bolt to disconnect the ball joint.
  4. Move the ball joint stud several times and install the nut on the stud. Using the special tool MB990326, measure the ball joint rotation torque. Standard value: 2.9 N.m (26 in-lb) or less
  5. If the rotation torque exceeds the standard value, replace the tie rod end (Refer to «DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ).
  6. If the rotation torque is under the standard value, check the ball joint for end play or ratcheting. If no end play or ratcheting, the ball joint can be reused.
  7. Install the tie rod end to the knuckle, then tighten a new jam nut to the specified torque. Tightening torque: 52 ± 2 N.m (38 ± 1 ft-lb)

STATIONARY STEERING FORCE CHECK

The service procedure is the same as the vehicles with power steering (Refer to STATIONARY STEERING EFFORT CHECK ).

STEERING WHEEL RETURN TO CENTER CHECK

Scheme 49: STEERING WHEEL RETURN TO CENTER CHECK
  1. Make both gradual and sudden turns and check the steering wheel return.
  2. At a vehicle speed of approximately 22 mph (35 km/h), turn the steering wheel 90 degrees, hold a few seconds, then release. If the steering wheel then returns 70 degrees or more, the return can be judged satisfactory.

STEERING COLUMN SHAFT ASSEMBLY SHOCK ABSORBING MECHANISM CHECK

WARNINGIf the vehicle continues to be driven after the collision absorbing mechanism has operated, the steering column shaft may be damaged while it is in use. If there is a slack in the mounting base, do not attempt to repair it. Replace the steering column shaft assembly.

If a collision accident occurs or severe impact is applied on the steering wheel, the collision energy absorbing mechanism may have operated. Once the mechanism has operated, it will be inoperative even if it has suffered no apparent damage. Determine if the steering column shaft can be reused by the following procedure. If the collision energy absorbing mechanism has already operated, replace the steering shaft assembly (Refer to STEERING COLUMN SHAFT ASSEMBLY ). If any excessive radial free play on the steering wheel is found with the tilt lever in the lock position, always inspect the steering shaft assembly.

Scheme 50: Inspection procedure
  1. Remove the lower and upper column covers. CAUTION: After inspection, do not release the tilt lever until the steering shaft assembly has been installed.
  2. Ensure that the tilt lever is in the lock position.
  3. Loosen the two upper steering column mounting bolts by two turns.
  4. Hold the one-way capsules as shown in the figure, and then try to rock them. If there is a slack in either of the capsules, replace the steering column shaft assembly (Refer to «STEERING COLUMN SHAFT ASSEMBLY»(/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/x-2007-2016/remont/electronic-steering/#electrical-power-steering-except-lancer-evolution) ). Reference: The mounting base is fixed to the column bracket with the rivet. Before the collision energy absorbing mechanism operates, the column bracket is secured to the mounting base. After operation, the rivet will break off causing a slack. CAUTION: Be careful that nothing is pinched between the mounting base and the body. After inspection, do not release the tilt lever until the steering shaft assembly has been installed.
  5. After inspection, if there is no fault, tighten the two steering column upper side mounting bolts (2 bolts) to the specified torque. Tightening torque: 12 ± 3 N.m (106 ± 27 in-lb)

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

The removal and installation procedure is the same as the vehicles with power steering (Refer to STEERING WHEEL ).
