Fuel Pump - Electric Mazda RX-7 FC

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Electric fuel pump is mounted in fuel tank. Power is supplied when ignition switch is in "RUN" position. This circuit is protected by a 20-amp fuse at fuse panel. In-line fuel filter must be changed within recommended mileage interval before performing tests. If in doubt, install new filter.

Pressure Test (B2200 & B2600)

Turn ignition off. Disconnect main fuel hose and connect a fuel pressure gauge to it. Connect "B" and "D" terminals of the fuel pump control unit with a jumper wire. (Scheme 55) Turn igntion switch on and check fuel pressure. Pressure should be 2.8-3.6 psi (.20-.25 kg/cm 2 ). If not replace fuel pump.

Pressure Test (All Others)

  1. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery. Disconnect main fuel hose from fuel pipe. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to fuel filter end. NOTE: Cover the hose with waste cloth since fuel is splashed out when disconnecting the hose.
  2. Reconnect battery negative terminal. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. Using jumper wire, connect wire between Green/White and Black wire terminals of pump connector to start pump. (Scheme 56) Measure fuel pressure. Outlet pressure should be 64.0-85.3 psi (4.5-6.0 kg/cm 2 ).

All Models except B2200 and B2600 Pressure Regulator

  1. Disconnect battery negative terminal. Disconnect main fuel hose from fuel pipe. Connect pressure gauge between fuel main hose and pipe using a 3-way joint. NOTE: Cover hose with waste cloth since fuel is splashed out when disconnecting the hose.
  2. Connect battery negative terminal, and start engine. Disconnect vacuum hose connected to pressure regulator at pressure regulator control valve. Measure fuel pressure at idle. Pressure should be 35.6-37.0 psi (2.5-2.6 kg/cm 2 ). Connect vacuum hose as it was, and measure fuel pressure. Pressure should be 28.4 psi (2.0 kg/cm 2 ).
  3. If pressure is less than specified, check for bent or kinked fuel supply line, plugged fuel filter, plugged or bad fuel injectors, leaking pressure regulator and/or inoperative fuel pump.
  4. If pressure exceeds specification, check for kinked, bent or plugged fuel return line and/or defective pressure regulator.

Fuel Pump (B2200 & B2600)

Turn ignition off. Disconnect main fuel hose and insert end into a measuring beaker. Connect "B" and "D" terminals of fuel pump control unit with a jumper wire. Turn ignition switch on, and measure amount of fuel pumped while running engine for one minute. Volume should be 40 ounces (1150 cc). If not replace fuel pump.

Injector (All Others)

  1. Connect a vinyl hose to fuel injector and place hose into container. Connect Injector Checker (49-9200-040) on RX7, 323 and (49-B092-953) on 626.
  2. Using a jumper wire, connect terminals of fuel pump check connector. Turn ignition on for 15 seconds, measure injection volume. Volume should be 3.8-4.0 ounces (111-118 cc) on RX7, 1.1-1.4 ounces (32-41 cc) on 323, and 1.3-1.8 ounces (38-53 cc) on 626.

Removal & Installation (B2200 & B2600)

Remove fuel tank. Remove fuel gauge and fuel pump assembly from tank. Remove wires. Remove fuel pump from bracket. Disconnect fuel hose. Replace fuel pump. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation (All Others)

On RX7, remove rear floor mat and disconnect fuel pump connector. Raise and support vehicle. Remove fuel pump cover. Disconnect inlet and outlet hoses from pump. Remove fuel pump screws. Remove fuel pump. To install, reverse removal procedure.

On 323, 626, remove rear seat cushion and filler cap. Disconnect fuel pump connector. Raise and support vehicle. Remove fuel pump cover. Disconnect inlet and outlet hoses from pump. Remove fuel pump and bracket. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal & Installation

Disconnect vacuum hose. Disconnect return and main fuel hoses. Remove pressure regulator. To install, reverse removal procedure and check for fuel leaks.
