Removal and Installation

Note. When the PCM is replaced, the new PCM must be programmed with the old module's configuration information. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) PROGRAMMING - WDS .

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) cover. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the nuts and the cover.
  3. Remove the PCM.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 2: MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR - 2.3L
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -- 2.3L»(ref-221822-S11174026902006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the four nuts and the MAF sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 3: MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR - 3.0L (4V)
CAUTIONThe mass air flow (MAF) sensor electronics module and body are calibrated as a unit and must be serviced as a unit. Do not tamper with the sensing elements located in the air flow bypass of the MAF body.

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -- 2.3L»(ref-221822-S11174026902006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF/IAT) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the four nuts and the MAF/IAT sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 6: CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR - 2.3L
  1. Disconnect the battery. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the CMP electrical connector.
  3. Remove the CMP bolt.
  4. Remove the CMP sensor.
  5. Remove the O-ring.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  2. Remove the CMP bolt.
  3. Remove the CMP sensor.
  4. Remove the O-ring.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist.
  3. Disconnect the CKP electrical connector.
  4. Remove the plug.
  5. Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt to position the number one cylinder at top dead center and install the special tool.
  6. Remove the CKP sensor bolts and the CKP sensor.

Installation

CAUTIONOnly hand tighten the bolt or damage to the front cover may occur.

  1. Install a 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) standard bolt. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
  2. Install the CKP sensor and connect the electrical connector.
  3. Adjust the CKP sensor alignment jig and tighten the CKP bolts to the specification.
  4. Remove the bolt.
  5. Remove the special tool.
  6. Install the plug.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the bolts and the right front lower splash shield.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  5. Remove the CKP sensor bolt.
  6. Remove the CKP sensor.
  7. Remove the CKP sensor O-ring.
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the two screws and the TP sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  3. Remove the TP sensor screws.
  4. Remove the TP sensor
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 24: CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE (CHT) SENSOR - 2.3L
  1. Remove the generator. See «GENERATOR»(ref-221834-S25486512672006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connector.
  3. Remove the CHT sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Partially drain the cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221821-S22848327452006022600000) .
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -- 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221824-S25313461482006022600000)
  3. Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the ECT sensor. Pull upward on the locking tab. Rotate the sensor counterclockwise and remove.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -- 2.3L»(ref-221822-S11174026902006022600000) .
  2. Remove the upper snow shield. Remove the upper snow shield-to-intake manifold screw. Remove the upper snow shield-to-intake manifold pin-type retainer.
  3. Remove the lower snow shield. Remove the lower snow shield-to-intake manifold screws (2 req'd).
  4. Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) valve electrical connector.
  5. Remove the two bolts and the IAC valve. Discard the gasket.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new gasket.

Scheme 29: IDLE AIR CONTROL (IAC) VALVE - 3.0L (4V)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  3. Remove the IAC valve bolts.
  4. Remove the IAC valve.
  5. Discard the IAC valve gasket.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new gasket.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist.
  3. Remove the bolts and the exhaust manifold heat shield.
  4. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.
  5. Using the special tool, remove the HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 32: HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) AND CATALYST MONITOR SENSOR - 3.0L (4V)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist.
  3. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.
  4. Using the special tool, remove the HO2S and the catalyst monitor sensor.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 33: KNOCK SENSOR (KS) - 2.3L
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the KS electrical connector and remove the connector from the mounting bracket.
  4. Remove the bolt and the KS.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  2. Disconnect the clutch pedal position (CPP) electrical connector.
  3. Remove the CPP locknut and the switch.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Scheme 37: FUEL CHARGING WIRING HARNESS - 3.0L (4V)
WARNINGDo not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  1. Remove the generator. See «GENERATOR»(ref-221834-S25486512672006022600000) .
  2. Remove the upper intake manifold. See «UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-221824-S38983032742006022600000) .
  3. Disconnect the two 16-pin electrical connectors.
  4. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the PSP sensor electrical connector.
  6. Disconnect the six fuel injector electrical connectors.
  7. Disconnect the six coil-on-plug electrical connectors.
  8. Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the radio interference capacitor electrical connector.
  10. Disconnect the CMP electrical connector.
  11. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  12. Disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  13. Detach the two wiring harness retainers.
  14. Detach the seven wiring harness retainers.
  15. Detach the three wiring harness retainers.
  16. Detach the two pin-type wiring harness retainers and remove the fuel charging wiring harness from the engine.
  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
