- PRECAUTIONS FOR INSPECTING HYBRID BATTERY SYSTEM Before inspecting the high-voltage system, take safety precautions to prevent electrical shocks, such as wearing insulated gloves and removing the service plug grip. After removing the service plug grip, put it in your pocket to prevent other technicians from reconnecting it while you are working on the high-voltage system. NOTE: Do not put the vehicle into the READY-on state with the service plug grip removed as this may cause a malfunction. After disconnecting the service plug grip, wait for at least 5 minutes before touching any of the high-voltage connectors or terminals. HINT: At least 5 minutes is required to discharge the high-voltage capacitor inside the w/ converter inverter assembly. Wear protective goggles to prevent eye injury from electrolyte leakage when checking inside the HV battery. Wear insulated gloves, turn the ignition switch off, and disconnect the negative terminal of the auxiliary battery before touching any of the orange-colored wires of the high-voltage system. Turn the ignition switch off before performing a resistance check. Turn the ignition switch off before disconnecting or reconnecting any connector. To install the service plug grip, the lever must be flipped down. Without the lever flipped down, the system outputs a DTC pertaining to the interlock switch system.
- PRECAUTIONS FOR HYBRID CONTROL SYSTEM ACTIVATION When the warning light comes on or the auxiliary battery has been disconnected and reconnected, putting the vehicle into the READY-on state may not start the system on the first attempt. If so, turn the ignition switch off and put the vehicle into the READY-on state again.

- BATTERY SMART UNIT CONTROL The battery smart unit converts the HV battery condition signals (voltage, current, and temperature), which are needed to determine the charging or discharging values that are calculated by the THS ECU into digital signals, and transmits them to the THS ECU via serial communication. A leakage detection circuit is provided in the battery smart unit in order to detect any leakage from the HV battery. Furthermore, the battery smart unit detects the voltage of the cooling fan, which is needed by the THS ECU to effect cooling fan control. The battery smart unit also converts these signals into digital signals and transmits them to the THS ECU via serial communication.

- DESCRIPTION The HV control ECU has a self-diagnosis system. If the computer, hybrid battery system or the components are not working properly, the ECU carries out a diagnosis to detect the malfunction, and illuminates the master warning light in the combination meter together with any of the indicators on the multi-information display, the HV system warning, the HV battery warning or the discharge warning. HINT: The master warning light illuminates when THS II fails and it blinks when in inspection mode. When troubleshooting OBD II vehicles, the only difference from the usual troubleshooting procedure is that you need to connect the OBD II scan tool complying with SAE J1978 or the intelligent tester to the vehicle, and read various data output from the vehicle's ECUs. OBD II regulations require that the vehicle's on-board computer illuminates the Malfunction Indicator light (MIL) in the instrument panel when the computer detects a malfunction in: 1) the emission control systems/ components, 2) the powertrain control components (which affect vehicle emissions), or 3) the computers. In addition, the applicable Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) prescribed by SAE J2012 are recorded in the HV control ECU memory (See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-283000-S40789667132008041400000) ). If the malfunction does not recur in 3 consecutive trips, the MIL will go off automatically. However the DTCs remain recorded in the HV control ECU memory. To check the DTCs, connect the intelligent tester to the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) with the CAN vehicle interface module (CAN VIM). The intelligent tester also allows erasing of the DTCs and check the freeze frame data and various forms of THS II data (for operating instructions, refer to their respective instruction manuals). The DTCs include SAE controlled codes and manufacturer controlled codes. SAE controlled codes must be set as prescribed by the SAE, while manufacturer controlled codes can be set by the manufacturer within the prescribed limits (See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-283000-S40789667132008041400000) ).
- CHECK DLC3 The HV control ECU uses the ISO 9141-2 communication protocol. The terminal arrangement of the DLC3 complies with SAE J1962 and matches the ISO 9141-2 format. TERMINAL REFERENCE Symbol Terminal No. Name Reference Terminal Result Condition SIL 7 Bus "+" line 5 - Signal ground Pulse generation Always CG 4 Chassis ground Body ground 1 ohms or less Always SG 5 Signal ground Body ground 1 ohms or less Always BAT 16 Battery positive Body ground 11 to 14 V Ignition switch OFF CANH 6 HIGH-level CAN bus line 14 - LOW-level CAN bus line 54 to 69 ohms Ignition switch OFF CANH 6 HIGH-level CAN bus line 14 - Battery positive 1 Mohms or higher Ignition switch OFF CANH 6 HIGH-level CAN bus line 4 - Chassis ground 1 kohms or higher Ignition switch OFF CANL 14 LOW-level CAN bus line 16 - Battery positive 1 Mohms or higher Ignition switch OFF CANL 14 LOW-level CAN bus line 4 - Chassis ground 1 kohms or higher Ignition switch OFF HINT: If the display shows a communication error message when you have connected the cable of the intelligent tester to the DLC3, turned the ignition switch to the ON position and operated the tester, there is a problem on the vehicle side or tester side. If communication is normal when the tester is connected to another vehicle, inspect the DLC3 on the original vehicle. If communication is still not possible when the tester is connected to another vehicle, the problem is probably in the tester itself, so consult the Service Department listed in its instruction manual.
- INSPECT AUXILIARY BATTERY Measure the voltage of the auxiliary battery. Standard Voltage: 10 to 14 V Inspect the auxiliary battery, fuses, fusible links, wiring harness, connectors and ground.
- CHECK MIL The MIL illuminates when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position and the "READY" light is off. If the MIL is not illuminated, troubleshoot the MIL circuit (See «MIL Circuit»(ref-282995-S28886308592008041400000) ). When the "READY" light turns on, the MIL should turn off. If the MIL remains on, the diagnosis system has detected a malfunction or abnormality in the system.
Scheme 149
- CHECK DTC (HV BATTERY) Connect the intelligent tester or the OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON. Turn the intelligent tester or the OBD II scan tool ON. Using the intelligent tester or the OBD II scan tool, check the DTCs and freeze frame data and then write them down. For the intelligent tester, enter the following menus: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/MOBD / HV ECU / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES. For the OBD II scan tool, see its instruction manual. Confirm the details of the DTCs (See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-283000-S40789667132008041400000) ).
- CHECK FREEZE FRAME DATA If a DTC is present, select that DTC in order to display its freeze frame data. Read freeze frame data recorded when the DTC was set.
- CHECK DTC (SYSTEMS OTHER THAN HV BATTERY) Connect the intelligent tester or the OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON. Turn the intelligent tester or the OBD II scan tool ON. For the intelligent tester, enter the following menus: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/MOBD / CODES (All). For the OBD II scan tool, see its instruction manual. If DTCs output, check the relevant system.
- CLEAR DTC Connect the intelligent tester or the OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON. Turn the intelligent tester or the OBD II scan tool ON. Check that the shift position is in the P position. Clear DTCs and freeze frame data with the intelligent tester or the OBD II scan tool. For the intelligent tester: Enter the following menus: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/ MOBD / HV BATTERY / DTC INFO / CLEAR CODES. Press YES. For the OBD II scan tool, see its instruction manual.
FREEZE FRAME DATA
- FREEZE FRAME DATA HINT: The HV control ECU records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. It is used for estimating or simulating the vehicle conditions when the malfunction occurred. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the intelligent tester on. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / OBD/MOBD / HV ECU / DTC INFO / CURRENT CODES. Read output DTCs. Check the freeze frame data of the detected DTCs. HINT: For the freeze frame data chart (See «INFORMATION / FREEZE FRAME DATA»(ref-282981-S08714477812008041400000) ).
