Scheme 1
The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a seventeen-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted on the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label.

The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier.

- 2MR - Ford Motor Company (Mercury) - Canada, multi-purpose vehicle
Scheme 4
The fourth VIN position identifies the brake type and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).
- D - Hydraulic brakes - 5,001-6,000 pounds (GVWR) - driver and front passenger air bags - driver and front passenger side impact air bags and canopies
- Z - Hydraulic brakes - 5,001F-6,000 pounds (GVWR) - driver and front passenger air bags

VIN positions five through seven indicate the vehicle line and series.

Scheme 6
The eighth VIN position is the engine type (displacement and number of cylinders).

Scheme 7
The ninth VIN position is a computer generated check digit.
Scheme 8
The tenth VIN position is the model year code.
- 5 - 2005

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.

Scheme 10
VIN positions twelve through seventeen are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.

Scheme 11
The vehicle (VC) label contains information on the manufacturer name, the month and year of manufacture, the certification statement and the VIN. This label also includes gross vehicle weight (GVW) information.

Exterior paint codes may be listed as a two-part code. The first set of characters listed indicate the vehicle primary body color. The second set of characters listed (if applicable) indicate a two-tone or accent body color. All codes are base coat/clear coat.
