COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING
| WARNING | To avoid personal injury, do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap while engine is operating or hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury. |
| CAUTION | The coolant must be recovered in a suitable, clean container for reuse. If the coolant is contaminated it must be recycled or disposed of correctly. |
Note. About 80% of coolant capacity can be recovered with the engine in the vehicle. Dirty, rusty or contaminated coolant requires replacement.
Scheme 15
- Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one half turn counterclockwise. When the pressure is released, remove the pressure relief cap.
- Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. Open the draincock and allow to drain. Close the radiator draincock when finished.
| CAUTION | The cooling system is filled with either green-colored or yellow-colored Mazda Premium Engine Coolant meeting Mazda Specifications. To determine the vehicle's coolant type (color), check the coolant reservoir. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system and maintain the warranty on the cooling system |
- Add Mazda Premium Engine Coolant of the type of coolant originally equipped in the vehicle. If you are unsure which type of coolant the vehicle requires, check the coolant reservoir.
- Do not add/mix an orange-colored, extended life coolant such as Mazda Specialty Orange Engine Coolant, meeting Mazda specifications with factory-filled coolant. Mixing Mazda Specialty Orange Engine Coolant or any orange-colored extended life product with the factory filled coolant can result in degraded corrosion protection.
- A large amount of water without engine coolant may be added, in case of an emergency. In this instance, the cooling system must be drained and refilled with a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and distilled water as soon as possible. Water alone (without engine coolant) can cause engine damage from corrosion, overheating or freezing.
- Do not use alcohol, methanol or brine or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze (coolant). Alcohol and other liquids can cause engine damage from overheating of freezing.
- Do not add extra inhibitors of additives to the coolant. these can be harmful and compromise the corrosion protection of the engine coolant.
- Do not mix with recycled coolant unless from a Mazda-approved recycling process. (See Use of Recycled Engine Coolant section of the owners manual.
- Add the correct engine coolant mixture to the Gades bottle until the coolant level is between the "COOLANT FILL LEVEL" marks.
- Select the maximum heater temperature and blower motor speed settings. Position the control to discharge air at vents in instrument panel.
- Start the engine and allow to idle. While engine is idling, feel for hot air at vents. CAUTION: If air discharge remains cool and engine coolant temperature gauge does not move, engine coolant level is low in engine and must be filled. Stop engine, allow to cool and fill cooling system.
- Start engine and allow to idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Hot air should discharge from vents. The engine coolant temperature gauge should maintain a stabilized reading in the middle of the NORMAL range and the upper radiator hose should feel hot to the touch.
- Shut the engine off and allow to cool.
- Check the engine for coolant leaks.
- Check the engine coolant level in Gades bottle and fill as necessary.
COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING
- Drain the cooling system. refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-194631-S05090087632005092900000) .
- Remove the water thermostat. Refer to «THERMOSTAT - 2.0L ZETEC»(ref-194631-S41852951682005092900000) .
- Install the water hose connection without the water thermostat. NOTE: Refer to the Pro Flush and FILL, Coolant Flush and Fill operating instructions for specific vehicle hook-up.
- Using the special tools, flush the engine and radiator.
- Use premium cooling system flush.
- Install the water thermostat.
- Backflush the heater core if necessary.
- Fill the cooling system. refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-194631-S05090087632005092900000) .

- Remove the degas bottle.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Raise and support the vehicle. .
- Remove the lower splash shields.
- Disconnect the lower radiator hose and the degas return hose.
- Remove the lower center support bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Disconnect the remaining coolant hose connections.
- Position the hood latch assemble out of the way. .
- Remove the two bolts and the center support.
- Remove the two top bolts retaining the cooling fan to the radiator.
- Remove the upper radiator support brackets, and remove the radiator from the vehicle.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Remove the three bolts and separate the water outlet adapter from the thermostat housing. NOTE: The thermostat is indexed and must be installed correctly.
- Remove the thermostat and the O-ring seal. NOTE: Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Remove the right front tire assembly.
- Remove the splash shield.

- Remove the water pump pulley.
- Remove the four bolts and the water pump. NOTE: Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. .
- Position the hood latch out of the way. .
- If equipped, remove the upper radiator tie strap.
- Raise and support the vehicle. .
- Remove the lower center support bolt and the lower fan bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the upper center support bolt and the upper center support.
- Disconnect the LH fan electrical connector.
- If equipped, disconnect the cooling fan resistor and the cooling fan relay electrical connectors.
- Remove the LH and RH upper radiator supports.
- Tilt the radiator forward for clearance.
- Remove the five bolts and the LH cooling fan.
- If necessary remove the bolt and disconnect the electrical connector, remove the RH fan.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Use a slide hammer or tools suitable to remove the cylinder block core plug.
- Inspect the cylinder block plug bore for any damage that would interfere with the correct sealing of the plug. If the cylinder block plug bore is damaged, bore for the next oversize plug. NOTE: Oversize plugs are identified by the OS stamped in the flat located on the cup side of the plug.
- Coat the cylinder block core plug and bore lightly with Threadlock 262 and install the cylinder block core plug. Cup-Type CAUTION: Use care during this procedure so as not to disturb or distort the cup sealing surface. CAUTION: When installed, the flanged edge must be below the chamfered edge of the bore to effectively seal the bore.
- Use a tool suitable to seat the cup-type cylinder block core plug. Expansion-Type CAUTION: Do not contact the crown when installing an expansion-type cylinder block core plug. This could expand the plug before seating and result in leakage. Use tool suitable to seat the expansion-type cylinder block core plug.

- Drain the cooling system. refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-194631-S05090087632005092900000) .
- Raise the vehicle. .
- Disconnect the block heater power cable from the block heater. CAUTION: Do not loosen the block heater retaining screw more than necessary for removal.
- Remove the block heater. CAUTION: Make sure the power cable is routed and secured away from rotating or hot components or damage to the cable may occur.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
