A/C DOES NOT TURN OFF DURING WIDE OPEN THROTTLE

  1. Check for A/C Clutch Relay (ACCR) malfunction (B2300, B3000 and B4000).
  2. Check for incorrect adjustment of TP sensor.
  3. Check for loose TP sensor.
  4. Check for Throttle Position (TP) sensor circuit malfunction.

A/C IS ALWAYS ON OR COMPRESSOR RUNS CONTINUOUSLY

  1. Stuck engagement.
  2. A/C pressure switch stuck closed.
  3. A/C relay is stuck closed.
  4. Short to ground between A/C switch and PCM.
  5. Short to ground between A/C relay and PCM.
  6. A/C relay to magnetic clutch circuit short to battery power.

CONSTANT VOLTAGE

Constant voltage malfunction.

CRANKS NORMALLY BUT WILL NOT START

  1. Check for Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor malfunction.
  2. Check for damaged sensor ring on crankshaft pulley.
  3. Check for disconnected harness connector.
  4. Check for EGR valve malfunction.
  5. Check for fuel injector malfunction.
  6. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  7. Check for fuel pump malfunction.
  8. Check for fuel pump cut-off switch malfunction (B2300, B3000, B4000 and Tribute).
  9. Check for fuel system leaks.
  10. Check for Idle Air Control (IAC) valve malfunction.
  11. Check for ignition coil malfunction.
  12. Check for incorrect gap between CKP sensor and crankshaft pulley.
  13. Check for incorrect ignition timing due to Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor malfunction or damaged crankshaft pulley.
  14. Check for incorrect valve timing.
  15. Check for intake air system leak.
  16. Check for low engine compression.
  17. Check for main relay malfunction.
  18. Check for operation of immobilizer system.
  19. Check for overheating engine.
  20. Check for PCV valve malfunction.
  21. Check for poor fuel quality.
  22. Check for poor ground connection.
  23. Check for Pressure Regulator Control (PRC) system malfunction.
  24. Check for purge solenoid valve malfunction.

  5. Check for cooling system malfunction.
  6. Check for damaged trigger wheel on camshaft.
  7. Check for EGR system malfunction.

  9. Check for fuel pulsation damper malfunction.
  10. Check for fuel pump malfunction.
  11. Check for fuel saturated charcoal canister.
  12. Check for fuel tank ventilation system malfunction.

  1. Check for A/C relay circuit malfunction.
  2. Check for automatic transaxle or transmission malfunction.
  3. Check for Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor malfunction.
  4. Check for condenser fan circuit malfunction.
  5. Check for Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor malfunction.
  6. Check for cruise control system malfunction.

  4. Check for damaged sensor ring on crankshaft pulley.
  5. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

EXHAUST SMOKE

  1. Check for cooling system malfunction (cylinder head or intake manifold gasket leak).
  2. Check for fuel injector malfunction.
  3. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  4. Check for fuel pulsation damper malfunction.
  5. Check for fuel pump malfunction.
  6. Check for intake air system leak.
  7. Check for restricted air filter.
  8. Check for spark plug malfunction.
  9. Check for spark plug wire malfunction.
  10. Check for PCV system malfunction.
  11. Check for restricted or plugged fuel lines.
  12. Check for worn engine parts.

EXHAUST SULPHUR (ROTTEN EGG) SMELL

Note. Slight sulphur smell may be normal. Catalyst with between 5000 and 10,000 miles or less (new vehicles or recently replaced catalyst) are likely to have sulphur smell due to highly active state of new catalyst.

  1. Check for charcoal canister malfunction (fuel saturated).
  2. Check for disconnected harness connectors.
  3. Check for disconnected or incorrect connection of vacuum lines.
  4. Check for incorrect fuel pressure.
  5. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  6. Check for fuel pulsation damper malfunction.
  7. Check for fuel pump malfunction.
  8. Check for fuel tank vent malfunction.

FAST IDLE OR RUN-ON

  1. Check for Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor malfunction.
  2. Check for inoperative air charging pressure control system (Millenia 2.3L).
  3. Check for intake air system leak.
  4. Check for mis-adjusted air adjusting screw.
  5. Check for misadjusted or binding cruise control cable.
  6. Check for misadjusted throttle cable.
  7. Check for throttle body malfunction.
  8. Check for Throttle Position (TP) sensor malfunction.
  9. Check for Throttle Position (TP) sensor mis-adjustment.
  10. Check for vacuum leak at intake manifold.

FUEL ODOR IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT

  1. Check for charcoal canister malfunction (fuel saturation).
  2. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  3. Check for fuel pump control relay and resistor malfunction (Millenia 2.3L).
  4. Check for fuel pump malfunction (always on).
  5. Check for fuel system leaks (fuel injector, fuel pulsation damper or fuel lines).
  6. Check for fuel tank vent system blockage.
  7. Check for purge solenoid malfunction.

HARD TO START (LONG CRANKING, ERRATIC CRANKING OR ERRATIC STARTING)

  1. Check for battery or starter malfunction
  2. Check for Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor malfunction.
  3. Check for Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor malfunction.
  4. Check for damaged sensor ring on crankshaft pulley.
  5. Check for EGR system malfunction.
  6. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  7. Check for fuel pump malfunction.
  8. Check for Idle Air Control (IAC) valve malfunction.
  9. Check for incorrect gap between CKP sensor and crankshaft pulley.
  10. Check for intake air system leak.
  11. Check for Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor circuit malfunction.
  12. Check for open in START signal circuit (Millenia).
  13. Check for operation of immobilizer system.
  14. Check for PCV valve malfunction.
  15. Check for poor fuel quality.
  16. Check for Pressure Regulator Control (PRC) system malfunction.
  17. Check for purge solenoid valve malfunction.
  18. Check for restricted air filter.
  19. Check for restricted exhaust system.
  20. Check for restricted fuel filter or fuel inlet sock.
  21. Check for restricted or plugged fuel lines.
  22. Check for spark plug malfunction.

KNOCKING OR PINGING DURING ACCELERATION OR CRUISE

  1. Check for cooling system malfunction (overheating).
  2. Check for Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor malfunction (B2300 and Tribute 2.0L).
  3. Check for Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor malfunction.
  4. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  5. Check for fuel pulsation damper malfunction.
  6. Check for fuel pump malfunction.
  7. Check for incorrect engine compression.
  8. Check for Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor malfunction.
  9. Check for Knock Sensor (KS) malfunction.
  10. Check for Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor circuit malfunction.
  11. Check ignition timing.

LACK OR LOSS OF POWER DURING ACCELERATION OR CRUISE

  1. Check for A/C condenser fan circuit malfunction.
  2. Check for A/C relay circuit malfunction.
  3. Check for automatic transaxle or transmission malfunction.
  4. Check for Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor malfunction.
  5. Check for cooling fan circuit malfunction.
  6. Check for Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor malfunction.
  7. Check for damaged sensor ring on crankshaft pulley.
  8. Check for dragging brakes.
  9. Check for EGR valve malfunction.
  10. Check for fuel injector malfunction.

LOW IDLE OR ENGINE STALLS DURING DECELERATION

  1. Check for A/C Clutch Switch (ACCS) malfunction.
  2. Check for brake switch circuit malfunction.
  3. Check for Idle Air Control (IAC) valve malfunction.
  4. Check for intake air system leak.
  5. Check for Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor circuit malfunction.
  6. Check for neutral or clutch switch (M/T) circuit malfunction.
  7. Check for purge solenoid valve malfunction.
  8. Check for Throttle Position (TP) sensor circuit malfunction.
  9. Check for vacuum leak.

POOR FUEL ECONOMY

  1. Check for A/C condenser fan circuit malfunction.
  2. Check for Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor malfunction.
  3. Check for cooling fan circuit malfunction.
  4. Check for damaged trigger wheel on camshaft.
  5. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
  6. Check for dragging brakes.
  7. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  8. Check for fuel pulsation damper malfunction.
  9. Check for fuel pump malfunction.
  10. Check for fuel quality.
  11. Check for incorrect engine compression.
  12. Check for incorrect tire pressure (low).

  26. Check for Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system malfunction.
  27. Check for weak spark from ignition system.

ROUGH OR UNSTABLE IDLE

  1. Check for A/C compressor continuous operation (always on).
  2. Check for A/C condenser fan circuit malfunction.
  3. Check for A/C relay circuit malfunction.
  4. Check for air charging pressure control system malfunction (Millenia 2.3L).
  5. Check for Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor malfunction.
  6. Check for Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor malfunction.
  7. Check for damaged sensor ring on crankshaft pulley.
  8. Check for damaged sensor wheel on camshaft.
  9. Check for EGR system malfunction.
  10. Check for fuel injector malfunction.
  11. Check for Pressure Regulator Control (PRC) system malfunction.
  12. Check for fuel pressure regulator malfunction.
  13. Check for fuel pulsation damper malfunction.
  14. Check for fuel pump malfunction.
  15. Check for Idle Air Control (IAC) valve malfunction.
  16. Check for incorrect A/C refrigerant charge.
  17. Check for intake air system leak.
  18. Check for incorrect gap between CKP sensor and crankshaft pulley.
  19. Check for incorrect ignition timing due to Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor malfunction or damaged crankshaft pulley.
  20. Check for incorrect valve timing.
  21. Check for low engine compression.
  22. Check for overheating engine.
  23. Check for PCV valve malfunction.
  24. Check for poor fuel quality.
  25. Check for Power Steering Pressure (PSP) switch circuit malfunction.
  26. Check for purge solenoid valve malfunction.
  27. Check for restricted exhaust system.
  28. Check for restricted fuel filter or fuel inlet sock.
  29. Check for restricted or plugged fuel lines.
  30. Check for spark plug malfunction.
  31. Check for spark plug wire malfunction.
  32. Check for Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system malfunction.

SLOW RETURN TO IDLE

  1. Check for Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor malfunction.
  2. Check for intake air system leak.
  3. Check for thermostat malfunction (stuck open).
  4. Check for throttle body malfunction.
  5. Check for throttle linkage malfunction.
  6. Check for vacuum leaks.

WILL NOT CRANK

  1. Check for A/T range switch circuit malfunction.
  2. Check for charging system malfunction.
  3. Check for burned fuse.
  4. Check for hydro-locked engine.
  5. Check for low battery charge.
  6. Check for main relay malfunction.
  7. Check for misadjusted A/T range switch.
  8. Check for open circuit between ignition switch and starter.
  9. Check for poor ground connection.
  10. Check for seized drive plate (A/T) or flywheel (M/T).
  11. Check for starter cut relay stuck open.
  12. Check for starter interlock switch malfunction (M/T) .
  13. Check for starter malfunction.
  14. Check for theft deterrent system malfunction.
  15. Ensure clutch is fully depressed (M/T).
  16. Ensure transaxle or transmission is in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T).

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce conditions creating an intermittent fault, use the following methods

  1. Lightly tap on or vibrate component.
  2. Wiggle, pull, shake or bend wiring harness.
  3. Using spray bottle, mist component with water.
  4. Remove/apply vacuum source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit. Check for loose terminals or connections.
