Removal

  1. Remove front wheel.
  2. Remove bolt and disconnect flexible hose from steering knuckle. Remove bolts, washers and brake caliper. Support brake caliper securely. (Scheme 6)
  3. Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove grease cap from flange. (Scheme 7)
  4. Using a snap ring expander, remove snap ring. Remove nuts and washers. Install nut temporarily to protect threads of stud bolts.
  5. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap on bolt heads and remove nuts and cone washers. (Scheme 8) Remove flange and gasket.
  6. Using a screwdriver, release lock washer. Using special tool 09607-60020, remove lock nut. Remove lock washer. Using special tool 09607-60020, remove adjusting nut. Remove axle hub with disc. (Scheme 9)
  7. Remove claw washer and bearing from axle hub.

Installation

Note. Be careful not to damage ABS speed sensor rotor and oil seal.

  1. Install axle hub to steering knuckle. Install outer bearing and claw washer.
  2. Using special tool 09607-60020, install adjusting nut and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  3. Turn axle hub several times to settle down bearing. Using special tool 09607-60020, retighten adjusting nut. Then loosen it until in can rotate by hand.
  4. Using special tool 09607-60020, retighten adjusting nut to 38-57 INCH lbs. (4.3-6.5 N.m). Check that there is no looseness on bearing.
  5. Using a spring tension gauge, measure preload. Preload at starting should be 9.5-15 lbs. (4.3-6.8 kg). (Scheme 10)
  6. Install NEW lock washer and lock nut. Using special tool 09607-60020, tighten lock nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000). Check that axle hub rotates smoothly and there is no looseness on bearing.
  7. Using spring tension gauge, check preload. Preload at starting should be 9.5-15 lbs. (4.3-6.8 kg). (Scheme 10) Make sure to check preload in direction of rotation. If the preload is not within specification, adjust it again with adjusting nut.
  8. Secure lock nut by bending one lock washer tooth inward and other tooth outward.
  9. Place a NEW gasket in position on axle hub. Install flange to axle hub. Install cone washers, washers and NEW nuts and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  10. Pull drive shaft outside vehicle and select snap ring which ensures clearance between tip of flange and snap ring is less than.008 in. (.20 mm). Snap rings are available from 1.8 mm to 2.8 mm sizes in.2 mm increments.
  11. Using a snap ring expander, install NEW snap ring to drive shaft. Install NEW grease cap to flange.
  12. Install brake caliper with bolts and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  13. Install flexible hose and bolt to steering knuckle and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  14. Install front wheel and tighten lug nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  15. Check ABS speed sensor signal. See appropriate TEST I: SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CHECK under SYSTEM TESTS in ANTI-LOCK/VEHICLE SKID CONTROL - LX 470 article in BRAKES.

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel. Remove engine undercover. Remove torsion bar. See «TORSION BAR»(ref-165186-S25193095672004082300000) . Disconnect stabilizer bar link from lower control arm. Disconnect shock absorber from lower control arm. Remove lower control arm-to-steering knuckle cotter pin and nut. Using appropriate puller, disconnect steering knuckle from lower control arm.
  2. Remove lower control arm bolts and nuts. Remove lower control arm.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000) .
  2. Check wheel alignment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES»(ref-165186-S29781913812004082300000) .

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove lower control arm. See «LOWER CONTROL ARM & BALL JOINT»(ref-165186-S42088010812004082300000) . Using a chisel and hammer, pry up flange of No. 1. bushing.
  2. Using press and Suspension Bushing Tool Set (09710-30021), install appropriate adapters, and press bushing No. 1 from lower control arm. Using appropriate adapters from set, remove bushing No. 2 from frame.
  3. To install, coat rubber area of replacement lower control arm bushings with soapy water. Using press and appropriate bushing removal/installation adapters, install lower control arm bushing into lower control arm. Using Front Mounting Cushion Remover and Replacer (09830-36010) and Seal Ring Tool (09631-32020), install lower control arm bushing No. 2 into frame. Install lower control arm.
  4. Replace dust cover by removing wire and dust cover. Coat ball joint with grease from boot kit. Install a NEW dust cover and wire.
CAUTIONWhen suspension fluid AHC is being drained, vehicle height will lower suddenly.
  1. Connect bleeder hose to bleeder screw of damping force control actuator and loosen bleeder screw. After fluid pressure has dropped and drained out, tighten bleeder screw to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000). Remove bleeder hose.
  2. Remove wheel. Remove fender apron.
  3. Remove bolt and nut and disconnect shock absorber from lower control arm.
  4. Remove bolts and disconnect pressure hose. (Scheme 11) Remove O-ring and back up ring from pressure hose.
  5. While holding cushion, remove nut, cushion, retainer and shock absorber.
  6. Compress and extend shock absorber and check that there is no abnormal resistance or unusual sounds. If there is any abnormality, replace shock absorber with a new one.

Replacement

  1. Using special tool 09623-36010, 09710-28021 (09710-08031) and a press, remove bushing. (Scheme 12)
  2. Using special tool 09623-36010, 09710-28021 (09710-08031) and a press, install NEW bushing. (Scheme 12)

  1. To install reverse removal procedure. Install NEW O-ring and back up ring to pressure hose. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000) .
  2. Fill AHC pump motor reservoir with suspension fluid AHC. Bleed AHC system. See BLEEDING in appropriate ELECTRONIC SUSPENSION article. Check for leaks.

Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove engine undercover. Remove nut, bolt, 2 retainer brackets, 2 cushions, and stabilizer bar link on each end of stabilizer bar. Remove 4 bolts, 2 brackets, 2 cushions, and remove stabilizer bar. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

  1. Remove axle hub. See «AXLE HUB & BEARING»(ref-165186-S36486544212004082300000).
  2. Remove bolts, oil seal, gasket and dust cover. (Scheme 13)
  3. Remove bolts and disconnect ABS speed sensor and wire harness. (Scheme 14)
  4. Remove cotter pin and nut. Using special tool 09628-62011, disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle arm. (Scheme 15)
  5. Remove cotter pin and nut. Using special tool 09628-62011, disconnect lower control arm from steering knuckle arm. (Scheme 16)
  6. Remove cotter pin and nut. Temporarily install nut to lower control arm. Using special tool 09628-62011, disconnect steering knuckle from upper control arm. Remove nut and steering knuckle from lower control arm. (Scheme 17)

Note. Be careful not to damage oil seal.

  1. Apply synthetic oil and lithium soap base chassis grease, NLGI No. 1 to drive shaft. Support lower control arm with jack and connect steering knuckle to lower control arm.
  2. Temporarily install nut to lower control arm. Raise lower control arm with jack and install steering knuckle to upper control arm with nut. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000). Install NEW cotter pin. Torque nut of lower control arm to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  3. Install NEW cotter pin.
  4. Connect tie rod end to steering knuckle with nut and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  5. Install NEW cotter pin.
  6. Connect ABS speed sensor with bolt (A). Connect wire harness with bolts (B and C). (Scheme 18) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  7. Install dust cover, gasket and oil seal with bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000).
  8. Install axle hub. See «AXLE HUB & BEARING»(ref-165186-S36486544212004082300000).

Scheme 19: Removal & Installation
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove engine undercover. Mark torsion bar, torque arm and anchor arm for installation reference. Measure dimension "A" between anchor arm adjusting bolt end and frame. (Scheme 19) Loosen anchor arm bolt until spring tension is free. Measure anchor arm bolt "B." (Scheme 19)
  2. Remove anchor arm adjusting bolt, swivel and adjusting seat. Remove torsion bar spring with anchor arm. Remove anchor arm from torsion bar spring. Remove 2 nuts, bolt and torque arm. see scheme 1
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Align reference marks. There are left and right matchmarks on the rear end of torsion bar springs. Tighten anchor arm adjusting bolts so dimensions "A" and "B" are the same as when removed. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-165186-S16175075032004082300000). Check wheel alignment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES»(ref-165186-S29781913812004082300000).

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel. Remove front fender apron.
  2. Place matchmarks on height control sensor link and upper control arm. Remove nut and disconnect height control sensor link. (Scheme 20)
  3. Disconnect ABS speed sensor. Disconnect steering knuckle from upper control arm by supporting lower control arm with floor jack. Remove upper ball joint cotter pin and nut.
  4. Using a puller, separate upper ball joint from steering knuckle. Mark and remove adjustment cams from upper control arm shaft. (Scheme 21) Remove 2 nuts, 2 camber adjustment cams, and remove upper control arm.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Check wheel alignment. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES .

Remove upper control arm. See UPPER CONTROL ARM . Using a chisel and hammer, pry up bushing flange. Using Upper Control Arm Bushing Remover (09710-03101) and a press, remove bushing.

Using a steel plate and press, install new bushing. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Check wheel alignment. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES .
