Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten retaining bolts to specification, starting at the center and working outward. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove intake manifold. See «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-48697-S22317545132001011500000) . Remove accessories and/or brackets attached to cylinder head(s) as necessary. Remove thermactor tube from rear of cylinder heads.
- Remove valve covers. Loosen rocker arm bolts. Rotate rocker arms from push rods. Mark push rods and rocker arm location for reassembly reference. Remove push rods.
- If necessary, remove exhaust manifold for access to cylinder head bolts. See «EXHAUST MANIFOLD»(ref-48697-S03635716052001011500000) . Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket.
- Remove fan shroud-to-radiator bolts. Remove fan clutch, fan and shroud. NOTE: On Cougar and Thunderbird, remove fan clutch using Fan Clutch Holder (T84T-6312-C) and Wrench (T84T-6312-D). Rotate fan clutch nut counterclockwise to remove.
- Remove accessory drive belts. Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft damper retaining bolt.
- Using Puller (T58P-6316-D), remove crankshaft damper. Install Seal Remover (T70P-68070-B) around oil seal. Alternately tighten bolts on seal remover and pull oil seal from front cover.
- Lubricate new oil seal lip with Lubriplate. Place oil seal on Seal Installer (T70P-6B070-A). Place oil seal and seal installer on crankshaft. Push seal installer toward front cover until seal starts in front cover.
- Install installation screw, washer and nut in end of crankshaft. Thread installation screw into the crankshaft. Tighten nut on installation screw until oil seal is pressed into the front cover. Remove seal installer.
- Coat crankshaft damper surface with Lubriplate Apply silicone sealant to crankshaft damper keyway before installing. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48697-S15313312762001011500000) table at end of article.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and drain cooling system. Remove fan shroud attaching bolts and position shroud over cooling fan. Remove fan clutch, fan and shroud. NOTE: On Cougar and Thunderbird, remove fan clutch using Fan Clutch Holder (T84T-6312-C) and Wrench (T84T-6312-D). Rotate fan clutch nut counterclockwise to remove.
- Remove accessory drive belts. Remove necessary accessories and/or brackets attached to water pump. Remove water pump pulley. Remove necessary coolant hoses.
- Drain crankcase. On 5.8L, disconnect fuel pump outlet line from fuel pump. Remove fuel pump and lay pump aside with fuel line attached.
- On all models, remove crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft damper retaining bolt. Using Puller (T58P-6316-D), remove crankshaft damper.
- Remove oil pan-to-front cover bolts. Using a thin blade, cut oil pan gasket even with cylinder block surface before separating front cover from cylinder block.
- Remove front cover bolts. Remove front cover and water pump as an assembly. (Scheme 5)

- Coat oil pan gasket surface with sealer. Cut and position required sections of new gasket. Apply silicone sealant at corners of gaskets.
- Install front cover on cylinder block. Ensure gaskets are in proper position. Install Front Cover Aligner (T61P-6019-B) through oil seal. (Scheme 6)
- Coat front cover bolt threads with Teflon thread sealant and install. While pushing inward on front cover aligner, tighten oil pan-to-front cover bolts to specification. Tighten front cover-to-cylinder block bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48697-S15313312762001011500000) table at end of article.
- Coat crankshaft damper surface with Lubriplate. Apply silicone sealant to crankshaft damper keyway before installing.
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48697-S15313312762001011500000) table at end of article. Fill cooling system with Ford Coolant (E2FZ-19549-AA).
| CAUTION | On Cougar and Thunderbird, air must be bled from cooling system when filling by removing vent plug from elbow on intake manifold behind thermostat housing. DO NOT rotate plastic cap under vent plug or gasket may be damaged. Fill cooling system coolant until coolant flows from vent plug. Install and tighten vent plug to 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m). |
- Rotate crankshaft and position cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Remove front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(ref-48697-S31462889062001011500000).
- Ensure timing marks are aligned. (Scheme 7) Remove camshaft gear retaining bolt and fuel pump eccentric (if equipped). Slide camshaft gear, crankshaft gear and timing chain off as an assembly.
Scheme 7
- Place timing chain around camshaft and crankshaft gear. Align timing marks and slide assembly into position. (Scheme 7)
- Install fuel pump eccentric (if equipped) and camshaft gear retaining bolt. Tighten bolt to specification. See, at end of article, «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48697-S15313312762001011500000) table. Lubricate timing chain and gears with engine oil. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
