SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
- FRONT WIPER SYSTEM The front wiper system receives the wiper operation signal from the windshield wiper switch, and the front light ECU operates the front wiper motor. The front light ECU adjusts the intermittent interval during wiper motor operation according to commands received from the windshield wiper switch. This adjustment is based on vehicle speed, brake signals, etc., and a determination of the vehicle driving and stopping conditions during the intermittent operation. The system has the following functions: FUNCTION CHART Function Outline Vehicle speed sensing intermittent wiper function* This function controls intermittent interval of wipers according to vehicle speed when wiper switch is in INT position Vehicle speed switching function This function automatically switches wipers on or off when vehicle is stopped or starts moving with wiper switch in LO position HINT: *: The vehicle speed sensing intermittent wiper function operates even when the fail-safe function operates due to a malfunction in the auto wiper function.
- FRONT WASHER SYSTEM The front washer system receives the wiper operation signal from the windshield wiper switch, and the front light ECU operates the front washer motor.
- CONTINUOUS FRONT WASHER WIPER SYSTEM The continuous front washer system receives the washer operation signal from the windshield wiper switch, and the front light ECU operates the wiper motor. The front wipers are operated 3 times after the front washer is stopped. The front wiper stops after operating 3 times from the point where the front washer switch has been ON for more than 40 seconds continuously. The front wipers are then operated once at an interval of 3 to 7 seconds. The interval is determined by the vehicle speed signal received from the combination meter.
- AUTOMATIC WIPER SYSTEM In the automatic wiper system, the rain sensor mounted in the upper portion of the windshield sends a front wiper operation command, based on the amount of rainfall, to the front light ECU. The front wipers operate when the windshield wiper switch is in the AUTO position. The rain sensor sensitivity can be adjusted with the rain sensor adjusting switch. In this system, the front light ECU receives the vehicle speed signal from the combination meter, and operates the front wipers according to the vehicle speed. The front light ECU adjusts the intermittent interval during wiper motor operation according to commands received from the rain sensor. This adjustment is based on vehicle speed, brake signals, etc., and a determination of the vehicle driving and stopping conditions during the intermittent operation.
- HEADLIGHT CLEANER SYSTEM The headlight cleaner system operates when the headlights are ON and the light control rheostat is pushed ON. It also operates when the headlights are ON and the front wiper washer system is operating. However, it does not operate when the daytime running light system is operating.

- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER OR TECHSTREAM (FRONT WIPER MOTOR) Select the ACTIVE TEST, use the Techstream to generate a control command, and then check the front wiper motor. NOTE: When a BODY N0.5 (front light ECU) related vehicle switch is ON, ACTIVE TEST items related to the vehicle switch are prohibited (double operation prohibition). - INSPECT FRONT WIPER MOTOR Remove the front wiper motor. Check the LO operation. Connect the positive (+) battery lead to terminal 1 (+1) of the connector and the negative (-) battery lead to terminal 5 (E), and check that the motor operates at low speed. OK: Motor operates at low speed Check the HI operation. Connect the positive (+) battery lead to terminal 4 (+2) of the connector and the negative (-) battery lead to terminal 5 (E), and check that the motor operates at high speed. The front light ECU receives the HI position signal of the wiper switch to operate the wiper motor at HI speed. Even if the ECU malfunctions, its circuit structure enables it to operate the wiper in HI operation mode.

The auto wiper system adjusts the wiper speed to the optimum speed based on the amount of rain. The rain sensor mounted on the windshield detects rainfall. This system operates when the windshield wiper switch is set to AUTO. The rain sensor sensitivity can be adjusted with the rain sensor adjusting switch. Signals are sent to the front light ECU from the windshield wiper switch through the CAN line, and from the rain sensor through the LIN line. Based on these signals, the front light ECU operates the wiper and determines its operation speed.

The front light ECU receives washer fluid level warning switch information, and sends it through CAN line to the combination meter. The combination meter receives this information, and turns on the washer fluid level warning switch when the washer fluid becomes low.

- REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER RH Remove the 6 clips and cowl top ventilator louver RH.
- DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation. NOTE: After the engine switch is turned off, the HDD navigation system requires approximately 6 minutes to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, wait 6 minutes or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

- REMOVE HOOD TO COWL TOP SEAL Using a clip remover, disengage the 11 clips.
- REMOVE FRONT FENDER TO COWL SIDE SEAL LH Pull the cowl side seal in the direction indicated by the arrow in the illustration to detach the 2 claws and remove the cowl side seal.
- REMOVE FRONT FENDER TO COWL SIDE SEAL RH HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.
- REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER PROTECTOR LH Remove the clip and cowl top ventilator louver protector LH.
- REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the 2 clips. Disengage the 9 claws. Remove the cowl top ventilator louver.
- REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER LINK ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connector. Then detach the 2 clamps and remove the wire harness from the cowl top panel. Remove the 4 bolts and wiper motor and link. HINT: The 3 bolts labeled (A) in the illustration cannot be removed from the wiper motor and link because they are integrated into the wiper motor and link.
- REMOVE WIPER MOTOR COVER Remove the wiper motor cover. HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
- REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR ASSEMBLY Using a screwdriver, disconnect the rod of the wiper link from the wiper motor as shown in the illustration. HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use. Place matchmarks on the wiper motor and crank arm. Remove the nut and crank arm. Remove the 3 bolts and wiper motor.

- INSPECT WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR ASSEMBLY Check the LO operation. Connect the positive (+) battery lead to terminal 5 (+1) of the connector and the negative (-) battery lead to terminal 4 (E), and check that the motor operates at low speed (LO). OK: Motor operates at low speed (LO). If the result is not as specified, replace the motor. Check the HI operation. Connect the positive (+) battery lead to terminal 3 (+2) of the connector and the negative (-) battery lead to terminal 4 (E), and check that the motor operates at high speed (HI). OK: Motor operates at high speed (HI). If the result is not as specified, replace the motor. Check the automatic stop operation. Connect the positive (+) battery lead to terminal 5 (+1) of the connector and the negative (-) battery lead to terminal 4 (E). With the motor operating at low speed (LO), disconnect terminal 5 (+1) to stop the wiper motor operation at any position other than the automatic stop position. Using SST, connect terminals 1 (S) and 5 (+1). Then connect the positive (+) battery lead to terminal 2 (B) of the connector to restart the motor operation at low speed (LO). SST 09843-18040 Check that the motor stops automatically at the automatic stop position. OK: Automatically stops. If the result is not as specified, replace the motor.

- INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR ASSEMBLY Install the wiper motor with the 3 bolts. Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf) Align the nut with the matchmarks and install the crank arm. Torque: 17.2 N*m (175 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf) Install the rod of the wiper link to the crank arm.
- INSTALL WIPER MOTOR COVER Install the wiper motor cover.
- INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER LINK ASSEMBLY Install the wiper motor and link assembly with the 4 bolts. Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf) Connect the connector. Then attach the 2 clamps to install the wire harness to the cowl top panel.
- INSTALL COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER SUB-ASSEMBLY Push the ventilator louver in the direction indicated by the arrow in the illustration to attach the 9 claws and 2 clips and install the ventilator louver.
- INSTALL COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER PROTECTOR LH Attach the clip and cowl top ventilator louver protector LH.
- INSTALL FRONT FENDER TO COWL SIDE SEAL LH Push the cowl side seal in the direction indicated by the arrow in the illustration to attach the 2 claws and install the cowl side seal.
- INSTALL FRONT FENDER TO COWL SIDE SEAL RH HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.
- INSTALL HOOD TO COWL TOP SEAL Attach the 11 clips and install the cowl top seal.
- INSTALL FRONT FENDER PROTECTOR UPPER LH Attach the clips to install the fender protector upper.
- INSTALL FRONT FENDER PROTECTOR UPPER RH HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.

- INSTALL FRONT WIPER ARM LH Stop the wiper motor at the automatic stop position. Clean the wiper arm serration with a round file or equivalent. Clean the wiper pivot serration with a wire brush. Install the wiper arm and blade with the nut. Make sure that the wiper arm and blade comes to the position shown in the illustration. Standard measurement STANDARD MEASUREMENT Position Specified Condition A 16.3 mm (0.64 in.) B 61.7 to 76.7 mm (2.43 to 3.02 in.) Torque: 22.0 N*m (224 kgf*cm, 16 ft.*lbf) HINT: Hold down the wiper arm hinge with your hand while tightening the nut.
- INSTALL FRONT WIPER ARM RH Stop the wiper motor at the automatic stop position. Clean the wiper arm serration with a round file or equivalent. Clean the wiper pivot serration with a wire brush. Install the wiper arm and blade with the nut. Make sure that the wiper arm and blade comes to the position shown in the illustration. Standard measurement STANDARD MEASUREMENT Position Specified Condition A 23.2 mm (0.91 in.) B 35.6 to 50.6 mm (1.40 to 1.99 in.) Torque: 22.0 N*m (224 kgf*cm, 16 ft.*lbf) HINT: Hold down the wiper arm hinge with your hand while tightening the nut. Operate the front wipers while spraying washer fluid on the windshield glass. Make sure that the front wipers function properly and there is no interference with the vehicle body.
- CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
- INSTALL COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER RH Install the 6 clips and cowl top ventilator louver RH. NOTE: Be sure to install the cowl top ventilator louver RH properly. If it is not installed properly, water may enter the engine room and cause malfunctions.
- PERFORM INITIALIZATION Perform initialization (see «INITIALIZATION» ). NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
