POWER TAKE OFF UNIT DRAINING AND FILLING

CAUTIONNew Power Take Off (PTO) unit lubricant must be installed any time the Power Take Off (PTO) unit has been submerged in water.

Note. The Power Take Off (PTO) unit is lubricated for life and is not to be checked unless a leak is suspected or a repair is necessary.

  1. Remove the drain plug and drain the Power Take Off (PTO) unit.
  2. Apply sealant to the drain plug threads and install the plug. CAUTION: Power take off (PTO) unit failure can result if the correct fill procedures are not followed. NOTE: The fluid level must be even with the bottom of the filler hole.
  3. Remove the fill plug and fill the Power Take Off (PTO) unit with SAE 75W-140 synthetic gear lubricant.
  4. Apply sealant to the fill plug and install the plug.

  1. Remove the driveshaft. Refer to «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-194643-S33182505722005092900000) .
  2. Remove the four bolts and the crossmember brace.
  3. Remove the two bolts and the two nuts.
  4. Remove the Power Take Off (PTO) unit.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-154598-S40263343402005062800000) .
  2. Remove the driveshaft. Refer to «DRIVESHAFT»(ref-194643-S33182505722005092900000) .
  3. Remove the four bolts and the crossmember brace.
  4. Remove the generator. Refer to «GENERATORS & REGULATORS»(ref-154598) article .
  5. Disconnect the RH catalyst monitor.
  6. Remove and discard the two nuts and separate the flexible Y-pipe from the manifold.
  7. Remove and discard the nuts. Discard the gasket.
  8. Remove and discard the nuts. Discard the gasket.
  9. Remove the flexible pipe. Disconnect the hanger.
  10. Remove the RH exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD - RH .
  11. Remove the bracket. Remove the five bolts. Loosen the bolt. Remove the bracket.
  12. Remove the three bolts. CAUTION: A new Power Take Off (PTO) unit driven gear seal must be installed anytime the Power Take Off (PTO) unit is removed. Refer to «POWER TAKE OFF UNIT DRIVEN GEAR SEAL»(ref-178585-S37113051282005061800000) .
  13. Remove the bolt and the Power Take Off (PTO) unit.

  1. Install the Power Take Off (PTO) unit.
  2. Install the two bolts and the two nuts.
  3. Install the crossmember brace and the four bolts.
  4. Install the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT .

CAUTIONA new Power Take Off (PTO) unit driven gear seal must be installed any time the Power Take Off (PTO) unit is removed. Refer to POWER TAKE OFF UNIT DRIVEN GEAR SEAL

Note. If necessary, replace the RH differential fluid seal. Refer to HALFSHAFT SEAL RH .

  1. Install the Power Take Off (PTO) unit. Install the bolts.
  2. Install the bolt.
  3. Install the bracket and the six bolts.
  4. Install the RH exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD - RH .
  5. Install the flex pipe and connect the hanger.
  6. Install the gasket and the nuts.
  7. Install the gasket and the nuts.
  8. Connect the flexible Y-pipe to the exhaust manifold and install the two nuts.
  9. Connect the RH catalyst monitor sensor.
  10. Install the generator. Refer to «GENERATORS & REGULATORS»(ref-154598) article .
  11. Install the crossmember brace and the four bolts.
  12. Check the Power Take Off (PTO) unit fluid level. Refer to «POWER TAKE OFF UNIT DRAINING AND FILLING»(ref-178585-S17244335112005061800000) .
  13. Install the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT .
  14. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-154598-S40263343402005062800000) .
  15. Check the transaxle fluid level Refer to TRANSAXLE FLUID DRAIN AND REFILL .

  1. Remove the companion flange. Refer to «POWER TAKE OFF UNIT REAR OUTPUT SHAFT FLANGE»(ref-178585-S24476275492005061800000) .
  2. Remove the Power Take Off (PTO) unit rear output shaft (pinion) seal.

Scheme 50: Installation
  1. Using the special tool, install the Power Take Off (PTO) unit rear output shaft (pinion) seal.
  2. Install the companion flange. Refer to «POWER TAKE OFF UNIT REAR OUTPUT SHAFT FLANGE»(ref-178585-S24476275492005061800000) .
  3. Fill the Power Take Off (PTO) unit. Refer to «POWER TAKE OFF UNIT DRAINING AND FILLING»(ref-178585-S17244335112005061800000) .
