DRIVE PINION FLANGE

Note. Remove the rear wheels and the brake calipers to prevent drag during the drive pinion bearing preload adjustment.

Measuring For Backlash (Nodular Iron)

Measure the backlash. Turn the ring gear without turning the pinion gear. Measure the ring gear backlash at four places to obtain a consistent reading.

  1. If the backlash is within specification, go to «Backlash Within Specification (Nodular Iron)»(ref-142042-S09736675832002111100000) .
  2. If a zero backlash condition occurs, go to «Zero Backlash (Nodular Iron)»(ref-142042-S23314539432002111100000) .
  3. If the backlash is not within specification, go to «Backlash Not Within Specification (Nodular Iron)»(ref-142042-S00106544872002111100000) .

Scheme 65

Scheme 65: Backlash Within Specification (Nodular Iron)
  1. Remove the bearing caps and bolts. To establish differential bearing preload, use the Differential Shim Installer (205-220) to increase both left and right shim sizes by the specification shown. see scheme 93 see scheme 88 Use the Differential Shim Installer (205-220) to make sure that the differential bearing shims are fully seated and the assembly turns freely.
  2. Install the bearing caps and bolts and tighten them to specification. see scheme 90 See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-142042-S38260000202002071600000).
  3. Use the dial indicator to recheck the backlash. see scheme 87
  4. Install the differential housing cover. Apply a new continuous bead of sealant to the differential housing cover. see scheme 89 Use Silicone Rubber D6AZ-19562-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specifications ESB-M4G92-A.
  5. Install the rear axle. See «AXLE HOUSING»(ref-142042-S21739472622002071600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Refill the rear axle. Fill the rear axle 3-5 mm (1/8-3/16 inch) from the bottom of the filler hole with SAE 75W-140 High Performance Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A.

Zero Backlash (Nodular Iron)

If a zero backlash condition occurs, add 0.51 mm (0.020 in) to the right side and subtract 0.51 mm (0.020 in) from the left side to allow backlash indication. Check the backlash. see scheme 87 Repeat Measuring For Backlash (Nodular Iron).

PINION FLANGE RUNOUT

CAUTIONPinion bearing preload must be reset if the pinion nut has been loosened or removed for pinion flange reindexing or new component installation.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the driveshaft. See «DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS -- CARS»(ref-97873) article for appropriate procedure.
  3. Check the pinion flange for damage.
  4. Check the runout using the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture (100-002), or equivalent. see scheme 94 Rotate the pinion until the runout is obtained. If the runout is still more than 0.0762 mm (0.003 inch), install a new gearset.
  5. If excessive runout is still evident after installation of a new pinion flange, install a new ring and pinion. Repeat the above checks until the runout is within specifications.
  6. Install the driveshaft. See «DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS -- CARS»(ref-97873) article.
