Engine Ignition - 2.3L: Removal & Installation Mercury Mariner II

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1. Detach the 2 wire harness retainers from the ignition coil stud bolts.
2. Disconnect the 4 ignition coil electrical connectors.
3. Remove the 4 stud bolts and the ignition coils. To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
4. Inspect the coil boots for rips, nicks or tears. Remove and discard any damaged coil boots. To install, slide the new coil boot onto the coil until it is fully seated at the top of the coil.
5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots before attaching to the spark plugs.

REMOVAL

1. Detach the 2 wire harness retainers from the ignition coil stud bolts.
2. Disconnect the 4 ignition coil electrical connectors.
3. Remove the 4 stud bolts and the ignition coils.
4. Remove the 4 spark plugs.

Scheme 2

1. Inspect the spark plugs. Item Part Number Description 1 - Deposits bridging spark plug gap 2 - Wet black deposits (oil fouling) 3 - Dry black deposits (carbon fouling) 4 - Normal spark plug 5 - Pre-ignition 6 - Overheating 7 - Fused spot deposits
2. Adjust the spark plug gap as necessary.
3. Install the 4 spark plugs. Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
4. Install the 4 ignition coils and stud bolts. Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
5. Connect the 4 ignition coil electrical connectors.
6. Attach the 2 wire harness retainers to the ignition coil stud bolts.
