Draining Mercury Villager II

Mechanical 1 illustration ~301 words
  1. Allow engine to cool and remove radiator cap. Raise and support vehicle. Remove engine splash shield.
  2. Position drain pan under radiator. Disconnect coolant return hose at oil cooler, if equipped. Open draincock at bottom of radiator. Drain radiator. Loosen radiator air relief plug 3 turns.
  3. Position drain pan under engine prior to removing engine block drain plugs. Remove engine block drain plugs. Remove coolant reservoir and drain. Clean reservoir and reinstall.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: Filling & Bleeding
  1. Ensure block drain plugs and radiator draincock are installed and tightened. Install a wire under radiator pressure cap negative pressure valve to allow flow of air and coolant regardless of pressure. (Scheme 1) Install radiator cap. Remove expansion tank hose from radiator neck. Remove engine air relief plug.
  2. Hang a one gallon modified coolant bottle above engine and connect tube from bottle to expansion tank hose port on radiator neck. Slowly allow 50/50 mix of coolant and water to flow from bottle to radiator filler neck, until coolant comes out engine air relief hole. When coolant starts to drip from engine air relief plug opening, close plug. Tighten plug to 20 ft. lbs. (26 N.m).
  3. Raise and support vehicle. Set heater controls to full WARM and blower switch to HIGH. Continue to fill radiator from modified bottle while running engine at 1500 RPM until cooling fan turns on. Stop coolant flow, turn off engine and allow to cool. Remove modified bottle.
  4. Connect expansion tank tube to filler neck. When engine has cooled, remove radiator cap. Remove wire from cap.
  5. Pour 50/50 mix of coolant into radiator until full. Install cap on radiator at this time. Add of coolant and water to MAX mark on coolant reservoir. Install radiator cap. NOTE: When adding more coolant, fill to bottom of overflow tube. Allow several minutes for air to escape.
