SOLAR VENT MODE

When key reminder switch is off (key removed from cylinder), ambient temperature switch is off, and solar vent switch is in neutral position, the ventilation fans located in trunk compartment operate on electrical power from solar cell. Solar cell is the only power source for ventilation fans. The speed of the fans and the brightness of the indicator light is dependent on the intensity of the sunlight.

When sunlight intensity is very low, ventilation fans will not operate. One fan will operate when sunlight is more intense and solar cell voltage is more than 4.7 volts. Both fans will operate and indicator light on solar ventilation switch will illuminate when sunlight reaches a higher intensity and solar cell voltage rises to 11 volts.

As sunlight intensity falls and solar cell voltage decreases to 4.7 volts, one fan is switched off and indicator light goes out. When sunlight intensity falls to a very low level and solar cell voltage falls below 4.7 volts, both fans will stop.

MANUAL EXHAUST MODE

When ignition is on and top portion of solar ventilation switch is pressed, the ventilation fans located in trunk compartment operate for 10 minutes on battery power to exhaust passenger compartment air. To cancel manual exhaust mode, press either SOLAR of CHARGE on ventilation switch.

BATTERY CHARGE MODE

When ventilation fans are not operating, the electrical power generated by the solar cell is fed to the battery. Supplying the solar cell power offsets the battery self-discharge and inherent dark current draw.

AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SWITCH

Disconnect ambient temperature switch connector. Check for continuity between Brown/Yellow wire terminal and Black wire terminal of ambient temperature switch. With temperature less than 36°F (2°C), continuity should exist. With temperature more than 67°F (19.5°C), continuity should not exist. If continuity is not as specified, replace ambient temperature switch.

SOLAR VENTILATION SWITCH

Remove solar ventilation switch. Check for continuity between specified terminals of solar ventilation switch with switch in specified position. (Scheme 3) If continuity is not as specified, replace solar ventilation switch.

SOLAR VENTILATION CONTROL MODULE (SVCM)

  1. Locate SVCM in left rear of trunk compartment, above ventilation fans. Leave SVCM connecter attached. Using DVOM, measure voltage at specified terminals of SVCM connector (backprobe connector) within specified test conditions. (Scheme 4) If voltage measurements are as specified within specified conditions, go to next step. If voltage measurements are not as specified within specified conditions, check related components and wiring harnesses. If related components amd wiring harnesses are okay, but system is still not functioning properly, replace SVCM.
  2. Disconnect SVCM connector and check continuity at specified terminals between SVCM and SVCM harness connector within specified conditions. (Scheme 5) If continuity is not as specified within specified conditions, check related components and wiring harnesses. If related components amd wiring harnesses are okay, but system is still not functioning properly, replace SVCM.

SOLAR CELL

  1. Open sunroof and remove lower panel cover. Disconnect solar cell connector. Position ten 110 watt fluorescent lights above vehicle roof. Set difference between center of solar battery and fluorescent lights below 19.7" (500 mm). (Scheme 6) Place White reflector board over fluorescent lights. Turn fluorescent lights on.
  2. Using DVOM, measure voltage at Brown/White wire terminal of solar cell connector. If voltage is less than 6 volts, replace solar cell glass panel.

VENTILATION FAN

Disconnect ventilation fan connector. Connect battery positive voltage to Brown wire terminal of ventilation fan No. 1 (White/Blue wire of ventilation fan No. 2) and ground Black wire terminal. Ventilation fan should operate. if ventilation fan does not operate, replace ventilation fan.
