KEY PROGRAMMING AFTER PCM REPLACEMENT

Note. This procedure is used to reprogram the PATS keys (two keys needed) after programming the PCM.

  1. Connect NGS Tester and turn key ON, Engine Off (KOEO).
  2. Select model year. If the model year is not displayed, use 2001.
  3. Select correct Tribute model in Vehicle Selection (YF is for 14 and AJ is for V6).
  4. Select Diagnostic Data Link and press Trigger.
  5. Select PCM and press Trigger.
  6. Select Function Test and press Trigger.
  7. Screen displays "Enter Security Access". It will take approximately 10 minutes at this point to gain access. Look at a clock or watch (since the screen does not count) and press Trigger.
  8. In 10 minutes, the screen will change. Select ignition Key Code Erase and press Trigger. Screen will display "Process has been completed" When finished.
  9. Turn Key OFF and disconnect NGS Tester.
  10. Initialize the first key by inserting into ignition and turning Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO) for at least 30 seconds and then turning Key OFF. Turn Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO) and verify that the PATS indicator in the instrument cluster illuminates and remains illuminated. Turn Key OFF and remove.
  11. Initialize the next key by inserting into ignition and turning Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO) for at least 3 seconds (with security light illuminating for 3 seconds and then going out) before turning Key OFF and removing.
  12. Confirm reprogram of keys by starting the engine with each key.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Note. When the PCM is replaced, the new PCM must be programmed with the old module's configuration information. Refer to POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) PROGRAMMING - NGS TESTER or POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) PROGRAMMING - WDS .

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) cover. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the nuts and the cover.
  3. Remove the PCM.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. Refer to «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -- 2.0L ZETEC»(ref-178496-S23282322882005061600000) or AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -3.0L DURATEC (4V) .
  2. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF/IAT) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the four nuts and the MAF/IAT sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -- 2.0L ZETEC»(ref-178496-S23282322882005061600000) .
  2. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube bracket bolts
  3. Remove the bolts and position the EGR aside.
  4. Remove bracket bolts.
  5. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt. Remove the sensor.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt. Remove the sensor.
  2. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt. Remove the sensor.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «LIFTING»(ref-178489-S02006613742005061600000) .
  2. Remove the bolts and the right front lower splash shield.
  3. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt. Remove the sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove the two screws and the TP sensor. CAUTION: Be sure to hand start the TP sensor screws. These are self-threading screws. Failure to hand start them can cause damage to the throttle body.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. Air cleaner outlet tube is removed for clarity.

  1. Remove the throttle position (TP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the screws. Remove the sensor.
  2. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the generator. Refer to «GENERATOR»(ref-154598-S29244319502003051900000) .
  2. Disconnect the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the CHT sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Partially drain the cooling system. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING & BLEEDING»(ref-178495-S33779620262005061600000) .
  2. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Unclip and remove the sensor.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) valve electrical connector.
  3. Remove the two bolts and the IAC valve. Discard the gasket.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new gasket.

  1. Remove the bolts and the exhaust manifold heat shield.
  2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector. NOTE: If necessary, lubricate the HO2S with Penetrating and Lock Lubricant to aid in removal.
  3. Using the special tool, remove the HO2S. NOTE: Apply a light coat of High Temperature Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant to the threads of the HO2S to aid in installation.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector. NOTE: If necessary, lubricate the HO2S with Penetrating and Lock Lubricant to aid in removal.
  3. Using the special tool, remove the HO2S. NOTE: Apply a light coat of High Temperature Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant to the threads of the HO2S to aid in installation.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «LIFTING»(ref-178489-S02006613742005061600000) . NOTE: If necessary, lubricate the catalyst monitor sensor with Penetrating and Lock Lubricant to aid in removal.
  3. Using the special tool, remove the catalyst monitor sensor. NOTE: Apply a light coat of High Temperature Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant to the threads of the catalyst monitor sensor to aid in installation.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the KS electrical connector and remove the connector from the mounting bracket.
  3. Remove the nut and the KS.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the clutch pedal position (CPP) electrical connector.
  2. Remove the CPP locknut and the switch.
  3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to «AIR CLEANER INTAKE PIPE -- 2.0L ZETEC»(ref-178496-S27259969962005061600000) .
  2. Disconnect the following electrical connectors: Cylinder Temperature Sensor Throttle Position Sensor Wiring Harness To Vehicle Idle Air Control Valve Camshaft Position Sensor Crankshaft Position Sensor Ignition Coil Radio Ignition Noise Suppressor Fuel Injectors NOTE: Remove and reinstall new tie straps if necessary.
  3. Disconnect the wiring harness to vehicle connectors from bracket and remove harness.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  2. Disconnect the coil-on-plug electrical connectors.
  3. Disconnect the radio ignition noise suppressor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the 16-pin electrical connectors.
  6. Disconnect power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector. NOTE: One connector is shown, the other five connectors are similar.
  7. Disconnect the six fuel injector electrical connectors and release the wiring harness locators from the fuel injection supply manifold.
  8. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  9. Remove the RH wheel and tire assembly.
  10. Remove the RH lower splash shield.
  11. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. NOTE: The oil pressure sensor is located behind the rear of the A/C compressor. The A/C compressor has been removed for clarity.
  12. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Remove the fuel charging wiring harness from the vehicle.
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
