- AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVEL CONTROL SYSTEM When the headlights are on, the automatic headlight beam level control system operates the headlight level actuator in accordance with the movement of the vehicle. The automatic headlight beam level control system mainly consists of the AFS ECU, front and rear height control sensors, and 2 headlight level actuators. For vehicles with the air suspension system, the AFS ECU calculates changes in the vehicle posture based on the signals from the air suspension ECU and each ECU. Then the AFS ECU controls the headlight level actuator based on this information, in order to change the headlight reflector angle.
- AFS An intelligent AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System) is used in order to ensure a wide low beam lighting area and realize excellent visibility during turns by moving the low beam. The intelligent AFS of this vehicle uses medium-to-high speed control. During medium-to-high speed control, the system calculates the target lighting angle based on the tire angle and vehicle speed, and changes the swivel angle of the low beam headlights independently.
- ILLUMINATED ENTRY SYSTEM The illuminated entry system of this vehicle controls 6 kinds of lights: engine switch illumination, interior foot light illumination, step light, door inside handle illumination light, interior lights (for front and rear) and door mirror foot lights. The main body ECU controls this system.
- INTERIOR LIGHT CONTROL The interior light control (front interior light, engine switch illumination) consists primarily of the fade-in/fade-out function and timer illumination function.
- INTERIOR FOOT LIGHT ILLUMINATION CONTROL AND DOOR INSIDE HANDLE ILLUMINATION LIGHT CONTROL The interior foot light illumination control and door inside handle illumination light control consist primarily of the fade-in/fade-out function and timer illumination function.
- DOOR MIRROR FOOT LIGHT CONTROL The door mirror foot light control consists primarily of the fade-in/fade-out function and timer illumination function.
- BATTERY SAVING CONTROL When the following condition has been met, battery saving control turns off the illuminated lights. With a door open and the engine switch off, approximately 20 minutes elapse.
- AUTOMATIC LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM When the light control switch is in the AUTO position, the automatic light control system detects ambient light levels and controls the headlights and taillights (parking lights, taillights and license plate light). Ambient light levels are detected by the light control sensor that is integrated into the front solar sensor of the air conditioning system. The main body ECU controls this system.
- LIGHT AUTO TURN OFF SYSTEM The light auto turn off system is used to prevent the driver from leaving the vehicle with the exterior lights (headlights, fog lights, taillights and license plate light) on. When the headlights are on, this system turns all exterior lights off approximately 30 seconds after either of the following conditions is met: The engine switch is turned off, the luggage compartment door is closed and an opened door is closed. The engine switch is turned off, all the doors are closed and the luggage compartment door is opened and closed. This system turns all exterior lights off immediately when the lock button on the wireless remote control is pushed with all the doors locked. When the engine switch is turned off and the driver door is opened with exterior lights other than the headlights on, this system turns them off.
- DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT SYSTEM The daytime running light system is designed to automatically illuminate the headlights (high-intensity parking lights), during the daytime to make the car more visible to other vehicles. The main body ECU controls this system. This system is enabled when the conditions below are met: The engine switch is on (IG). An engine speed signal is input (the engine is running). The light control switch is in the off, tail or AUTO position. Parking brake is released.
- AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAM SYSTEM (w/ Automatic High Beam System) General The automatic high beam system enhances the illumination of the area to the front of the vehicle to improve visibility for the driver. It works by detecting light from the front using the camera built into the inner rear view mirror assembly and switching between the high beams and low beams automatically. Function of Main Components Component Outline Inner Rear View Mirror Assembly (automatic high beam sensor) Determines when to switch between the high beams and low beams after identifying the lights of oncoming vehicles, preceding vehicles and other lights from the picture information of its camera sensor. Then, it sends high beam request signals to the AFS ECU via the LIN. AFS ECU Acts as the gateway between the inner rear view mirror assembly (automatic high beam sensor) which uses LIN communication and CAN communication. In addition, it stores Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) if an inner rear view mirror assembly (automatic high beam sensor) malfunction occurs. Steering Sensor Outputs the steering angle information to the AFS ECU. Skid Control ECU Outputs the information about the speed of the front wheel. This information is used by the inner rear view mirror assembly (automatic high beam sensor) to control switching between the high beams and low beams of the automatic high beam system. ECM Outputs a signal to indicate that the shift lever is in R. Based on this signal, the inner rear view mirror assembly (automatic high beam sensor) turns the high beams off. Combination Meter Assembly Displays the automatic high beam indicator light when it receives illuminate or blink request signals from the main body ECU. HINT: The automatic high beam indicator light flashes to inform the driver when there is a malfunction in this system. The automatic high beam indicator light illuminates to inform the driver when the automatic high beam system is activated. The automatic high beam indicator light may turn off when there is bad weather (thick fog, heavy rain, etc.), an abnormal condition with the front windshield (snow, ice, etc.), or an obstruction to the camera field of view (parking tag, etc.). Main Body ECU (Cowl Side Junction Block LH) Receives the light control switch AUTO position and dimmer switch high position signals from the headlight dimmer switch, receives the automatic light control sensor signal to determine the low beam headlight illumination condition, and sends this information to the AFS ECU. This is used to put the automatic high beam system in standby mode. Receives high beam drive request signals from the AFS ECU. Performs illumination control for the automatic high beam system and stores Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) when the system malfunctions. Basic Function When all of the following conditions are met, the automatic high beam system is activated and the automatic high beam indicator light turns on: The engine switch is on (IG). The light control switch is in the AUTO position and the low beam headlights are on. The dimmer switch is in the high position. When all of the following conditions are met, the low beams automatically change to the high beam after a short delay: The vehicle speed is more than approximately 34 km/h (21 mph). The area in front of the vehicle is dark. There are no oncoming vehicles with headlights on. There are no preceding vehicles with taillights on. There are few streetlights along the street ahead. When any of the following conditions are met, the high beams automatically change to the low beams after a short delay: The vehicle speed is less than 27 km/h (17 mph). The level of ambient light is higher than a specified threshold. There are oncoming vehicles with headlights on. There are preceding vehicles with taillights on. There are several streetlights along the street ahead. When any of the following conditions are met, the automatic high beam system will be canceled and the indicator light will turn off. The engine switch is turned off. The light control switch is turned to any position except the AUTO position. The low beam headlights are turned off. The dimmer switch is moved to the low position. HINT: It is possible to manually switch between the high beams and low beams using either of the following operations: Turn the light control switch from the AUTO position to the high position. In this case, the high beams turn on according to the dimmer switch high position. To change to the low beams, move the dimmer switch to the low position. Move the dimmer switch from the high position to the low position. In this case, the low beams turn on according to the dimmer switch position. The automatic high beam system monitors the area in front of the vehicle using the camera built into the inner rear view mirror assembly and makes a judgment to change from the low beams to the high beams when the surrounding area is dark (there are no headlights from oncoming vehicles and no taillights from vehicles in front). High beam control limitations: When the surrounding area is not dark enough, the low beams will not change to the high beams even if the low beam headlights are turned on by the automatic light control system and the automatic high beam indicator light on the combination meter assembly illuminates. (The light level sufficient to turn the auto low beams on is not the same as the light level required to automatically change the low beams to the high beams.) When an oncoming vehicle suddenly appears at a sharp curve or a vehicle crosses the path of the vehicle, the high beams may not change to the low beams. When the fog lights of an oncoming vehicle are detected, the high beams may change to the low beams. The timing of the change between the high beams and low beams may differ depending on the brightness of headlights or fog lights from oncoming vehicles or the taillights of preceding vehicles. The timing of the change between the high beams and low beams may differ between normal conditions (good weather) and when driving on wet, frozen or snowy roads. The timing of the change between the high beams and low beams may differ depending on the number of occupants and amount of cargo present. Be aware that on some occasions, the high beams and low beams may change unexpectedly. The camera built into the inner rear view mirror assembly continually monitors the light level in the area in front of the vehicle. There is a delay in switching the low beams to the high beams. Even when there is no ambient light, the low beams will not change to the high beams immediately. The delay will vary depend on the situation.
- LANE CHANGE FLASHER SYSTEM When moving the turn signal switch to the lane change position (it is not necessary to hold the switch) during a lane change, the turn signal light flashes a specified number of times. While the turn signal light is flashing after the turn signal switch is moved to the lane change position (it is not necessary to hold the switch), the turn signal light turns off if the turn signal switch is moved in the opposite direction. The main body ECU controls this system.
