COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING

CAUTIONDO NOT use alcohol or methanol anti-freeze or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol anti-freeze. The use of an improper anti-freeze can cause corrosion of the aluminum components.
  1. Remove engine under cover.
  2. Using LLC Changer (MB991871), refill cooling system with appropriate mixture between 30-60% anti-freeze (depending on weather conditions). (Scheme 13) Typically a solution of 50% anti-freeze and 50% distilled water is sufficient for most areas. A solution of 50% anti-freeze and 50% water has a freezing point of -32.8°F (-31°C).
  3. Reinstall the radiator cap.
  4. Start the engine and let it warm up until the thermostat opens.
  5. After repeatedly revving the engine up to 3000 RPM several times, then shut off the engine.
  6. Remove the radiator cap after engine has become cold, completely fill the radiator with coolant. Reinstall the cap.
  7. Ensure coolant in the reserve tank is between the FULL and LOW marks. Add coolant if necessary.
  8. Install engine under cover.

Using Scan Tool (Frequency)

CAUTIONTo prevent damage, always turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position before connecting or disconnecting Scan Tool (MB991958).
  1. Connect Belt Tension Meter Set (MB991668) to Scan Tool (MB991958). (Scheme 14)
  2. Connect Scan Tool (MB991958) to the Data Link Connector (DLC). (Scheme 14)
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and select BELT TENSION MEASUREMENT from the menu screen on Scan Tool (MB991958).
  4. Hold Microphone (part of Belt Drive Meter Set) (MB991668) near the center of the drive belt between the pulleys, 0.40-0.78" (10-20 mm) away from the rear surface of the belt and perpendicular to the belt (no more than 15 degrees in either direction). (Scheme 15)
  5. Gently tap the middle of the belt between the pulleys with your finger, and check that the vibration frequency of the belt is 110-144 Hz.
  6. If vibration frequency is not within specification, replace the auto-tensioner and recheck tension.

Using Tension Gauge

CAUTIONCheck the drive belt tension after turning the crankshaft clockwise one turn or more.

Note. The drive belt tension adjustment is not necessary because an auto-tensioner is used.

  1. Make sure that the indicator mark is within the area "A." (Scheme 16) Use a belt tension gauge in the middle of the belt between the pulleys to measure that the belt tension is between 55-93 lbs. (245-412 N). (Scheme 17) If not within the specification, replace the auto-tensioner.

ADJUSTING DRIVE BELTS

CAUTIONCheck the drive belt tension after turning the crankshaft clockwise one turn or more.

Note. The drive belt tension adjustment is not necessary because an auto-tensioner is used.

Make sure that the indicator mark within area "A." (Scheme 16) If the mark is out of the area, replace the drive belt.
