REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery |
Removal
Remove rack and pinion assembly. See STEERING GEAR . Remove power steering pressure return and pump outlet line connector kit from actuator. Remove 2 bolts retaining actuator to rack and pinion steering gear.
Installation
Ensure 2 seals between steering gear and actuator are in position. Align actuator on steering gear. Install and tighten 2 actuator-to-steering gear bolts to 25-30 ft. lbs. (33-41 N.m.). Install rack and pinion assembly.
- Turn air suspension off. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove radiator upper sight shield. Loosen tensioner and remove drive belt.
- Evacuate air conditioning system using approved recycling/recovery eauipment. Raise and support vehicle. Remove radiator lower air deflector. Remove power steering pressure and return lines, and allow pump to drain. Disconnect hoses from power steering/transmission cooler. Cover line ends to prevent contamination.
- Remove A/C manifold and tube, and A/C compressor. Remove 4 bolts holding pump to engine. If necessary, remove pulley from pump using Pulley Remover (T69L-10300-B). To install, reverse removal procedure.
| CAUTION | There is a check valve located under hollow bolt attaching VAPS pressure block to steering gear. Install valve, dome side up, or system operation will be affected. |
- Install NEW teflon "O" rings on hydraulic line fittings. Position steering gear retaining bolts in steering gear. Insert steering gear through left wheel opening.
- Install hydraulic lines to steering gear. Connect VAPS electrical connector. Position steering gear in subframe. Install tie rod end lock nuts and tie rod ends.
- Install retaining band on heat shield. Attach tie rod ends on steering knuckles. Install and tighten NEW castle nut to align cotter pin slot. Install NEW cotter pins.
- Raise jackstands until subframe contacts body. Install subframe bolts. Install and tighten steering gear-to-subframe retaining nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-63570-S04250922522001021400000) table.
- Install catalytic converter. Attach height sensors. Install wheels. Remove jackstands and lower vehicle. Fill and bleed power steering system.
- Install secondary steering column boot on steering gear from inside passenger compartment. Install primary steering column boot.
- Attach intermediate steering column shaft. Align front end as necessary. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove tie rod end cotter pins and castle nuts. Separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Loosen tie rod end lock nuts.
- Mark tie rod end lock nut position for installation reference. Remove tie rod ends and lock nuts from tie rods.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Install and tighten NEW castle nut to align cotter pin slot. Install NEW cotter pins. Adjust toe-in as necessary. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT. Tighten tie rod end lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
Vehicle dynamics module is located in trunk, below package tray. Turn ignition and air suspension switch off. Remove luggage compartment trim panel. Lower module tray from trim panel. Disconnect electrical connector. Remove module from tray. To install, reverse removal procedure.
