FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER AND SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | Performing the following procedures without first removing the ABS wheel-speed sensor may possibly cause an open circuit in the harness if it is pulled by mistake. Before performing the following procedures, remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor (axle side) and fix it to an appropriate place where the sensor will not be pulled by mistake while servicing the vehicle. |
- Remove in the order indicated in the table.
- Install in the reverse order of removal.
- Inspect the front wheel alignment. If not as specified, adjust the front wheel alignment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-163681-S25516364612004070900000) .

PISTON ROD NUT REMOVAL NOTE
- Protect the coil spring using a piece of cloth, then set the SSTs .
- Compress the coil spring using the SSTs, and remove the piston rod nut.
| WARNING | Removing the piston rod nut is dangerous. The shock absorber and spring could fly off under tremendous pressure and cause serious injury or death. Secure the shock absorber in the SSTs before removing the coil spring nut. |

BOUND STOPPER INSTALLATION NOTE
Apply grease to the contact surface between the bound stopper and the dust boot.
DUST BOOT INSTALLATION NOTE
Apply grease to the contact surface between the dust boot and the upper spring seat.

- Temporarily install the coil spring, upper spring seat rubber and upper spring seat on the shock absorber so that the lower end of the coil spring is seated on the step of the lower spring seat.
- Mark the coil spring, upper spring seat rubber and upper spring seat for proper installation as shown in the figure.
- Align the marks of the coil spring, upper spring seat rubber and upper spring seat. Protect the coil spring and upper seat spring using a piece of cloth, then set the SSTs.
- Compress the coil spring using the SSTs.
- Install the lower spring seat rubber on the lower spring seat.
- Install the shock absorber so that the lower end of the coil spring is seated on the step of the lower spring seat.
- Make sure that the marks on the shock absorber and upper spring seat are aligned.
- Install the bearing, mounting rubber, and piston rod nut. Piston rod nut tightening torque 65.80-93.96 ft. lbs (89.2-127.4 N.m).
FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER AND SPRING INSTALLATION NOTE
Note. Face the mounting block direction indicator toward the rear outboard position, and install the shock absorber.

STIFFENER INSTALLATION NOTE
Install the stiffener so that F mark faces front of vehicle.

DUST BOOT REMOVAL NOTE
Remove the dust boot using a chisel, being careful not to damage the ball joint and the arm.

LOWER ARM BUSHING (FRONT) REMOVAL NOTE
- Cut away the projecting rubber of the lower arm bushing.
- Set the SST onto the lower arm, and remove the bushing.

- Mark the lower arm as shown in the figure by aligning with the small projection of the lower arm bushing (rear) for proper installation.
- Remove the lower arm bushing using the SSTs and a press.
LOWER ARM BUSHING (REAR) INSTALLATION NOTE
- Align the mark of the lower arm and the small projection of the lower arm bushing (rear) as shown in the figure. (Scheme 17)
- Set the lower arm onto the SST (49 L034 201).
- Press the new lower arm bushing using the SST (49 L034 202). (Scheme 18)
LOWER ARM BUSHING (FRONT) INSTALLATION NOTE
Install a new bushing, and pull it into the lower arm using the SST. (Scheme 16)
Scheme 19
- Wipe the grease off the ball joint.
- Fill the inside of the new dust boot with grease.
- Press the dust boot onto the ball joint using the SST.
- Wipe away the excess grease.
FRONT CROSSMEMBER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
- Remove the front exhaust pipe.
- Remove the engine mount member. See «ENGINE MOUNT MEMBER REMOVAL NOTE»(ref-169486-S04879097722004121300000) .
- Remove the steering gear and linkage. See «STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-169486-S06617009982004120900000) .
- Remove the front lower arm. See «FRONT LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-169486-S35539242162004120900000) .
- Remove in the order indicated in the table.
- Install in the reverse order of removal.
- Inspect the front wheel alignment if necessary.
CROSSMEMBER COMPONENT REMOVAL NOTE
- Support the crossmember using a jack and remove the bolts and nuts.
- Remove the crossmember component.
STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

BOLT (INTERMEDIATE SHAFT) REMOVAL NOTE
Mark the pinion shaft and gear housing for proper installation.

TIE-ROD END BALL JOINT REMOVAL NOTE
- Remove the tie rod nut.
- Separate the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle using the SSTs.

- Remove the wiper motor and link. See WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
- Suspend the engine using the SSTs.
- Remove the No.2 engine mount nut A.

STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE INSTALLATION NOTE
- Loosely tighten nuts 3, 4 and bolt 2.
- Tighten the mounting bracket nuts and bolts to the specified torque in the order shown.
- Tighten the crossmember nuts. Tightening torque 68.67-96.84 ft. lbs. (93.1-131.3 N.m).

- Position the direction indicator on engine mount member bushings facing toward the front side, and install the bushings onto the engine mount member.
- To install the engine mount member, put the No.2 engine mount stud bolts through the engine mount member installation holes.
- Install the engine mount member bolts A and nuts A. Tightening torque A: 47-65 ft. lbs. (64-89 N.m).
- Loosely tighten the No.2 engine mount nuts B and C.
- Remove the SSTs (engine support).
- Tighten the No.2 engine mount nuts B and C. Tightening torque B: 50-68 ft. lbs. (67-93 N.m); C: 63-85 ft. lbs. (85-116 N.m).
BOLT (INTERMEDIATE SHAFT) INSTALLATION NOTE
Align the marks and install the intermediate shaft and bolt.
