Engine Cooling System: Removal & Installation Mercury Monterey VIII

Removal and Installation

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-234483) .
2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-234494-S34432732002006061000000) .
3. Disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
4. Loosen the block heater retaining screw. To install, tighten to 2 Nm (18 lb-in).
5. Remove the block heater.
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Clean and inspect the engine block mating surface before installing the block heater. Lubricate the block heater seal and the cylinder block hole with clean engine coolant to ease installation.
7. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-234494-S34432732002006061000000) .

2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-234493) .
3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing.
4. Remove the thermostat housing-to-engine bolts and the thermostat housing. Discard the gasket. To install, tighten the thermostat housing-to-engine bolts in 2 stages: Stage 1: Tighten the thermostat housing-to-engine bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.
5. Remove the thermostat.
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
7. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-234494-S34432732002006061000000) .

4. Remove the thermostat housing-to-engine bolts and the thermostat housing. Discard the gasket. To install, tighten the thermostat housing-to-engine bolts in 2 stages: Stage 1: Tighten the thermostat housing-to-engine bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. Disconnect the upper and lower hose clamps and remove the bypass hose.
3. Remove the bypass tube-to-intake bolt. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
4. Remove the bypass tube. Discard the O-ring seal.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new O-ring seal on the bypass tube and lubricate it with clean engine coolant.
6. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-234494-S34432732002006061000000) .

3. Remove the 2 cooling fan shroud-to-radiator bolts. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
4. Remove the cooling fan and shroud assembly.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
6. Install the radiator. For additional information, refer to «RADIATOR»(ref-234494-S35399121402006061000000) .

1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-234494-S34432732002006061000000) .
2. Remove the 2 bolts and the fender support brace. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
3. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir-to-degas bottle bolt. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
4. Position the power steering fluid reservoir aside.
5. Disconnect the air bleed hose from the degas bottle.
6. Disconnect the engine vent hose.
7. Disconnect the degas bottle return hose.
8. Remove the 2 degas bottle-to-fender bolts. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
9. Remove the degas bottle.
10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
11. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-234494-S34432732002006061000000) .
