GENERATOR BELT

Note. If the belt is replaced with a new one or the belt has been on a running engine for less than 5 minutes, adjust deflection or tension to NEW specification. If the belt has been on a running engine for more than 5 minutes, adjust deflection or tension to USED specification.

Belt Deflection

Inspect the drive belt deflection when the engine is cold, or at least 30 minutes after the engine has stopped. Apply moderate pressure, 22 lbs. (98 N), midway between the specified pulleys. (Scheme 6) If the deflection is not within specification, adjust as necessary. See SPECIFICATIONS under SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING article in SPECIFICATIONS INDEX. See GENERATOR BELT ADJUSTMENT.

Belt Tension

Note. Belt tension can be inspected in place of belt deflection. Inspect the drive belt tension when the engine is cold, or at least 30 minutes after the engine has been stopped.

Using Belt Tension Gauge (49 9200 020A), or equivalent, inspect the belt tension between any two pulleys. (Scheme 7) If tension is not within specification, adjust as necessary. See GENERATOR BELT ADJUSTMENT.

BATTERY

Inspect the battery in the following procedure

  1. Measure open circuit voltage of battery. If battery voltage is more than 12.4 volts, go to step 3 . If battery voltage is less than 12.4 volts, go to next step.
  2. Quick charge for 30 minutes and recheck voltage. If battery voltage is more than 12.4 volts, go to next step. If battery voltage is less than 12.4 volts, replace battery.
  3. Apply load test to battery using a battery load tester and record battery voltage after 15 seconds. See «LOAD TEST SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-167276-S07095078272004101200000) and «LOAD TEST MINIMUM VOLTAGE»(ref-167276-S17490109952004101200000) tables. If voltage is more than specified, battery is okay. If voltage is less than specified, replace battery.

BACK-UP CURRENT

  1. Verify that the ignition switch is off and that the ignition key has been removed.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Measure the back-up current between the negative battery terminal and the negative battery cable.
  4. If the current exceeds the maximum (20 mA), remove the fuses in the main fuse block and the fuse block one by one while measuring the back-up current.
  5. Inspect and repair harnesses and connectors of the fuse at which the current reduces.

BATTERY RECHARGING

WARNINGHydrogen gas is produced during normal battery operation. A battery-related explosion can cause serious injury. Keep all flames (including cigarettes), heat, and sparks away from the top and surrounding area of open battery cells.
CAUTIONWhen disconnecting the battery, remove the negative cable first and install it last to prevent damage to electrical components or the battery. To prevent damage to electrical components or the battery, turn all accessories off and stop the engine before performing maintenance or recharging the battery. Do not quick charge for over 30 minutes. It will damage the battery.
  1. Place a battery in a pan of water to prevent it from overheating. The water level should come up about halfway on the battery. Keep water off the top of the battery.
  2. Connect a battery charger to the battery.
  3. Adjust the charging current as specified. See «BATTERY CHARGING SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-167276-S37165779752004101200000) table.
  4. After the battery has been recharged, measure the battery positive voltage and verify that the battery above 12.4 volts for more than one hour. If not as specified, replace the battery.

GENERATOR VOLTAGE

CAUTIONTo avoid damage to the internal parts (power transistor) of the generator, do NOT apply direct battery positive voltage to the generator terminal "D".

Note. Prior to performing generator testing, turn OFF all electrical components. Place transmission in Neutral and apply parking brake.

  1. Verify that the battery is fully charged.
  2. Verify that the drive belt deflection/tension is correct. See «BELT TENSION»(ref-167276-S04207916302004101200000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  3. Turn off all electrical loads.
  4. Start the engine and verify that the generator rotates smoothly without any noise while the engine is running.
  5. Using DVOM, measure the battery voltage at the battery and by backprobing at generator harness connector terminals "D" and "P". See «GENERATOR OUTPUT»(ref-167276-S11952494492004101200000). (Scheme 8)

  1. Verify that the battery is fully charged.
  2. Verify that the drive belt deflection/tension is correct. See «BELT TENSION»(ref-167276-S04207916302004101200000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Connect a tester capable of reading 120 amps or more, between generator terminal "B" and the wiring harness connector.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Turn off all electrical loads.
  7. Start the engine. Increase engine speed to 2000-2500 RPM.
  8. Turn headlights (high-beam), blower motor (high), rear window defroster and brake lights on and verify that the current reading increases. If generator terminal "B" current does not increase, repair or replace the generator if necessary.
