REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING. |
See CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT .
Remove passenger side lower instrument panel cover. Disconnect blower motor harness connector. Remove air hose. Remove 3 hex screws and blower motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Tilt steering column downward. Remove instrument panel cluster screw cover and panel light control switch. Remove instrument panel cluster retainer screws. Gently pull out instrument panel cluster. Remove hazard warning switch and climate control unit retainer screws. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal
Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove right front splash shield. Remove A/C drive belt. Disconnect compressor clutch harness connector. Disconnect high pressure hose and low pressure hoses. Cap openings to prevent moisture from entering system. Cap openings on compressor to prevent oil loss. Remove compressor bolt and compressor.
Installation
- When installing new compressor, drain refrigerant oil from old compressor. Record amount drained. Subtract amount drained, plus 0.4-0.6 of an ounce, from 5.92 ounces (with 2.3L engine) or 5.07 ounces (with 2.5L engine). This is the amount of oil to be removed from new compressor.
- If installing a new refrigerant line, add 0.3 ounce of clean refrigerant oil to high-side refrigerant line before installing. Use new "O" rings lubricated with clean refrigerant oil on all fittings. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Check system for leaks.
- Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Raise front of vehicle. Remove ambient temperature sensor. Remove radiator grille, mud guard, front splash shields and hood stay. Remove radiator brackets and coolant reservoir.
- Place protective cardboard between condenser and radiator. Lean radiator toward engine. Disconnect refrigerant line from condenser, and cap openings. Remove condenser and receiver-drier with refrigerant line connected. Disconnect refrigerant line from receiver-drier, and cap openings. Remove receiver-drier from condenser.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new "O" rings lubricated with clean refrigerant oil. When installing new parts, add refrigerant oil through high-pressure side of compressor. If installing new condenser, add 0.6 ounce of refrigerant oil. If installing new receiver-drier, add 0.3 ounce of refrigerant oil. If installing new refrigerant line or hose, add 0.3 ounce of refrigerant oil.
- Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING. Obtain anti-theft radio code from owner before servicing vehicle. Disconnect negative battery cable.
- Using taped flat-blade screwdriver, carefully pry at rear of center panel to release 2 clips. Pull center panel forward to remove 2 more clips and release locator pins. Remove ashtray and shifter trim ring. Disconnect electrical connectors. Remove 2 screws from hand brake boot. Remove rear console screws. Remove hand brake boot and rear console.
- Remove dashboard undercovers. Remove right side panel. Using long screwdriver, remove glove box screw and glove box. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Tilt down steering shaft. Remove panel light control switch and hole cover. Remove instrument cluster screws.
- Ensure steering wheel is in straight-ahead position. Remove driver-side air bag module. Remove steering wheel lock nut, and remove steering wheel. Disconnect combination switch harness connector. Remove screw and combination switch. Remove passenger-side air bag module.
- Pull instrument cluster bezel forward to disengage clips. Disconnect harness connectors from instrument cluster bezel. Remove security light bulb and socket. Remove instrument cluster bezel. Remove instrument cluster screws, and disconnect remaining harness connectors. Remove instrument cluster.
- Remove steering shaft. Remove hood release knob. Remove left side panel. Remove center panel side covers. Pull dashboard up and forward. Disconnect harness connectors and remove dashboard. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment.
- Remove dashboard undercover and glove box. Remove glove box stay. Remove passenger-side air bag module. Remove compressor manifold-to-evaporator refrigerant line and hose. Remove aspirator hose.
- Disconnect power transistor (MOS FET) harness connector. Disconnect evaporator temperature sensor harness connector and remove evaporator unit. To remove evaporator and expansion valve, disassemble evaporator unit. (Scheme 20) If removing expansion valve, note location of heat sensing tube for installation reference.
To install, reverse removal procedure. When installing new parts, add refrigerant oil through high-pressure side of compressor. If installing new evaporator, add 1.7 ounces of refrigerant oil. If installing new refrigerant line or hose, add 0.3 ounce of refrigerant oil. Evacuate, charge, and leak test A/C system.

- Drain engine coolant. Remove dashboard. See «DASHBOARD»(ref-98829-S28868219682001052600000). Remove evaporator unit. See «EVAPORATOR UNIT»(ref-98829-S21332842832001052600000). Remove heater hose clamps and heater hoses. Disconnect quick couplers. Disconnect air mix actuator harness connector and airflow mode actuator harness connector.
- Disconnect water temperature sensor harness connector. Remove heater unit. To remove heater core, airflow mode actuator and air mix actuator, disassemble heater unit. (Scheme 21) Note locations of airflow mode main link and sub links for installation reference. To install, reverse removal procedure.
