Principles of Operation
The forward collision warning system is a safety feature that alerts the driver of a high risk collision. In the event of a possible collision, the red LEDs that are integral to the Head Up Display (HUD) module flashes, a chime from the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) activates, and the Audio Control Module (ACM) volume mutes.
The forward collision warning system is activated when the vehicle is moving forward at a speed greater than 8 km/h (5 mph). The Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) determines the distance and relative speed of the vehicle that is in the path of travel, utilizing a radar sensor (integral to the C-CM) to detect other vehicles that are moving in the same direction. If the C-CM determines that a collision is possible, the C-CM sends a network message over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) to the HUD module, and the LEDs internal to the module flash.
The forward collision warning system and audible warning chime can be enabled and disabled through the message center display in the IPC. The system reverts to on each ignition cycle. The HUD module and/or chime activates briefly to confirm the last setting.
The HUD module receives the ignition switch status network message from the Body Control Module (BCM) over the HS-CAN.
For vehicles with a base IPC, the sensitivity of detection is changed in the message center from a high sensitivity (<-->) to a low sensitivity (<->). For vehicles with an optional IPC, there are three levels of sensitivity detection (LONG, NORMAL and SHORT) that are changed in the message center display.
The forward collision warning system works in conjunction with the adaptive cruise control system. If the vehicle is utilizing the adaptive cruise control feature and is at its maximum braking capability, the C-CM sends a forward collision warning display message over the HS-CAN to the HUD module and the LEDs flash. The C-CM sends a message over the HS-CAN of forward collision warning audio level to the IPC, which activates a chime. The C-CM sends a message over the HS-CAN of forward collision audio mute to the IPC. The IPC gateways the message over the Infotainment Controller Area Network (I-CAN) to the ACM and the volume mutes. If a MyKey™ restricted key is in the ignition, the MyKey™ turns on the forward collision warning and will not allow the MyKey™ user to disable the audio or visual forward collision warning system. However, the MyKey™ user is able to adjust the forward collision warning sensitivity.
There are certain situations when the warning LEDs cannot be seen, such as strong sunlight or when wearing sunglasses. The HUD module has a temperature sensor circuit that is integral to the module that senses the temperature of the LEDs internal to the module. When a high passenger compartment temperature such as strong sunlight, is sensed by the temperature sensor, the warning LEDs can be temporarily disengaged. If this occurs, only the audible warning chime is used. Warnings may not appear if the distance to the vehicle ahead is very small or if the steering wheel and pedal movements are large, for example, due to a very active driving style.
When a system fault is detected with the forward collision warning system the message COLLISION WARN NOT AVAILABLE, COLLISION WARN NOT AVAILABLE SENSOR BLOCKED, or COLLISION WARNING MALFUNCTION is displayed in the IPC message center.
Normal Operation
The forward collision warning system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Body Control Module (BCM) sends an ignition state message over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) to the Head Up Display (HUD) module. The LEDs that are internal to the HUD module illuminate for a few seconds to indicate the system is operational.
The radar sensor unit, which is integral to the Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), sends out a radar signal to the vehicle in the path of travel and receives the radar signal back to determine the distance and relative speed of that vehicle. The C-CM sends a message via the HS-CAN to the HUD module if the vehicle in the path of travel enters the preset gap for a collision warning. The HUD module receives a message from the C-CM to flash the LEDs. The C-CM also sends a message to the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) to activate a chime from the IPC and gateways a message over the Infotainment Controller Area Network (I-CAN) to mute the Audio Control Module (ACM) volume. The system can be disabled through the IPC message center.

- DTC U0104:00 (Lost Communication With Cruise Control Module: No Sub Type Information) - sets in the Head Up Display (HUD) module if data messages received from the C-CM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing. - DTC U0140:00 (Lost Communication With Body Control Module: No Sub Type Information) - sets in the Head Up Display (HUD) module if data messages received from the Body Control Module (BCM) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) are missing. - BCM
- HUD module
The Head Up Display (HUD) module is designed with a temperature sensor internal to the module. When the HUD module detects a fault condition in the temperature sensor circuit, such as an open or short to ground, DTCs are set in the HUD module. The system still operates normally when the DTCs are set.
- DTC U210A:16 (Temperature Sensor: Circuit Voltage Below Threshold) - sets in continuous memory in the HUD module when the internal temperature sensor circuit is below the lowest valid temperature value. This is a short to ground on the temperature sensor circuit.
- DTC U210A:17 (Temperature Sensor: Circuit Voltage Above Threshold) - sets in continuous memory in the HUD module when the internal temperature sensor circuit is above the highest valid temperature value. This is an open on the temperature sensor circuit.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- HUD module
- DTC U3003:16 (Battery Voltage: Circuit Voltage Below Threshold) - set by the Head Up Display (HUD) module in continuous memory if the HUD module detects low battery voltage below 7 volts for more than 500 ms.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- High circuit resistance
- HUD module
- DTC U3003:1C (Battery Voltage: Circuit Voltage Out of Range) - sets in continuous memory if the Head Up Display (HUD) module detects high battery voltage above 16 volts for 500 ms.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Charging system concern
- HUD module
The Head Up Display (HUD) module is designed with a temperature sensor internal to the module. Due to extremely hot weather conditions, the temperature sensor circuit allows the HUD module to become disabled under high temperature conditions which could damage the HUD module LEDs. The LEDs remain off until the internal temperature is cool enough to operate and not damage the LEDs. The forward collision warning system still operates, but only emits a chime from the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and mutes the audio system.
The HUD module is designed with a LED prove-out test. Upon each ignition cycle when the ignition switch is in RUN, the LEDs illuminate for a period of time indicating the HUD module is functional.
