PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Verify customer complaint by operating charging system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses and damaged relays. For fuse and/or relay identification (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found, perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

Using Scan Tool
- Connect the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) or equivalent scan tool to the vehicle DLC-2 16-pin connector located in the driver compartment. (Scheme 3)
- Retrieve/clear the DTCs using the WDS. If any DTC are retrieved, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are present, perform appropriate test under «SYSTEM TESTS»(ref-166663-S25126659632004092400000) or «ON-VEHICLE TESTS»(ref-166663-S05569269542004092400000).

PCM & GENERATOR SHEARING INSPECTION
- Measure the generator terminal "B" voltage when the electrical loads (Headlights, blower motor, rear window defroster, and brake lights) on and then off. If more than 15 volts exists, go to next step. If less than 13 volts exists, go to step 3.
- Monitor the ALTTV (generator output voltage) PID using Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) or equivalent scan tool, or measure the voltage at PCM terminal 2AM using a DVOM. (Scheme 4) If the voltage is 13-15 volts, go to step 4. If voltage is not 13-15 volts, check PCM input error.
- Monitor the ALTTV (generator output voltage) PID using Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) or equivalent scan tool, or measure the voltage of PCM terminal 2AM using a DVOM. (Scheme 4) If voltage is 13-15 volts, go to step 5. If voltage is not 13-15 volts, check PCM input error.
- Using scan tool, monitor the ALTF (generator field coil control duty value) PID, or calculate the duty value of the PCM terminal 2AQ using a oscilloscope. (Scheme 5) If the duty value is 100 percent, check for PCM input error. If duty value is not 100 percent, PCM and/or generator may be faulty.
- Using scan tool, monitor the ALTF (generator field coil control duty value) PID, or calculate the duty value of the PCM terminal 2AQ using a oscilloscope. (Scheme 5) If the duty value is zero percent, check PCM input error. If the duty value in not zero percent, PCM and/or generator may be faulty.
