REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. |
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator sight shield. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment.
- Remove screws and position windshield washer reservoir out of way. Remove screws and remove right fender support brace. Separate refrigerant lines. Plug all openings.
- Remove 2 nuts retaining condenser to radiator. Temporarily suspend radiator from upper radiator support. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove radiator air deflector. Remove 4 bumper cover push-pins. Remove screws and position power steering/transmission cooler out of way.
- Remove bolts from left side of lower radiator support. Remove bolts and remove lower radiator support. Disconnect refrigerant lines from condenser. Plug all openings.
- Lift condenser off radiator support brackets and remove condenser. To install, reverse removal procedure. Add one ounce of new refrigerant oil to condenser during installation. Use new "O" rings coated with clean refrigerant oil. Evacuate, charge, and leak test A/C system.
Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator upper sight shield. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove radiator air deflector. Loosen bolt and remove A/C manifold and tube assembly. Cap openings immediately. Loosen idler pulley and remove compressor drive belt. Disconnect A/C compressor clutch wiring. Support compressor and remove compressor mounting bolts. Remove compressor.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new "O" rings coated with clean refrigerant oil. Measure and replace oil in new compressor. See A/C COMPRESSOR REFRIGERANT OIL CHECKING article in this section. Evacuate, charge and leak test A/C system.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator sight shield. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment.
- Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove lower radiator air deflector. Disconnect refrigerant lines from A/C manifold and tube assembly. Plug all openings.
- Disconnect electrical connector from A/C pressure cutoff switch. Loosen bolt and remove A/C manifold and tube assembly. Remove pressure cutoff switch.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new "O" rings coated with clean refrigerant oil. Check and add oil to compressor as needed. Apply pipe sealant to manifold bolt. Evacuate, charge, and leak test A/C system.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove screws and position power steering reservoir out of way. Disconnect connector from cycling switch. Remove A/C cycling switch. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new "O" ring coated with clean refrigerant oil.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove lower radiator air deflector. Disconnect connector and remove A/C pressure cutoff switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator sight shield. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove radiator air deflector. Remove A/C pressure relief valve from side of manifold and tube assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new "O" ring coated with clean refrigerant oil. Evacuate, charge, and leak test A/C system.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator upper sight shield. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove windshield washer bottle.
- Remove right fender support brace. Remove bolts and reposition power steering reservoir. Remove air suspension air compressor and driver assembly. Remove refrigerant line retainer. Disconnect electrical connector from A/C cycling switch on top of accumulator-drier.
- Disconnect refrigerant line from accumulator-drier. Cap all openings to keep moisture out. Remove retainers and reposition reservoir.
- Remove refrigerant line retainers, remove accumulator-drier bracket screw and lift out accumulator-drier. Disconnect evaporator-to-accumulator tube. Disconnect A/C cycling switch connector on top of accumulator-drier.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new "O" rings coated with clean refrigerant oil. Add proper amount of new refrigerant oil to accumulator-drier prior to installation. See A/C COMPRESSOR REFRIGERANT OIL CHECKING article in this section. Evacuate, charge, and leak test A/C system.
- Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. Remove driver and passenger air bag modules. Disconnect negative battery cable.
- If equipped with floor console, remove console glove box. Disconnect cellular phone connections (if equipped). Remove CD changer, and remove top panel in front of gear selector. Remove screws and carefully lift out floor console. On 5-passenger models, remove rear seat air duct sleeve.
- Remove push-pins, then remove left insulator panel. Remove steering column cover. Remove screws and position hood release handle aside. Remove parking brake release handle and cable. Remove steering column opening reinforcement. Release cable from parking brake actuator. Remove steering column.
- Disconnect left outboard bulkhead connector. If equipped, disconnect heated seat switch connectors. Remove steering column mounting support-to-instrument cowl brace bolts. Remove instrument panel brace-to-instrument panel bolt and position brace aside. (Scheme 6)
- Remove right insulator panel. Disconnect EATC module vacuum harness and in-line electrical connector. Remove and position right scuff plate aside. Remove right cowl trim panel. Disconnect antenna connector.
- Remove brake shift interlock actuator cable. See BRAKE SYSTEM article.
- Carefully pry upward to release defrost grille from instrument panel. Disconnect connectors and remove defrost grille. Remove instrument panel cowl top screws. Remove right instrument panel support-to-cowl side nut. Remove left instrument panel support-to-cowl side bolts.
- Loosen left instrument panel support-to-cowl side captive bolt. Position instrument panel away from cowl and disconnect EATC hose from plenum. Verify that all electrical connectors are disconnected.
- With an assistant, carefully remove instrument panel from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tightening bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-40037-S09772542252001100500000).
Scheme 6
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear seat airflow duct. Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-40037-S32634652202001100500000) .
- Drain coolant from radiator until level is below heater core. Discharge A/C system, using approved recovery/recycling equipment.
- Loosen screw and disconnect connector from PCM, on top of right firewall, under splash shield. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core tubes at firewall. Plug hose and tube openings. Disconnect vacuum supply hose from vacuum check valve.
- Disconnect condenser-to-evaporator refrigerant line and evaporator-to-accumulator refrigerant line. Disconnect 2 evaporator housing electrical connectors. Remove 3 evaporator retaining nuts at cowl panel. Remove bracket screws and remove evaporator housing.
- Remove metal side cover from evaporator housing. Remove electronic blend door actuator. Remove air intake damper spring. Without bending any parts, carefully depress locking ramp and remove damper door shaft from air temperature control door shaft. Carefully remove evaporator housing air outlet door shaft.
- Remove A/C tube dash panel seal and evaporator drain tube. Remove 15 screws and remove evaporator housing cover. Remove evaporator core.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Install 3 ounces of new refrigerant oil to evaporator core. Refill cooling system. Evacuate, charge, and leak test A/C system.
- Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-40037-S32634652202001100500000) . Drain radiator coolant until level is below heater core. Disconnect electrical connector from PCM at right side of firewall, under splash shield. Remove heater hoses. Plug hose and tube openings or use low pressure compressed air to empty heater core. Plug all openings.
- Remove side metal cover from evaporator housing. Remove electronic blend door actuator. Disengage spring from heater core cover and temperature control door lever. Without bending any parts, carefully depress locking ramp and remove damper door shaft from air temperature control door shaft. Carefully remove evaporator housing air outlet door shaft.
- Remove 3 heater cover screws. Remove cover and cover seal. Remove heater core by pressing inward on heater core tubes. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disengage 2 push pins retaining instrument panel insulator to instrument panel. Disconnect courtesy light from insulator. Remove passenger side kick panel. Remove instrument panel upper finish panel. Disconnect sunload sensor connector.
- Remove screws retaining right and center instrument panel to dash panel. Remove right instrument panel-to-cowl retaining nut. Disconnect blower motor wiring connector. Remove 3 mounting plate screws. Pull back on instrument panel and remove blower motor from evaporator housing. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Disengage 2 push pins retaining instrument panel insulator to instrument panel. Detach courtesy light from panel insulator. Detach vacuum harness connector from controller and position it aside. Unplug electrical connector. Remove retaining screws and remove blower motor speed controller. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Remove 3 push-pins and remove right instrument panel insulator. Disconnect courtesy light. If equipped with floor console, remove console glove box. Disconnect cellular phone connections (if equipped). Remove CD changer, and remove top panel in front of gear selector. Remove screws and carefully lift out floor console.
- Remove screws and remove metal cover from side of evaporator housing. Disconnect electronic blend door actuator connector. Remove retaining screws and remove actuator. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Remove evaporator housing. See EVAPORATOR HOUSING & CORE . Disconnect vacuum hose from actuator. Remove 3 screws and remove recirculating air duct. Remove screws retaining vacuum actuator. Carefully rotate vacuum actuator (do not break motor lever while twisting). Remove vacuum actuator. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL . Remove vacuum harness and remove vacuum actuator retaining screws. While carefully rotating vacuum actuator (so lever does not break), remove vacuum actuator. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Remove rear seat airflow duct. Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-40037-S32634652202001100500000) . Drain coolant from radiator so coolant level is below heater core. Discharge A/C system, using approved recovery/recycling equipment. Loosen retaining screw and disconnect connector from PCM, on right side of firewall under splash shield.
- Disconnect heater hoses from heater core and plug openings. Disconnect vacuum supply hose from vacuum check valve. Disconnect refrigerant lines from evaporator tubes. Plug all openings.
- Disconnect evaporator housing electrical connectors. Remove 3 evaporator housing retaining nuts at cowl panel. Remove 2 retaining screws and remove evaporator housing. Remove metal cover.
- Remove retaining screws and remove vacuum harness from heater door vacuum actuator. Carefully rotate vacuum actuator (so lever does not break), and remove vacuum actuator.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new "O" rings at refrigerant line connections, coated with clean refrigerant oil. Refill cooling system. Evacuate, charge, and leak test A/C system.
Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL . Remove vacuum harness and remove vacuum actuator retaining screws. Carefully rotate vacuum actuator (so lever does not break) and remove vacuum actuator. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Remove right fender splash shield. Remove vacuum reservoir retaining screw. Disconnect vacuum hose and remove vacuum reservoir and bracket. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover. Remove left retaining screw from center instrument panel finish panel, disengage the retaining clips and carefully reposition finish panel away from instrument panel.
- Push in on retaining tabs and remove EATC sensor hose and elbow from finish panel. Remove radio retaining screws. Remove EATC module retaining screws and pull module from instrument panel. Detach vacuum and electrical connectors from rear of EATC module. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator upper sight shield. Remove ambient sensor bracket screws, disconnect connector and remove ambient air temperature sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove trim panel on upper right side of instrument panel. Remove 2 sunload sensor mounting nuts. Unplug electrical connector. Remove sunload sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove EATC module. See EATC MODULE R & I . Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover. Disconnect traction control switch (if equipped). Remove center instrument panel finish cover. Unplug connector and hose from sensor. Pull sensor from retainer. To install, reverse removal procedure.
