- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC). NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition key is in the ON position. The air bag warning indicator prove-out confirms ignition ON (other indicators may NOT prove ignition is ON) confirms ignition ON. If ignition does not turn ON, refer to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-356610) to diagnose no power in RUN. verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-356606) , Inspection and Verification to establish a scan tool session. NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM .
- Carry out the self-test diagnostics for the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module, Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) and Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R). NOTE: The ignition must be OFF to carry out the RFA module self-test.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to DTC Tables. For all other DTCs, refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Table in «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-356607) .
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM TABLE»(ref-356655-S11678859912010022500000) .

The concern may have been caused by an intermittent problem.
Pinpoint Test I: The Left Or Right Exterior Mirror Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™)/Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) LED Appears Dim Or Does Not Illuminate With No DTC Or Message In The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Message Center Present
Refer to the appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article for schematic and connector information.
PINPOINT TEST I: THE LEFT OR RIGHT EXTERIOR MIRROR BLIS™/CTA LED APPEARS DIM OR DOES NOT ILLUMINATE WITH NO DTC OR MESSAGE IN THE IPC MESSAGE CENTER PRESENT
Note. Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
Note. Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .

- I1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER'S CONCERN Carry out the diagnostic system check. Start the engine. Observe the left and right exterior mirror BLIS™ / CTA LEDs and compare the illumination in each mirror. Is one LED noticeably dimmer than the other? Yes : GO to I2 . No : The concern may be due to customer perception or ambient lighting conditions. TEST the system for normal operation.
- I2 VERIFY THE EXTERIOR MIRROR BLIS™/CTA LED OPERATION Ignition OFF. Apply the park brake. Ignition ON. Select REVERSE. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SOD-R and/or SOD-L DataLogger. NOTE: The SOD-R and SOD-L are separate modules and the active command PID needs to be commanded on in each individual module. Select the SOD-R or SOD-L PID (CTALERT) and active command the LED ON. Observe the left and/or right exterior mirror BLIS™ / CTA LED and message center. Does the LED blink brightly and a message in the message center display "CTA ALERT"?
