Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate valve lifter bores, rocker arms and fulcrums with engine oil. Coat tips of push rods and valve stems with multipurpose grease.
  2. Ensure components are installed in original location. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48697-S15313312762001011500000) table at end of article.
CAUTIONIf any valve train components are replace, check valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT .
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and drain cooling system. Remove radiator, A/C condenser and necessary grille components. Remove valve lifters. See «VALVE LIFTER»(ref-48697-S27994895382001011500000).
  2. Remove timing chain. See «TIMING CHAIN»(ref-48697-S14726594102001011500000). Check camshaft end play. Replace thrust plate if camshaft end play is not within specification. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-48697-S41680696562001011500000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article.
  3. Remove camshaft thrust plate and camshaft. (Scheme 9) If replacing camshaft bearings, remove rear camshaft bore plug. Use Camshaft Bearing Set (T65L-6250-A) to remove camshaft bearings.

Scheme 9
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure oil holes in camshaft bearings and cylinder block are aligned. Front camshaft bearing must be installed .005-.020" (.13-.51 mm) below front face of cylinder block.
  2. Apply sealant to rear camshaft bore plug before installing. Lubricate camshaft journals with heavy engine oil. Apply multipurpose grease to camshaft lobes.
  3. Install thrust plate with groove toward cylinder block. Check camshaft end play. Replace thrust plate if not within specification. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-48697-S41680696562001011500000) table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS at end of article. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill cooling system with Ford Coolant (E2FZ-19549-AA).
CAUTIONOn Cougar and Thunderbird, air must be bled from cooling system when filling by removing vent plug from elbow on intake manifold behind thermostat housing. DO NOT rotate plastic cap under vent plug or gasket may be damaged. Fill cooling system coolant until coolant flows from vent plug. Install and tighten vent plug to 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m).
